When Helga Schneider was four, her mother, Traudi, abandoned her to pursue her career. In 1998, Helga received a letter asking her to visit Traudi, now 90-years old, before she dies. Mother and daughter have met only once after Traudi left, on a disastrous visit where Helga first learnt the terrible secret of her mother's past. Traudi was as an extermination guard in Auschwitz and Ravensbruck and was involved in Nazi 'medical' experiments on prisoners. She has never expressed even the slightest remorse for her actions, yet Helga still hopes that at this final meeting she will find some way to forgive her mother.

And with Russian victory the survivors could not look forward a return to peacetime but rather to pillage and rape. It was only gradually that Schneider's life returned to some kind of normality, as her beloved father returned from the front, carrying his own scars of the war. This shocking book evokes the reality of life in a wartime city in all its brutality and deprivation, while retaining a kernel of hope that while life remains not all is lost.

It is therefore somewhat surprising that--except for the authors' program of research dating from the late 1980s--virtually no studies on the cognitive processes of professional actors can be found in the literature. These experts not only routinely memorize hours of verbal material in a very short time, but they retrieve it verbatim along with the accompanying gestures, movements, thoughts, and emotions of the characters. The mental processes involved in this task constitute the subject of this recent research and are described in detail in this book.

The present Second Supplement updates the Index by inclusion of the volumes which appeared up to the end of 1987. With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the GmeLin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1924 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remains the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting, and further data handling were performed with the aid of aseries of computer programs developed by statt members of the former "OnLine Group" of the GmeLin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and by the printer" Universitäts druckerei H. Stürtz AG, Würzburg ". Whereas the Handbook itself will continue to appear in printed form, the present Second Supplement of the Index is intended to be the last one issued in print. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the GmeLin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be updated annually to include the pubLished Handbook volumes.

The flavonoids, one of the most numerous and widespread groups of natural constituents, are important to man not only because they contribute to plant colour but also because many members (e.g. coumestrol, phloridzin, rotenone) are physiologically active. Nearly two thousand substances have been described and as a group they are universally distributed among vascular plants. Although the anthocyanins have an undisputed function as plant pigments, the raison d'etre for the more widely distributed colourless flavones and flavonols still remains a mystery. It is perhaps the challenge of discovering these yet undisc10sed functions which has caused the considerable resurgence of interest in flavonoids during the last decade. This book attempts to summarize progress that has been made in the study of these constituents since the first comprehensive monograph on the chemistry of the flavonoid compounds was published, under the editorship of T. A. Geissman, in 1962. The present volume is divided into three parts. The first section (Chapters 1-4) deals with advances in chemistry, the main emphasis being on spectral techniques to take into account the re cent successful applications of NMR and mass spectral measurements to structural identifications. Recent developments in isolation techniques and in synthesis are also covered in this section. Advances in chemical knowledge of individual c1asses of flavonoid are mentioned inter aha in later chapters of the book.

