Qualitative and Quantitative Results from Cross-Cultural Research in Germany and the United States of America

This book presents case studies and empirical data of a phenomenon which increasingly gains popularity in Western societies: deconversion. There is, the authors argue, no better word than deconversion to describe processes of disengagement from religious orientations because these have much in common with conversion. Termination of membership may eventually be the final step of deconversion, but it involves biographical and psychological dynamics which can and need to be reconstructed by qualitative approaches and analyzed by quantitative instruments.In the Bielefeld-based Cross-Cultural Study on Deconversion disengagement processes from a variety of religious backgrounds in the USA and in Germany were examined, ranging from well-established religious organizations to new religious and fundamentalist groups. Nearly 1,200 persons participated in thestudy and were interviewed from 2002 to 2005. In the focus of the study are 100 deconverts from the USA and from Germany who were examined with narrative interviews, faith development interviews and an extensive questionnaire. For case study elaboration, the study followed a research design with an innovative triangulation of qualitative and quantitative data. Four chapters, corresponding to four types of deconversion, present 21 case studies. The highlights of the research project are new data on spirituality – the deconverts in particular appear to prefer a »more spiritual than religious« self-identification – and in-depth analyses of a variety of deconversion narratives with special focus on personality factors, motivation, attitudes, religious development, psychological well-being and growth, religious fundamentalism and right-wing authoritarianism. The results of this project which was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft are of special relevance for counselling and pastoral care, for religious education and for people concerned with administration and management of religious groups and churches, but also for a wider audience interested in contemporary changes in the religious fields in the USA and Germany.

Indeed, if the legal field is to be understood as instrumental to democracy's cohabitation of individuals, research on dispute resolution remains pre-eminent as a means to understand how individual views differ and how different views can be overcome. As a central part of conflict analysis, such research would assist an interdisciplinary quest for a dynamic understanding of democracy and law. It would focus on how different individuals with different conceptions of the good can live together in their community, in their world. Scientific research in the fields of communication, economics, psychology, history, political theory and philosophy, to name but a few, would side with legal theory in a shared ambition to analyze the way individuals are affected by their views as well as by their institutions, in order to provide society with a dynamic means to solve conflicts and enhance citizenship or legal awareness. Such research necessarily coincides with empathy-oriented education, directed towards an understanding of different conflict positions and the related comprehensive or non-comprehensive views affecting them. An affective education, analyzing all affective mechanisms of societal or interpersonal disputes and their legal or alternative resolution. A clinical education, offering an interactive simulation with regard to these positions and their affective impact, demonstrating how individual views continuously affect the positions taken, how disputes are affected by the legal or other institutions that attempt to solve them, and how the effectiveness of legal or other solutions to the conflict at hand depends on a practice of affective legal analysis. Thus legal and civic education, by way of affective narration and clinical simulation, join affective legal analysis in its endeavor to provide society with a similarly affective and non-rationalizing approach of legal awareness.

This book considers the above phenomena in detail by explaining matter as a conglomeration of charged mass points in the electromagnetic field. Quantum mechanics and Maxwell's theory can then account for the precise description of the interactions between the electromagnetic fields and matter. This book then describes special processes such as 1) the static and quasistatic interactions and 2) dynamic processes, particularly the resonance process. This text also defines a general form for electric and magnetic reactions using the generalized field equation. This book also cites the anharmonic oscillator and the single spin as different examples of electric and magnetic dipole interactions. So beschreibt Karl-Heinz Ladeur schlagwortartig die Selbsttransformation der Gesellschaft in den westlichen Ländern der letzten hundertfünfzig Jahre. Der Untergang eines von monarchischer Repräsentationskraft bestimmten Staates führte auch in den kontinentaleuropäischen Rechtssystemen seit dem späten 19. Jahrhundert zu einer stärkeren Öffnung für eine Welt aus Relationen. Die überkommenen subjektphilosophischen Transzendentalfiguren und vertikalen Begründungsverhältnisse werden durch horizontale Beziehungen ergänzt und ersetzt, an denen zunächst primär Organisationen und Gruppen und heute mehr und mehr sich fortlaufend verändernde Netzwerke beteiligt sind. Auf diese gewandelte gesellschaftliche Situation muss sich das Recht einstellen. Es muss dazu die veränderte Rolle der Ungewissheit verarbeiten, die nicht länger im Sinne klassischer Rationalitätsvorstellungen durch die Gewinnung eines festen Grundes weitgehend beseitigt oder zumindest verdrängt werden kann.
