Gregoire was an early nineteenth century French Roman Catholic bishop who turned his attention to the place of African Americans in Catholic and Euro-American thought. His work is, among other things, a devastating critique of Thomas Jefferson's Notes on the State of Virginia, in which the third president muses about black inferiority. Gregoire's views made an American edition difficult, as Jefferson opposed the book's appearance. An Enquiry is one of the few of Gregoire's thirty-plus books to be translated into English, and its publication in Brooklyn in 1810 was an event for African Americans. In this new edition, Graham Hodges presents a pristine reproduction of the original text in modern font, and offers a critical introduction to Gregoire, Franco-American abolitionism, and the influence of this important work on the development of the African American intellectual tradition.
This selection of articles by Robert-Henri Bautier deals with the political and institutional history of France between the 6th and 12th centuries, and is above all concerned with the changing extent of the rulers' power from the rise of the Carolingians onwards. For many years biblical scholars were convinced that the Middle Ages was marked by a so-called pre-critical understanding of the Bible, with only a handful of isolated exceptions -- like Andrew of St. Victor -- popping up as precursors of the historical-critical method. Here, however, Henri de Lubac draws on extensive documentation to demonstrate that even among the Victorines traditional exegesis involving an interplay between the literal and spiritual senses of Scripture is a constant throughout medieval exegesis. The one exception -- a radically important one, de Lubac readily admits -- was Joachim of Flora, whose doctrine is considered in the final chapter of this volume. This third English volume of de Lubac's monumental Medieval Exegesis covers volume 2, part 1 of his French volume and includes both the original Latin notes and an English version of the sources.
Time, as we experience it, is a social and cultural phenomenon. The pioneering study of the social representation of time was by Henri Hubert (1872-1927). Hubert was a core member of the group who worked with Émile Durkheim and a close collaborator with Marcel Mauss. Of all the doctrines attributed to him, those on the resurrection of man and the end of days have evoked the most opposition and controversy, from Antiquity to the Patristic scholarship of today. Professor Crouzel argues that the thought of Origen himself has been consistently misunderstood and distorted, from the time of Methodius of Olympia onwards, and that renewed examination of Origen's own surviving writings can lead to a radically differing assessment of the orthodoxy of his views.