New stimuli are given, and innovative ways of modeling geologic strata by mollifier magnetometric techniques are shown. Potential data sets primarily of terrestrial origin constitute the main data basis in the book. For deep geology, the geomathematical decorrelation methods are designed in such a way that depth information (e.g., in boreholes) may be canonically entered. Overall, this book provides pioneering and ground-breaking innovative mathematical knowledge as a transfer methodology from the “reality space” of magnetometric measurements into the “virtual space” of mathematical-numerical modeling structures and mollifier solutions with novel geological application areas. Public debates on the benefits and dangers of mass literacy prompted nineteenth-century British authors to write about illiteracy. Since the early twentieth century writers outside Europe have paid increasing attention to the subject as a measure both of cultural dependence and independence. So far literary studies has taken little notice of this. The Non-Literate Other: Readings of Illiteracy in Twentieth-Century Novels in English offers explanations for this lack of interest in illiteracy amongst scholars of literature, and attempts to remedy this neglect by posing the question of how writers use their literacy to write about a condition radically unlike their own. Answers to this question are given in the analysis of nineteen works featuring illiterates yet never before studied for doing so. I was born and raised in Germany. After my father’s death, my mother spent many winters with my husband and I here in Florida. During these visits, she and I transcribed my father’s World War II diaries into German from the old “Gabelsberger” shorthand, which only Mama was able to read. Subsequently, I translated them into English. These diaries fortunately were discovered by my sister Sigrid in the attic upon the sale of the old family home after my father’s passing in 1989. She felt Mama and I should translate these books for the family. At a later point many friends and acquaintances encouraged me, to publish this diary, to document his thoughts, experiences, and innermost feelings from the beginning of his conscripted military service in 1939 through 1946, when he returned home after being released from a French POW labor camp. During the latter part of 1946 and into 1947, an epilog describes his daily struggles to return to normalcy, the resumption of his teaching career, and the search for food to feed his family. He describes his touching love for his family, as well as his anger and hatred for the insane war and its inept leaders. A war, he was forced to participate in as an ordinary German soldier. Many times he naively commented very unfavorably, sometimes using “choice words” about Hitler, the Nazi Party, and his superiors, a risk, if found out, could have cost him his life. I myself have many memories of the war and its horrors as a little girl without a father, spending night after night in a bunker, the “liberation” of our small town by the Americans. This has left deep and lasting impressions on me. Later on, I met a wonderful American with whom I fell in love and married, with my father proudly walking me down the aisle. This, in spite of the resentment he held against Americans, for shamefully turning him over to the French as a forced labor POW. I remember his sadness, when his little “Murschel”, as he used to call me, left for America with his conviction that if he was lucky, he may be able to see me only once more during his lifetime. However, he was able to enjoy many trips to the United States and I with my family visited my parents often in Germany. After reading his legacy, I knew, I have my beloved father’s permission to share his writings with others, and by doing so, honor his memory.

With this Second Supplement all compounds described in the Gmelin Handbook of Inorganic Chemistry in the period between 1924 and 1987 can be located. The basic structure of the Formula Index remains the same as in the previous editions. Computer techniques were employed in the preparation and print of the Second Supple ment. The data acquisition, sorting, and further data handling were performed with the aid of a series of computer programs developed by staff members of the former" Online Group" of the Gmelin Institute, now at Chemplex GmbH, and by the printer" Universitiits druckerei H. StOrtz AG, WOrzburg". Whereas the Handbook itself will continue to appear in printed form, the present Second Supplement of the Index is intended to be the last one issued in print. The cumulated contents of the Index and its Supplements are contained in the Gmelin Formula Index (GFI) database which is available to the scientific community via STN. This database will be updated annually to include the published Handbook volumes.

In this non-fictional biography, Helga Thieroff relates the life of her gifted son Kai from his birth up until his suicide at the age of 21. She not only gives a vivid account of the various stages of Kai's life from the perspective of a mother who experiences a rollercoaster ride of emotions in accompanying her child; she also describes the "different" nature of gifted children and adolescents from a professional viewpoint and outlines the problems and misunderstandings these young people encounter at school and in society at large. Helga Thieroff studied educational science, psychology and general linguistics in Bayreuth and Berlin. Motivated by her experience with her own gifted son, she founded the "Children's Club", the first preschool project for gifted children in Berlin, in 1990. Since her move to Rhineland-Palatinate in the mid-nineties, she has operated a specialised psychological and educational practice for gifted children. In 2000 she founded the "Children's College" in Neuwied (Begabtenzentrum Rheinland-Pfalz), an extracurricular support facility for gifted children and adolescents, which she has since managed. Helga Thieroff was awarded the Order of Merit with Ribbon of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2011 for her longstanding commitment to gifted people. Originally published in 1985, Problem Solving and Intelligence was the result of the author’s efforts to understand the nature of human intelligence and the differences in the cognitive functioning of individuals which we observe again and again. The book contains two types of material. First it presents an overview of major contributions to the conceptualization and investigation of problem solving and intelligence, which was derived from the extensive, largely non-cumulative literature at the time. Second it reports a comprehensive, empirical study of the manifestation of intelligence in problem solving. The subject matter was at the interface of three traditional areas of psychological inquiry: namely, the study of cognitive processes, individual differences, and the characteristics of the stimulus. What was innovative is that intellectual performance is investigated in relation to the simultaneous operation of variables from these dimensions. The book was intended, primarily, as a contribution to the understanding and investigation of the nature of intelligent behavior, as well as an introduction to intelligence and problem solving. Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.
