In the 1950s the direct observation of dislocations became possible, stimulat ing the interest of many research workers in the dynamics of dislocations. This led to major contributions to the understanding of the plasticity of various crys talline materials. During this time the study of metals and alloys of fcc and hcp structures developed remarkably. In particular, the discovery of the so-called in ertial effect caused by the electron and phonon frictional forces greatly influenced the quantitative understanding of the strength of these metallic materials. Statis tical studies of dislocations moving through random arrays of point obstacles played an important role in the above advances. These topics are described in Chaps. 2-4. Metals and alloys with bcc structure have large Peierls forces compared to those with fcc structure. The reasons for the delay in studying substances with bcc structure were mostly difficulties connected with the purification techniques and with microscopic studies of the dislocation core. In the 1970s, these difficulties were largely overcome by developments in experimental techniques and computer physics. Studies of dislocations in ionic and covalent bonding materials with large Peierls forces provided infonnation about the core structures of dislocations and their electronic interactions with charged particles. These are the main subjects in Chaps. 5-7.

III–V compound semiconductors such as GaAs and InAs alloyed with Mn exhibit ferromagnetism. The magnetic, electrical, and optical properties of ferromagnetic III–V semiconductors are first compiled along with the way to prepare the epitaxial films and the effect of postgrowth annealing. Theories available to explain the magnetism in these alloys are then presented. Because the ferromagnetic semiconductors are compatible with epitaxial III–V heterostructures, a number of device structures have been examined and shown to reveal a wide variety of phenomena that either cannot be realized or are very difficult to observe in ferromagnetic metal structures. The unique properties revealed by ferromagnetic semiconductor structures, ranging from reversible electric field control of ferromagnetic phase transition to generating velocity versus current-density curves of current-induced domain wall motion, are then reviewed. The prospect of realizing high-transition temperature is discussed in the last section.

A history of Japan-United States relations from the point of view of a pro-American Japanese scholar, this work is designed to serve as an analysis of the current situation--the third opening of Japan to the West in the last century. The two earlier openings failed when Japan adopted the policy of sonno-joi (which means literally revere the emperor and expel the foreigners). This book is written to try to forestall the very real possibility of a recurrence of sonno-joi: as a reaction to the current opening by appealing to both the Japanese and the Americans to understand Japanese history and Japanese sensibilities. Japan and the United States share many interests and goals, but they suffer from a tremendous gap in mutual perceptions. Ibe makes an attempt here to explain the Japanese and their view of the world to a non-Japanese audience. He believes Japan is not an inexplicable riddle nor a monolith Japan, Inc. He argues that since time immemorial, forging unity among the many warring groups in Japan has been difficult, whether uniting the warlord clans of the ancient period, the feudalistic domains of premodern times, the political factions of the modernizing period, or the private corporations or government ministries of today.
