Coultrane is an action/adventure novel about a young executive in a sprawling, family-owned multinational company, a story of camaraderie but, also, a story of intrigue, corruption, greed and murder. Calvin Coultrane's quick fists and agile mind have made him the go-to man for any family member with a problem as well as the chief troubleshooter for the corporation. The family's confidence in his abilities has always been at odds with his reputation as the family rebel. When he stumbles across evidence of fraud, his attempts to investigate are met with scorn and anger by his father and older brother who view his work as criticism of their abilities. As he searches for evidence through the back streets and corridors of power in the mid-east, Brazil and the United States, from the nitty-gritty of the souk to the Country Club of his nouveau riche parents, from the formality of the board room to the swirling camaraderie and intrigue of the extended family he realizes the several near-misses he survived were, in fact, attempts on his life. Too soon, he must confront his family at a board meeting with disastrous results.

This book is about William Will Glenn Hurt, who is now twenty-two years of age. As a young child, he was diagnosed as having atypical autism. Later, this diagnosis was confirmed, and a completed IQ test determined his IQ to be 52. None of this was a deterrent to Will or his family. He was already well on his way to becoming a technology genius but, more importantly, to leaving every person he met with a smile on their face and a new determination in their heart. Will is a welcome volunteer in justice centers and courthouses around the State of Kentucky, the local school system, chambers of commerce, administrative offices of the courts, judicial conferences, and any place else he is invited. Will has two concerns: when he has to retire and the very rare day when he may have a vacancy on his volunteer calendar.
The most comprehensive and enjoyable guide to traveling the highway, from British Columbia up to Prudhoe Bay. Covers Fairbanks, Anchorage, Denali National Park, Valdez and much more. Filled with inside tips on where to see wildlife, the sites you shouldn't miss, the best places to camp. You'll also find information on sidetrips along alternate highways: the Top-of-the-World, the Haines, the Stewart-Cassiar, the South Klondike, the Richardson and the Glen. A one-stop resource for Alaska-bound travelers. Includes a detailed chapter on the Alaska Marine Highway, the ferry system that is one of the best ways to see and reach otherwise inaccessible areas. While the Milepost will give you every pullout and scenic view on the highway, this book is great reading about what to do, and what to see on your way. The information is very accurate and interesting. In this book, when you look up a certain place you end up reading on and on.--Amazon.com customer I recently rode my motorcycle up the Alaska Highway and space was pretty limited. I photocopied pages out of various other books, but brought this one along intact. It stayed in my tankbag every day, was brought out at every meal, and was pored over in hotel rooms at night. I'm also a writer, and my Adventure Guide to the Alaska Highway became my de facto notebook on the trip--post-it notes of every color peek out from its pages; notes line the margins. There are a finite number of places to stop along the Alaska Highway; most guidebooks will give you pretty much all of them. What makes this one different is its tone. The authors obvious enjoy both the road and writing about it. Personal anecdotes are lightly sprinkled into the text, giving the impression that yes, the authors know what they're talking about. I learned little bits of history about the areas I rode through; not so much that it weighed down the book, but just enough to pique my interest and send me scampering to the library once I got back. Also, the book is laid out very well. The font is easy on the eyes; bold section headers made it easy to find what I was looking for, even while balancing the book on my tankbag after pulling to the side of some gravelly road in the middle of nowhere.--Carolyn Boyce, reader If you think you'll ever want to plan a trip either by car or motorcycle to the great state of Alaska, this book is a must-have. Not only does provide everything you could ever ask for, it comes in a small package that packs away nicely.-- Big D (reader) I took this book with the AAA guidebook on my trip to Alaska, read the AAA intro on the plane there and read only this book for the rest of the trip. We traveled more than 2,000 miles on the Alaska Highway. This book has been a great companion and guide book wherever we go. I even did some more reading on the plane back home because the writing was interesting. It may be partly because Alaska is such an interesting subject; but the book is definitely fun to read.--Amazon.com customer

In 1967, George Henderson, the son of uneducated Alabama sharecroppers, accepted a full-time professorship at the University of Oklahoma, despite his mentor's warning to avoid the "redneck school in a backward state." Henderson became the university's third African American professor, a hire that seemed to suggest the dissolving of racial divides. However, when real estate agents in the university town of Norman denied the Henderson family their first three choices of homes, the sociologist and educator realized he still faced some formidable challenges. In this stirring memoir, Henderson recounts his formative years at the University of Oklahoma, during the late 1960s and early 1970s. He describes in graphic detail the obstacles that he and other African Americans faced within the university community, a place of "white privilege, black separatism, and campus-wide indifference to bigotry." As an adviser and mentor to young black students who wanted to do something about these conditions, Henderson found himself at the forefront of collective efforts to improve race relations at the university. Henderson is quick to acknowledge that he and his fellow activists did not abolish all vestiges of racial oppression. But they set in motion a host of institutional changes that continue to this day. In Henderson's words, "we were ordinary people who sometimes did extraordinary things." Capturing what was perhaps the most tumultuous era in the history of American higher education, Race and the University includes valuable recollections of former student activists who helped transform the University of Oklahoma into one of the nation's most diverse college campuses.

