This ethnography asks the question, what does learning to teach mean to student teachers and to those around them in an exam-driven rural school in China? The author writes of the process of using the assessment as a tool for teacher learning, understanding disadvantaged students in the community of practice, and of beginning teachers seeking their identities. She offers a perspective of learning to teach with assessment instead of for assessment, and examines how it shapes the learn-to-teach experiences.
This book in the ELT in Context series, coauthored by a Chinese teacher of English in China and an American teacher of English who worked in China, is a powerful example of international collaboration and highlights one of the distinctive features of this series. In this new volume, Joel Heng Hartse describes working as a foreign teacher of English at Zhejiang University and Jiang Dong describes his work as a local teacher of English at Yuanpei College. This combination brings together two equally important and complementary areas of expertise, in which one teacher-author can be considered to be an expert in the ELT system of that country he was educated in and is the product of that system, while the other teacher-author can be considered to be an expert in the use of the target language, in this case, English.

This SpringerBrief explains the emerging cyber threats that undermine Android application security. It further explores the opportunity to leverage the cutting-edge semantics and context–aware techniques to defend against such threats, including zero-day Android malware, deep software vulnerabilities, privacy breach and insufficient security warnings in app descriptions. The authors begin by introducing the background of the field, explaining the general operating system, programming features, and security mechanisms. The authors capture the semantic-level behavior of mobile applications and use it to reliably detect malware variants and zero-day malware. Next, they propose an automatic patch generation technique to detect and block dangerous information flow. A bytecode rewriting technique is used to confine privacy leakage. User-awareness, a key factor of security risks, is addressed by automatically translating security-related program semantics into natural language descriptions. Frequent behavior mining is used to discover and compress common semantics. As a result, the produced descriptions are security-sensitive, human-understandable and concise.By covering the background, current threats, and future work in this field, the brief is suitable for both professionals in industry and advanced-level students working in mobile security and applications. The rapid modernization of the Chinese Navy is a well-documented reality of the post-Cold War world. In two decades, the People's Liberation Army Navy has evolved from a backward force composed of obsolete platforms into a reasonably modern fleet whose growth is significantly shaking the naval balance in East Asia. The rationale behind China's contemporary rise at sea remains, however, difficult to grasp and few people have tried to see how the current structure of the international system has shaped Chinese choices. This book makes sense of Chinese priorities in its naval modernization in a 'robust' offensive realist framework. Drawing on Barry Posen's works on sources of military doctrine, it argues that the orientation of Beijing's choices concerning its naval forces can essentially be explained by China's position as a potential regional hegemon. Yves-Heng Lim highlights how a rising state develops naval power to fulfil its security objectives, a theoretical perspective that goes farther than the sole Chinese case.

Professor Chan Heng Chee is the Institute of Policy Studies' 7th S R Nathan Fellow for the Study of Singapore. This book presents an intensive study on the biogeochemical cycle of mercury in a river-reservoir system in Wujiang River Basin, the upper branch of the Yangtze River. Six reservoirs located in the mainstream of the Wujiang River and their corresponding inflow/outflow rivers were selected for inclusion in this study, which was conducted by researchers from the Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The concentration and distribution of Hg in reservoirs (the water column, sediment, sediment pore water), inflow/outflow rivers of reservoirs, and wet deposition in Wujiang River Basin were systematically investigated, and measurements were taken of the water/air exchange flux of gaseous elemental mercury (GEM). On the basis of the data gathered, a detailed mass balance of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) in the six reservoirs was developed. In addition, the book identifies the primary factors controlling Hg methylation in the river-reservoir system in Wujiang River Basin. The accumulation and bio-magnification of Hg species within food chains in reservoirs and human health risk of MeHg exposure through fish consumption are also included in this book.

This book systematically studies the feedback control and filtering problems for nonlinear plants with limited communication channels based on T-S fuzzy models.
