As Herbert Kohl approached seventy, he realized the image he had of himself (energetic man in midlife) was not in keeping with how he was viewed by others (wise grandfather figure). To counter the realization that he was growing old, Kohl, a staunch believer in lifelong learning, set out to try something new. While on a walk, he happened upon a painting studio and on a lark signed up for a beginning class. When Kohl arrived for his first lesson, he was surprised to see the students were Chinese children between the ages of four and seven. Now, after three years of study, Kohl tells us what he learned from them. He shares the joys of trying to stay as fresh and unafraid as his young classmates and the wisdom he unexpectedly discovers in the formal tenets of Chinese landscape painting. Germany in the 20th century endured two world wars, a failed democracy, Hitler's dictatorship, the Holocaust, and a country divided for 40 years after World War II. But it has also boasted a strong welfare state, affluence, liberalization and globalization, a successful democracy, and the longest period of peace in European history. A History of Twentieth-Century Germany provides a survey of German history during a century of extremes. Ulrich Herbert sees German history in the 20th century as determined by two contradictory perspectives. On one hand, there are the world wars and great catastrophes that divide the country's history into two parts-before and after 1945. Germany is the birthplace of radical ideologies of the left and right and the only country in which each ideology became the foundation of government. This pattern left its stamp on both the first and second halves of the century. On the other hand, the rise of modern industrial society led to decades of conflict over the social and political order regardless of which political system was in force. This book portrays aspects of the life of a community of over 1,200 Jews who were either born in Yemen, or who were, in 1975–77, the young sons and daughters of immigrants from Yemen. It contains implications for the important and currently debated topic of ethnic integration in Israel.
Enteric infection has played an important role in the majority of the world's populations, including children (particularly those under four years of age), the aged, the malnourished, military populations, and per sons from industrialized regions traveling to developing areas. The magni tude of the problem has been profound in areas of the world with reduced economic development, where there exists a greater reservoir of entero pathogens and a larger susceptible population with nutritional deficits. Morbidity from enteric infection in developing areas exceeds that seen in industrialized countries by severalfold, with the problem being most seri ous in infants who are bottle-fed and other infants and young children soon after being weaned from the breast ("weanling diarrhea"). Of greater significance than the inverse relationship of diarrhea morbidity with levels of industrial development is the relationship of death from intestinal infection and socioeconomic advancement. Mortality rate from diarrhea is 10 to 100 times greater in developing areas. In many parts of the third world, diarrhea, resultant dehydration, and associated malnutri tion are the leading causes of death in infants and young children and account for as great as one-third of pediatric deaths.
