In this dissertation, Marie-Hélène Larraufie develops original radical and pallado-catalyzed methodologies to enable the synthesis of several classes of bioactive nitrogen-containing heterocycles. New radical cascades employing the N-acylcyanamide moiety offer straightforward routes to quinazolinones and guanidines, as well as new insights into the mechanism of homolytic aromatic substitutions. In parallel, Larraufie expands the scope of visible light photoredox catalysis to the ring opening of epoxides and aziridines, thus providing new sustainable alternatives for the generation of radicals. Furthermore, in a collaborative effort with the Catellani group, the author investigates dual palladium/norbornene catalysis. First, she develops a C-amination coupling variant of the Catellani reaction with unprotected amines which provides an expeditious route to phenanthridines. Then, she examines the influence of the chelating effect on Pd(IV) intermediates reactivity with the help of experimental studies and DFT calculations. The work in this thesis has resulted in numerous publications in high impact journals.The clarity and depth of the experimental section will be useful for students and researchers working in this field.
The Toxic Museum examines the use of pesticides in German museum collections at the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries. It reconstructs the research of substances against harmful insects in museum collections within the historical context of the formation of nation-states, colonialism, a strengthening chemical industry, the First World War, and the resulting broad-based hygiene movement through the lens of the Ethnologisches Museum (Ethnological Museum) in Berlin. Because of their persistence, the consequences of the use of pesticides in museum collections are now unmistakable and well documented in many places. Numerous objects are highly contaminated and are only accessible under difficult conditions regarding occupational health and safety. This creates obstacles for conservation and scientific processing, as well as for mediation in the context of exhibitions and external loans. The most precarious and difficult situations arise when contaminated museum objects are repatriated to their countries of origin. This monograph examines contemporary challenges in the 21st century museum landscape and contextualises the history of pesticide use at the turn of the 20th century. The Toxic Museum will be of great interest to students and scholars working in conservation, museology, monument preservation, art and cultural studies, ethnology, history, and economics.
This volume contains the proceedings of the Third International Conference on Algebraic and Logic Programming, held in Pisa, Italy, September 2-4, 1992. Like the two previous conferences in Germany in 1988 and France in 1990, the third conference aims at strengthening the connections betweenalgebraic techniques and logic programming. On the one hand, logic programming has been very successful during the last decades and more and more systems compete in enhancing its expressive power. On the other hand, concepts like functions, equality theory, and modularity are particularly well handled in an algebraic framework. Common foundations of both approaches have recently been developed, and this conference is a forum for people from both areas to exchange ideas, results, and experiences. The book covers the following topics: semantics ofalgebraic and logic programming; integration of functional and logic programming; term rewriting, narrowing, and resolution; constraintlogic programming and theorem proving; concurrent features in algebraic and logic programming languages; and implementation issues.

This volume contains the proceedings of AMAST 2002, the 9th International Conference on Algebraic Methodology and Software Technology, held during September 9–13, 2002, in Saint-Gilles-les-Bains, R ́eunion Island, France. The major goal of the AMAST conferences is to promote research that may lead to setting software technology on a ?rm mathematical basis. This goal is achieved through a large international cooperation with contributions from both academia and industry. Developing a software technology on a mathematical basis p- duces software that is: (a) correct, and the correctness can be proved mathem- ically, (b) safe, so that it can be used in the implementation of critical systems, (c) portable, i. e. , independent of computing platforms and language generations, (d) evolutionary, i. e. , it is self-adaptable and evolves with the problem domain. All previous AMAST conferences, which were held in Iowa City (1989, 1991), Twente (1993), Montreal (1995), Munich (1996), Sydney (1997), Manaus (1999), and Iowa City (2000), made contributions to the AMAST goals by reporting and disseminating academic and industrial achievements within the AMAST area of interest. During these meetings, AMAST attracted an international following among researchers and practitioners interested in software technology, progr- ming methodology, and their algebraic, and logical foundations.
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 21st International Colloquium on Trees in Algebra and Programming, CAAP '96, held in Linköping, Sweden, in April 1996. The 21 full revised papers presented were selected from 44 submissions; also included are invited papers by Samson Abramsky and Frank Pfenning. In keeping with the tradition of the CAAP conferences, this volume covers algebraic, logical, and combinatorial properties of discrete structures and their application to computer science, in particular to the theory of computation and to programming theory.