“Henderson teaches us how to wonder anew with a new vision of science illuminated by a rich range of literature, philosophy, art, and music.” —Hugh Aldersey-Williams, author of Dutch Light We live in a world that is known, every corner thoroughly explored. But has this knowledge cost us the ability to wonder? Wonder, Caspar Henderson argues, is at its most supremely valuable in just such a world because it reaffirms our humanity and gives us hope for the future. That’s the power of wonder, and that’s what we should aim to cultivate in our lives. But what are the wonders of the modern world? Henderson’s brilliant exploration borrows from the form of one of the oldest and most widely known sources of wonder: maps. Large, detailed mappae mundi invited people in medieval Europe to vividly imagine places and possibilities they had never seen before: manticores with the head of a man, the body of a lion, and the stinging tail of a scorpion; tribes of one-eyed men who fought griffins for diamonds; and fearsome Scythian warriors who drank the blood of their enemies from their skulls. A New Map of Wonders explores these and other realms of the wonderful, in different times and cultures and in the present day, taking readers from Aboriginal Australian landscapes to sacred sites in Great Britain, all the while keeping sight questions such as the cognitive basis of wonder and the relationship between wonder and science. Beautifully illustrated and written with wit and moral complexity, this sequel to The Book of Barely Imagined Beings is a fascinating account of the power of wonder and an unforgettable meditation on its importance to our future.
“An exciting insider’s look at Projects Mercury, Gemini and Apollo . . . NASA’s internal politics, disasters, glitches and close calls” by a pioneering astronaut (Publishers Weekly). Gordon “Gordo” Cooper was one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, pilot for Apollo X, head of flight crew operations for the United States’ first orbiting space station, and the last American to venture into space alone. In this astonishing memoir—written with #1 New York Times bestseller Bruce Henderson—Cooper crosses paths with such aviation luminaries as Amelia Earhart, Wiley Post, and German rocket scientist Wernher von Braun; he shares his early days at Edwards Air Force Base and the endeavors that became the basis for The Right Stuff; he takes us inside NASA with candid accounts of his defeats and accomplishments; he reflects on the triumphs and tragedies of his heroic colleagues; and he finally reveals the reasons behind his belief in extraterrestrial intelligence, including the US military’s long-standing UFO cover-ups. Buckle yourself in for a breathtaking ride because in Leap of Faith, Gordon Cooper takes readers to places they’ve never been before.
In the summer of 1955, a surge of anti-black violence included the kidnapping and brutal murder of fourteen-year-old Emmett Till. This crime provoked widespread and assertive protests from black and white Americans. By December 1955, the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott led by Martin Luther King, Jr. began a protracted campaign of nonviolent civil disobedience to protest segregation that attracted national and international attention. In 1956, a group of Southern senators and congressmen signed the “Southern Manifesto,” vowing resistance to racial integration by all “lawful means.” Opposition heightened in 1957–1958 during the crisis over integration at Little Rock’s Central High School. At the same time, the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights led to a successful drive for passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1957 and continued to press for even stronger legislation. NAACP Youth Council chapters staged sit-ins at whites-only lunch counters, sparking a movement against segregation in public accommodations throughout the South in 1960. In this book, you get to sit with Clarence Henderson at the Woolworth food counter, where only white people had the privilege to have a meal. Nonviolent direct action increased during the presidency of John F. Kennedy, beginning with the 1961 Freedom Rides. Hundreds of demonstrations erupted in cities and towns across the nation. Dr. Paul Brintley, D.Min.
In January 1952, Aileen Kilgore was teaching forty-three fourth graders at a public school in Northport, Alabama. Her life, filled with lesson preparations, in-service meetings, countywide meetings, and special projects, seemed grim, and she resolved to change it. Remembering tales she'd heard of the Big Bend region in Texas, she wrote to the school board at Alpine, applying for a position. To her surprise an offer came back to teach at a new school within the Big Bend National Park. She accepted. The young schoolteacher was at first overwhelmed by Big Bend--the wildness, the limitless space, the isolation, and the exuberant Texas children. But she soon came to love the area and the people. During her first year at Panther Junction, she met one special ranger named Art Henderson. When he was transferred to the Blue Ridge Parkway that summer, there was a hole in her life. During her two years at Panther Junction, Aileen wrote long and frequent letters--to her father working for the railroad at Boligee, Alabama, to her mother and sister living in Brookwood, Alabama, to her sisters in Tuscaloosa and San Diego, and finally, the second year, to Art Henderson. Those edited letters make up this book.

By writing the book of the "Ancient Alien Angels the Healing of Billie", I am releasing my anger at society and religion and mostly my parents for the abuse that I had placed upon me by their actions thoughts. Then through forgiveness I set myself free of the past and releasing them from me so that they no longer have a hold or say or power in my life. I have taken back my power from them and they no longer can make me feel like a victim a helpless child that I no longer view myself as a victim in life. My book is an in depth look into my life from birth to now 65 years later every event in my life I have seen and from the eyes of the child within through my teen age years into adult hood from anger and hate to love and peace within. I had locked away the inner child not wanting to face my past and as society religion and my parents had made me feel like a bad person and I did not want to show the world around me my dark past and I locked Billie in a cage and hid him from myself and the world and now Billie is free and so am I.

In this photographic history of Johnstown, readers will enjoy more than two hundred rare images, many published here for the first time, from the collections of historical organizations and private individuals. After enduring three devastating floods, residents have adopted the phrase "This town won't die" as a testament to their gritty determination to survive and to be seen as more than flood victims.
