Das vorliegende Buch ist das Ergebnis einer mehrjahrigen wissenschaftli chen Auseinandersetzung mit der lnselwelt des Siidpazifiks. Die zugrunde liegenden F orschungen fanden in den Jahren 1992 bis 1995 in Fidschi und den umgebenden lnselstaaten statt und miindeten in einer Dissertation mit dem Titel "taukei und vulagi -Ursachen politi scher lnstabilitat in Fidschi; Kulturwandel, ethnische Kontlikte und die Bedeutung des Hauptlingswesens: die fidschianische Perspektive". Zusatzliches Material wurde 1996 und 1997 vor Ort erhoben und findet hier seine Beriicksichtigung. Die jiingsten Ent wicklungen in Zusammenhang mit der lmplementierung einer neuen Ver fassung fUr Fidschi und die Wiederaufnahme Fidschis in den British Commonwealth of Nations werden angesprochen und bilden den SchluB punkt dieser Arbeit, deren Schwerpunkt einer umfassenden Darstellung hi storischer Ereignisse und Entwicklungen und daraus resultierender Konse quenzen fUr die rezente Situation Fidschis gewidmet ist. Ausgangspunkt fUr die intensive Beschaftigung mit der Region war mein Interesse fUr politische und gesellschaftliche Entwicklungen in ehemals ko lonisierten Staaten vor dem jeweiligen soziokulturellen und soziookonomi schen Hintergrund, unter Beriicksichtigung der Konsequenzen kolonialer EintluBnahme und der einzelnen Phasen der Dekolonisation. Style-Architecture and Building-Art is Hermann Muthesius’s classic criticism of nineteenth century architecture. Now published for the first time in English, this pivotal text represents the first serious effort by Muthesius to define the elements of early modernist architecture according to notions of realism and simplicity. Although Muthesius is known best in Anglo-American architectural literature for his studies of the English house, his scholarship constituted a wide-ranging modernist polemic emanating from the German realist movement of the late 1890s. Notions that were introduced in Style-Architecture and Building-Art became common in later modernist historiography: disdain for the nineteenth century’s artistic eclecticism and lack of originality; appreciation of the material and industrial aspects of building technology, and, above all, a simpler approach to design. Muthesius' critique of stylistic architecture is not only linked to the development of the Deutsche Werkbund movement, but also can be viewed more broadly as a cornerstone of the modern movement. In his introduction, Standford Anderson situates Muthesius and his work in turn-of-the-century architectural discourse and analyzes his vision of a new form of architecture. Anderson also discusses the rationale underlying the call for cultural renewal, the role of English architectural models in Muthesius’s thought, critical differences between the first and second editions of Style-Architecture and Building-Art, the influence of the Jugendstil and Art Nouveau movements on Muthesius and, in turn, the influence of Muthesius on the Deutsche Werkbund movement.
Over 200 previously unpublished photographs document the building and development of the many check points, barbed wire barriers, and alarmed fences which formed the concrete wall around Berlin. This book tells dramatic tales of spectacular escapes and terrible deaths, and explains the history making events surrounding the building and fall of the Wall. Contemporary photographs are contrasted with photographs from the eighties to offer surprising insights into how the former death strip has changed since 1990. Relics of the wall in the current cityscape are prominently illustrated, including remnants of the Wall itself, expanded metal lattice fences, observation towers, barbed wire and concrete posts. Also included are statistics showing the numbers of refugees and victims of the Wall, a guide to the museums and memorials and a summary of the literature and cinema treatment of the Wall, along with a brief chronicle of its history.
Hermann Broch (1886-1951) is remembered among English-speaking readers for his novels The Sleepwalkers and The Death of Virgil, and among German-speaking readers for his novels as well as his works on moral and political philosophy, his aesthetic theory, and his varied criticism. This study reveals Broch as a major historian as well, one who believes that true historical understanding requires the faculties of both poet and philosopher. Through an analysis of the changing thought and career of the Austrian poet, librettist, and essaist Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929), Broch attempts to define and analyze the major intellectual issues of the European fin de siècle, a period that he characterizes according to the Nietzschean concepts of the breakdown of rationality and the loss of a central value system. The result is a major examination of European thought as well as a comparative study of political systems and artistic styles.
