Chicanismo, the idea of what it means to be Chicano, was born in the 1970s, when grassroots activists, academics, and artists joined forces in the civil rights movimiento that spread new ideas about Mexican American history and identity. The community murals those artists painted in the barrios of East Los Angeles were a powerful part of that cultural vitality, and these artworks have been an important feature of LA culture ever since. This book offers detailed analyses of individual East LA murals, sets them in social context, and explains how they were produced. The authors, leading experts on mural art, use a distinctive methodology, analyzing the art from aesthetic, political, and cultural perspectives to show how murals and graffiti reflected and influenced the Chicano civil rights movement. Recent global events, including the ‘Arab Spring’ uprisings, Occupy movements and anti-austerity protests across Europe have renewed scholarly and public interest in collective action, protest strategies and activist subcultures. We know that social movements do not just contest and politicise culture, they create it too. However, scholars working within international politics and social movement studies have been relatively inattentive to the manifold political mediations of graffiti, muralism, street performance and other street art forms. Against this backdrop, this book explores the evolving political role of street art in Latin America during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. It examines the use, appropriation and reconfiguration of public spaces and political opportunities through street art forms, drawing on empirical work undertaken in Brazil, Bolivia and Argentina. Bringing together a range of insights from social movement studies, aesthetics and anthropology, the book highlights some of the difficulties in theorising and understanding the complex interplay between art and political practice. It seeks to explore 'what art can do' in protest, and in so doing, aims to provide a useful point of reference for students and scholars interested in political communication, culture and resistance. Out of that gathering eventually blossomed the church now known as Calvary Presbyterian Church, South Pasadena, California. The little congregation struggled to survive for 10 years - 1887 to 1897 but simply couldnt support the church financially, and finally had to disband. Five years later, however, life was breathed back into the church, and this time it took. Nearly 110 years have past since that little congregation was re-organized, and the church it became is still strong. This first volume of the churchs history aims to capture the lost or hidden years, and to describe the life of the church up to 1925, the year the congregation moved into the beautiful three-story gothic building it now occupies. This is the story of Calvarys earliest pastors and the people who enriched the church, all in the context of the dawning community of South Pasadena, California.

The immense state of Queensland nearly takes up Australia's entire northeastern quadrant, stretching from halfway up the rough-chiseled east coast all the way to the middle of the Gulf of Carpentaria. With a landmass of 1,727,200 sq km, it's the second-largest state after Western Australia, and it encompasses every environment imaginable. To the east, golden beaches and touristy surf towns are cloaked in thick swathes of rainforest, and fronted by palm-fringed islands in clear, azure bays. The verdant greenery runs right over the rugged Great Dividing Range, ending in high, windswept central plains and stark-red, dusty western deserts. This is Australia's holiday state, with a Florida-style beach culture and more than 300 sunny days every year. There's a ton to do for anyone and everyone, from just lazing on the sand to finding physical challenges galore. Hiking, watching wildlife, skydiving, and spelunking provide just a few tastes off the menu of grand land adventures, which are linked by scenic train and cable-car journeys, meandering back-road drives, and sprawling desert explorations. On the water, there are endless choices for sailing and kayaking, surfing, snorkeling, and diving along the coast and through the Great Barrier Reef. It's the most popular vacation spot in the country because everything's here: nature, culture, history, and adventure, all conveniently set upon a framework of modern towns and wrapped up in some of the world's wildest environments. Brisbane, the state capital, sits 15 mi/25 km inland from the Pacific along the banks of the serpentine Brisbane River. It's a perfectly modern city today, with glittering high-rise buildings and an abundance of green park areas, a surrounding of hilly suburbs, and a wealth of adventure opportunities. To the south, the Gold Coast continues in a line of hotels, restaurants, bars, and beaches; to the north, the Sunshine Coast is equally touristy, but more refined. Keep going, and you'll hit the gemfields, full of gold, rubies, sapphires, and other goodies. Past here, you're into the red Outback deserts. The Land: Queensland may be massive, but its very different environments can be neatly divided into a half-dozen unique sectors which together hold some 31/2-million citizens. Although the state is so big it's been broken into three separate regions for this book, a general rundown of the varying outdoor scenes is covered here. You'll find a more detailed look at the land, flora, and fauna of the central and northern areas in the two following chapters.
