Hilda and her sisters lived with a series of foster families in the relative safety of Wales, some kind, some punitive. The result is a testament to the courage and ingenuity of young people who meet with the kindness of strangers and child abuse. One of the best books ever written about wartime Britain from a child's perspective. It can be read alongside The Diary of Anne Frank.
