This biography sheds light on all facets of the life and the achievements of Ernst Zermelo (1871-1953). Zermelo is best-known for the statement of the axiom of choice and his axiomatization of set theory. However, he also worked in applied mathematics and mathematical physics. His dissertation, for example, promoted the calculus of variations, and he created the pivotal method in the theory of rating systems. The presentation of Zermelo's work explores motivations, aims, acceptance, and influence. Selected proofs and information gleaned from letters add to the analysis. The description of his personality owes much to conversations with his late wife Gertrud. This second edition provides additional information. The system of citations has been adapted to that of Zermelo's Collected Works in order to facilitate side-by-side reading and thus profit from the thorough commentaries written for the Collected Works by experts in the respective fields. This book is the first survey in English of literature and film in Nazi Germany. It treats not only works sympathetic to National Socialism, but also works of the so-called Inner Emigration, of the resistance, and those written in prisons and concentration camps. Much of this literature is not easily accessible in German, and not available at all in English translation. Historical and ideological context is provided in chapters covering influential works of the time such as Alfred Rosenberg's The Myth of the Twentieth Century and Houston Stewart Chamberlain's The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century. Schoeps also analyzes Nazi cultural policies, fascist histories of literature, and the role of German studies and Germanists in the Nazi movement. A major section of the book is devoted to film, then a relatively new medium of communication whose propaganda value was clearly recognized by Goebbels, the minister for propaganda and president of the Reich's Chamber of Culture. One of the most interesting areas of research in recent years is the relationship between Hitler's cultural commissars, in particular Goebbels, and the literature and film production of the Nazi years. This book is based on the revised and expanded second German edition, Literatur im Dritten Reich (1933-1945), but has again been revised and expanded, especially the chapter on film and Nazi policies toward the film industry. The chapter on cultural policies has also been expanded to include Himmler's efforts to meddle in this area. New also are sections dealing with Jewish entertainers in concentration camps (for example, Kurt Gerron) and activities of the Jewish Cultural League. Karl-Heinz Schoeps is professor of German at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

From May 31, 2012, to June 3, 2012, the Paradise Bird Festival took place at the small castle Weitersroda, near the county town of Hildburghausen. Today, this singer-songwriter gathering is a fixed institution in southern Thuringia. However, this wasn't always the case: From 2008 to 2012, local Nazis attempted to prevent this event. The brown wolves didn't limit themselves to verbal attacks on social media but, as in previous years, they took action again – setting fire to a participating musician's car in the castle courtyard. Subsequently, singer-songwriter Konstantin Wecker called for solidarity with the organizers of the Paradise Bird Festival. Heinz Michael Vilsmeier heeded Konstantin Wecker's appeal and went to Weitersroda to join the Paradise Birds, where he conducted the following interview with Florian Kirner, also known as Prince Chaos II.

The reader is urged to read these captions as well as the notes so as to - preciate in full the events and people described. I have added a few footnotes to clarify or expand on some matters that may be unfamiliar to non-German readers. Because of the long period of time covered in these pages many of the documents and letters shown and commented upon are different in diction and style from those of today. An - tempt was made in the translation to keep the flavour of the original language and not contemporise it.

The present volume completes the description of the interactions and chemical reactions of elemental tungsten with metallic elements, treating its reactions with antimony, bismuth, and the alkali and alkaline earth metals. The reactions of tungsten with these elements are in most cases confined to surface regions. Corrosion of tungsten and mutual solubility are usually very low. An exception is the W - Be system, in which several intermetallic phases are formed. The surface processes in some of the other systems covered in the present volume evoked considerable scientific and practical interest, documented by the large number of publications. This holds particularly for the Cs-on-W and Ba-on-W surface systems. Cs- and Ba-activated tungsten electrodes were and are used in many technical and laboratory appliances. One example is the Cs diode device for thermionic energy conversion. Surface ionization of Cs and W is widely applied in ion sources and for some time attracted great attention with respect to its potential use in ion rocket propulsion engines. Cs-on-W is also a logical system for basic research on chemisorption due to the propitious chemical, crystallographic, and atomic properties of adsorbent and adsorbate. The majority of existing models for the chemisorption bond has been experimentally checked on this system. The particular interest in the W - Cs and W - Ba systems is reflected in the large portion of the text (256 pages) devoted to these systems.
