Qiaopi is one of several names given to the “silver letters” Chinese emigrants sent home in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. These letters-cum-remittances document the changing history of the Chinese diaspora in different parts of the world and in different times. Dear China is the first book-length study in English of qiaopi and of the origins, structure, and operations of the qiaopi trade. Notably, the tombs were not commissioned for the scholars and officials who dominate the historical record of China but affluent farmers, merchants, clerics—people whose lives and deaths largely went unrecorded. Why did these elites furnish their burial chambers with vivid representations of actors and theatrical performances? Why did they pursue such distinctive tomb-making? In Theater of the Dead, Jeehee Hong maintains that the production and placement of these tomb images shed light on complex intersections of the visual, mortuary, and everyday worlds of China at the dawn of the second millennium. Assembling recent archaeological evidence and previously overlooked historical sources, Hong explores new elements in the cultural and religious lives of middle-period Chinese. Rather than treat theatrical tomb images as visual documents of early theater, she calls attention to two largely ignored and interlinked aspects: their complex visual forms and their symbolic roles in the mortuary context in which they were created and used. 2020 marked a remarkably unusual year for all, tough and impressive enough. Along with the prevalence of COVID-19 and the deepening of economic globalization, work and production in China were resumed in an orderly manner, bringing positive economic growth against the trend. In this context, commercial dispute resolutions in China were faced with new challenges and endured new reforms while embracing new developments. The promulgation of new laws and regulations in 2020, including the Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China and the Supplementary Arrangements on Mutual Implementation of Arbitral Awards in Mainland China and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, has elevated the arbitration system to a higher level. Arbitration institutions such as the Beijing Arbitration Commission/Beijing International Arbitration Center (hereinafter referred to as “BAC/BIAC”) carried out anti-pandemic measures in a timely manner to ensure the well-functioning of the arbitration procedures. Meanwhile, China’s judicial supervision on arbitration and arbitration disclosure have undergone impressive developments. In 2020, the procedural standards of commercial mediation were further optimized, and commercial mediation institutions continued to expand and grow, while the number of mediation cases increased steadily.
