Galax, a small Virginia town at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, was one of the first places that Henry H. Brownstein, Timothy M. Mulcahy, and Johannes Huessy visited for their study of the social dynamics of methamphetamine markets—and what they found changed everything. They had begun by thinking of methamphetamine markets as primarily small-scale mom-and-pop businesses operated by individual cooks who served local users—generally stymied by ever more strenuous laws. But what they found was a thriving and complex transnational industry. And this reality was repeated in towns and cities across America, where the methamphetamine market was creating jobs and serving as a focus for daily lives and social experience. The Methamphetamine Industry in America describes the reality that the methamphetamine industry is a social phenomenon connecting local, national, and international communities and markets. The book details the results of a groundbreaking three-stage study, part of a joint initiative of the National Institute on Drug Abuse and the National Institute of Justice, in which police agencies across the United States were surveyed and their responses used to identify likely areas of study. The authors then visited these areas to observe and interview local participants, from users and dealers to law enforcement officers and clinical treatment workers. Through the eyes and words of these participants, the book tells the story of the evolution of methamphetamine markets in the United States over the past several years, given changes in public policies and practices and changing public opinion about methamphetamine. The authors look closely at how the markets are part of a larger industry, how they are socially organized, and how they operate. They also consider the relationships among the people involved and those around them, and the national, regional, and local culture of the markets. Their work demonstrates the importance of understanding the business of methamphetamine—and by extension other drugs in society—through a lens that focuses on social behavior, social relationships, and the cultural elements that shape the organization and operation of this illicit but effective industry.

They challenge the commonly embraced notion that Trumpism is primarily a function of economic insecurity within his support base, documenting how support for the former president primarily centered on reactionary socio-cultural values and white supremacy. They also show how white supremacist values are central to the Trump base defending the January 6th insurrection, despite academics, journalists, and political officials in both major parties ignoring the threat of rising white nationalism.

The structure of the brain stem is discussed in terms of functional systems; wherever possible, the cell masses are treated in the framework of their interconnecting fiber paths as demonstrated by tract-tracing techniques and in relation to experimental data on other reptiles. Furthermore, some comments on the similarities and differences between the reptilian and the mammalian brain stems are presented. Research in "lower" vertebrates, including reptiles, has added much to our knowledge on basic features in the organization of the neuronal circuitry common to vertebrates.

This multi-authored book provides a unique accounting of the cancer problem from the standpoint of those primary genetic factors which may be interacting with myriad environmental exposures in cancer etiology. It provides a comprehensive coverage of cancer of all anatomical sites in conjunction with a genetic/environmental thrust. It includes a survey chapter dealing with the role of primary genetic factors in cancer of differing anatomic sites and a similar comprehensive survey chapter tracing the history of epidemiology, with focus upon multiple anatomic sites, including classical epidemiologic cancer models such as cigarette smoking, asbestos, vinyl chloride, and uranium exposure. Chapters are devoted to tumor biomarkers and their applicability to cancer of multiple anatomic sites. Clinical correlation will involve surveillance/management programsand focus on high-risk groups-such as those involving primary genetic or environmental factors and/or their interaction. The development of registries involving families with differing hereditary cancer syndromes are considered. Also, many chapters are devoted to environmental protective measures, as well as the need for more responsibility for coverage of patients at inordinately high risk for cancer by third party carriers. Other chapters address segregation and linkage analysis, oncogenes, cytogenetics, and other biomarkers. This book will be of interest to general clinicians, oncologists, surgeons, geneticists, and carcinogenesis investigators.
