Helen L. Parish presents an innovative new study of Reformation attitudes to medieval Christianity, revealing the process by which the medieval past was rewritten by Reformation propagandists. This fascinating account sheds light on how the myths and legends of the middle ages were reconstructed, reinterpreted, and formed into a historical base for the Protestant church in the sixteenth century. Crossing the often artificial boundary between medieval and modern history, Parish draws upon a valuable selection of writings on the lives of the saints from both periods, and addresses ongoing debates over the relationship between religion and the supernatural in early modern Europe. Setting key case studies in a broad conceptual framework, Monks, Miracles and Magic is essential reading for all those with an interest in the construction of the Protestant church, and its medieval past.

UK health and social care are increasingly being asked to work together across traditional agency boundaries. Although this sounds easy in theory, doing it in practice is complicated and difficult. In many cases, moreover, current training programmes, research and textbooks are even more divided than front-line services, and practitioners and managers are often being given the task of making partnerships work without the necessary support. Against this background, the second edition of this bestselling book provides a concise 'warts and all' introduction to partnership and integration, summarising updated references to current policy and research, setting out useful frameworks and approaches, and helping policy makers and practitioners to work more effectively together, with greater emphasis on ‘integrated care’. Written by the leading authors in the field and fully updated since the Health and Social Care Act 2012, the book is also fully evidence- and research-based, while still being accessible and applicable to everyday practice. Aimed at students, practitioners, managers and policy makers in health and social care, and including new reflective exercises and boxed examples, this is still the one book that everyone in the field should read.
Explains how precious fiction is to contemporary British fiction readers, and how they draw on it to tell the stories of their lives. Draws on over 500 interviews with and questionnaires from women readers and writers.
This present work is an epitome of the diary of Scottish Covenanter minister James Cuthbertson, which he compiled during his missionary travels throughout the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania. The work contains a complete list of marriages, giving the names of the bride and groom and date of marriage; a complete list of baptisms, giving the name of the child, the name of the parent, and the date of baptism; and a selection of quotations pertaining to the weddings and baptisms he performed during his long ministry.
This study explores the dynamics of violence within John's Gospel, focusing on the portrayal of the character of Jesus. It offers an understanding of the Johannine Jesus that counters the traditional model of a serene figure who maintains sovereign control over his environment. Establishing the prevalence of material indicating opposition to Jesus, it argues that his experience and perception of victimization are key to his identity. Furthermore, it is suggested that Jesus colludes with his victimizers, raising the issue of who is responsible for his betrayal and death. Drawing on the disciplines of victimology, literary criticism and liberation theology, the work comprises targeted exegesis of substantial portions of the Gospel, revealing the prominence of the theme of violence and raising a number of christological questions.
The right to play sport fairly and safely is universally recognized. Consequently, there have always been regulations about competition in which people may compete - Male, Female, under-age, certain weight groups, etc. The female category has been traditionally open only to biological female athletes. Recent societal shifts in gender theory proclaim gender as a fluid concept, saying that a person’s gender identity has greater importance than birth sex. Transwomen athletes, born male but identifying as women, demand it is their human right to play in the female category. Following IOC guidance, many sports assented to the change. This means that in a physical contest, biological females are pitted against one special group of biological males, those who identify as women. Female athletes who miss team selection or lose to a transwoman have no other category in which to play. Can transgender inclusion co-exist with fairness, physical safety, and integrity in women’s sport? Is erasure of purely female achievements and records acceptable? Are rewards, fame, affirmative programs, and sporting careers for females not important? Does authentic female sport cease to exist? What are solutions? This text presents the bio-physiological-sport science research that dismantles the myth that there is no performance advantage of transitioned transwomen athletes. It also explores the legal framework protecting sex-divided sport. The focus is on elite competition. There are also implications for grass roots and pre-pubertal children in sport. This text provides essential background for athletes, sports administrators, the public, and LGBT+ communities to debate this hot button issue with openness and respect.

Though located in the heart of Unionist New England, Harvard produced 357 alumni who fought for the South during the Civil War--men not just from the South but from the North as well. This encyclopedic work gathers their stories together for the first time, providing unprecedented biographical coverage of the Crimson Confederates. Included are alumni of Harvard College, Law School, Medical School, and Lawrence Scientific School. The emphasis of the entries is on the alumnus's military career, whether as an infantry private or as a signal scout, as a surgeon or as a teacher in the Confederate Naval Academy, as an aide-de-camp or as an artillery captain. The range of participation took these men into all the major battles from the Eastern Theater under Robert E. Lee to the Trans-Mississippi under Richard Taylor and Sterling Price. Their careers spanned firing a gun at Fort Sumter and the earliest battles in Virginia to the closing shots at Bentonville and Mobile. Harvard's general officers included two major generals-- W. H. F. "Rooney" Lee (one of Robert E. Lee's sons) and John Sappington Marmaduke--as well as thirteen brigadiers, among them James Rogers Cooke, Stephen Elliott, States Rights Gist, John Echols, Ben Hardin Helm, Albert Gallatin Jenkins, Bradley Tyler Johnson, and William Booth Taliaferro. Several engineers and scientists from Lawrence Scientific School constructed major fortifications at Vicksburg and in Charleston Harbor, while others worked in the Nitre and Mining Bureau. An appendix of civilian Harvard alumni who served the Confederacy as congressmen, diplomats, jurists, editors, and in other ways is also included. This comprehensive, remarkably detailed reference work will be valuable for researchers and browsers alike. Helen P.
