Why is the French International Relations (IR) discipline different from the transnational-American discipline? By analysing argument structures in research articles across time, this book shows how the discipline in France is caught between the American character of the discipline and the French state as regulator of legitimate forms of expression. Concretely, French research arguments are less explicit about what their propositions are and what academic discussions they draw on and add to than their transnational-American counterparts. Based on a comparative case study of French and American IR research from 1950 to 2011, the book is a major contribution to the meta-IR literature on global, regional and national traditions of IR. The challenge to the French discipline of whether and how to position itself in relation to the evolving American discipline is in many ways exemplary for other non-American national IR disciplines, and the choices as well as the structural conditions underlying the French case are relevant to all non-Western disciplines. The comparative analysis moreover reveals that the modern American discipline -- what is considered as recognisable social science -- takes shape only during the 1970s. The book thus offers new knowledge about the discipline's international development as such. Both case and methodology are interesting to larger audiences outside IR, in the history and sociology of social science, contrastive rhetoric, as well as French and cultural studies.

Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - General and Theories, London School of Economics (Department of International Relations), language: English, abstract: Proponents of a 'neo(realist)-neo(liberal) consensus' within the academic field of International Relations (IR) hold that, despite the occurrence of numerous intra- and interdisciplinary challenges over the past decades, the core assumptions of realism still constitute a dominant paradigm in the study of world politics. This essay argues that such an overall judgement might be appropriate if it is meant to reflect the long-term adaptability of realist thought - although some qualifications have to be made as to what rival theory has achieved what degree of relative success in questioning realism's intellectual hegemony. First, it is striking to note how many elements of the rationalist/positivist epistemology embodied by neorealism have found their way into neoliberal as well as constructivist theories of international politics. The adequacy of realism's classical formula - international relations is about states pursuing interests defined in terms of power - has been doubted by advocates of interdependency and globalisation. But in the long run, even those accounts seem to have been absorbed by the dominant 'neo-neo consensus'. It would certainly be difficult to deny the fact that state preferences and military power continue to be crucial variables in international politics, regardless of the question whether they articulate themselves through direct inter-state relations or in more complex forms of multi-level bargaining. Second, the ongoing empirical relevance of (neo)realist thought is reflected by the huge influence of state-centric and security-oriented reasoning as it is routinely applied by major policy consultants and think tanks, especially in the US. This grammar provides a grammatical description of Palula, an Indo-Aryan language of the Shina group. The language is spoken by about 10,000 people in the Chitral district in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. This is the first extensive description of the formerly little-documented Palula language, and is one of only a few in-depth studies available for languages in the extremely multilingual Hindukush-Karakoram region. The grammar is based on original fieldwork data, collected over the course of about ten years, commencing in 1998. It is primarily in the form of recorded, mainly narrative, texts, but supplemented by targeted elicitation as well as notes of observed language use. All fieldwork was conducted in close collaboration with the Palula-speaking community, and a number of native speakers took active part in the process of data gathering, annotation and data management. The main areas covered are phonology, morphology and syntax, illustrated with a large number of example items and utterances, but also a few selected lexical topics of some prominence have received a more detailed treatment as part of the morphosyntactic structure. Suggestions for further research that should be undertaken are given throughout the grammar. The approach is theory-informed rather than theory-driven, but an underlying functional-typological framework is assumed. Diachronic development is taken into account, particularly in the area of morphology, and comparisons with other languages and references to areal phenomena are included insofar as they are motivated and available. The description also provides a brief introduction to the speaker community and their immediate environment.

Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: The target of this case study is to present and analyse the drastic false estimations made by BMW in planning and realising the Rover transition as well as its consequences. The worked out mistakes should be generalized in order to give opportunities of their avoidance for future M&A cases. After working out the M&A basics in the 1st chapter, the 2nd chapter deals with the reasons of BMW Management to buy another international manufacturer and gives a clue why the choice fell just on Rover. It opens with an overview of the economic development during the 6 years time period of the Rover takeover. After this, the economic and political environment is shown, also the market situation in the automobile segment in the year of the takeover, followed by the business course and goals of BMW as well as their alternatives. This chapter closes with the strategy and enterprise philosophy of BMW and with a list of the of the Rover Group s assets in 1994. In the 3rd and 4th chapters of this case study the mistakes of the BMW management attempting to integrate Rover into the BMW portfolio are shown and analysed, as well as its consequences for BMW and Rover. The 5th chapter will end with the conclusion, why the Rover takeover went wrong. Zusammenfassung: Ziel der Arbeit ist es, die strategischen Ziele, die Tragweite und die möglichen Folgen von M&A-Transaktionen in den Bereichen Finanzen (Investitionen und operatives Geschäft), Unternehmensführung- und Organisation sowie der Unternehmenskultur anhand dieses Unternehmenskaufes zu untersuchen. Dazu wurde die Arbeit in 6 Teile untergliedert. Im 1. Teil werden die allgemeinen M&A-Grundlagen beleuchtet, insbesondere die Ziele, Erscheinungsformen, rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen als auch die Vor- und Nachteile von M&A-Transaktionen. Im 2. Teil wird das Umfeld von BMW im Jahre 1994 analysiert, die strategischen Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten dargestellt und untersucht, warum gerade die britische Rover Group der für BMW geeignete Übernahmekandidat zu sein schien. Bavaria is by far the most popular destination in Germany for both international and domestic tourists. This is no real surprise since it includes such a wide range of attractions, from historical sights to natural beauty, high culture, relaxation in world-class spas, and hiking, cycling, mountain climbing, and skiing. Castles, palaces, monasteries, churches, and historical towns abound. Its rivers offer great opportunities for watersports as well as easy cycling and hiking routes. The Alps are famous for winter sports while forested mountain ranges are scattered through Bavaria. Munich is the central attraction, with an astonishing range of excellent museums, pleasant beer gardens and beer halls, as well as numerous restaurants ranging from international fast-food chains to haute cuisine. There are classical music concerts and the original Oktoberfest is held here. Nuremberg, with its Nazi history, is also in Bavaria, as are the idyllic Alpine villages of Berchtesgaden and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, not to mention the Romantic Road, with Dinkelsbühl, Augsburg and Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We visit all the best castles (including Neuschwanstein, home of Mad King Ludwig), the museums, churches and historic sites.
