Lucy Darrington has no choice but to run away from boarding school. Her father, an expert on the supernatural, has been away for too long while doing research in Saarthe, a remote territory in the Pacific Northwest populated by towering redwoods, timber barons, and the Lupine people. But upon arriving, she learns her father is missing: Rumor has it he’s gone in search of dreamwood, a rare tree with magical properties that just might hold the cure for the blight that’s ravaging the forests of Saarthe. Determined to find her father (and possibly save Saarthe), Lucy and her vexingly stubborn friend Pete follow William Darrington’s trail to the deadly woods on Devil’s Thumb. As they encounter Lupine princesses, giant sea serpents, and all manner of terrifying creatures, Lucy hasn’t reckoned that the dreamwood itself might be the greatest threat of all.
The colour of carbon matters. Green carbon is the carbon stored in the plants and soil of natural ecosystems and is a vital part of the global carbon cycle. This report is the first in a series that examines the role of natural forests in the storage of carbon, the impacts of human land use activities, and the implications for climate change policy nationally and internationally. REDD ("reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation") is now part of the agenda for the "Bali Action Plan" being debated in the lead-up to the Copenhagen climate change conference in 2009. Currently, international rules are blind to the colour of carbon so that the green carbon in natural forests is not recognized, resulting in perverse outcomes including ongoing deforestation and forest degradation, and the conversion of extensive areas of land to industrial plantations. This report examines REDD policy from a green carbon scientific perspective. Subsequent reports will focus on issues concerning the carbon sequestration potential of commercially logged natural forests, methods for monitoring REDD, and the long term implications of forest policy and management for the global carbon cycle and climate change.
This report is the second in a series that examines the role of natural forests and woodlands in the storage of carbon. Understanding the role of natural ecosystems in carbon storage is an important part of solving the climate change problem. This report presents a landscape-wide green carbon account of the `Great Western Woodlands¿ (GWW), sixteen million hectares of mostly contiguous natural woody vegetation to the east of the wheatbelt in south-western Western Australia. For the first time, we provide an overview of the vegetation structure, climate, geology and historical land use of the GWW, and examine how these interact to affect the carbon dynamics of this region¿s landscape ecosystems. An analysis of time-series of satellite imagery is used to develop a fire history of the GWW since the 1970s. These layers of environmental information, along with field survey data and remotely sensed greenness, are used to construct a spatial model to estimate biomass carbon stocks of the woodlands at the present day, and to infer an upper limit to the carbon sequestration potential of the GWW. A range of management options to enable protection of high quality carbon stocks and restoration of degraded stocks are evaluated.

Along the Rio Grande/Bravo in Big Bend National Park, Texas, land use pressures, such as agriculture and urbanization, have altered natural land cover composition and an invasive grass species, giant cane (Arundo donax) has colonized the floodplain, altering natural conditions. Using a combination of field-collected data and remotely sensed variables, including land cover, habitat structure, and vegetation greenness, and a generalized linear modeling approach, I conducted a two-year field study to evaluate the roles that land cover composition and Arundo donax play in structuring bird and butterfly communities, including the federally threatened Yellow-billed Cuckoo, in riparian habitats of the Rio Grande/Bravo floodplain. Local habitat, immediately surrounding survey locations, explained upwards of 16% of the variance in grassland, shrubland, and forest bird abundance and richness, with natural land cover composition accounting for 74% of the explained variance in best-fitting models. For butterflies, local habitat accounted for upwards of 23% of the explained variance, with natural land cover variables accounting for 100% of the explained variance. Shrubland bird abundance and richness as well as butterfly abundance had a curvilinear relationship to the proportion of agriculture in Mexico, accounting for over 53% of the explained variance in models (R2=0.19; R2=0.22; R2=0.42). Occupancy of the threatened Yellow-billed Cuckoo was best explained by mesquite cover at both the local and broad-extent and was 79% more likely than competing models. My results highlight the importance of natural land cover throughout the Rio Grande/Bravo floodplain in Big Bend National Park in buffering the effects of land use at the boundary of the park and the presence of invasive plants.
Jesus is still in the miracle business!" shares one of the twenty women who reveal the true, short stories of real miracles that took place in their lives. The Fence and the Bridge is about the development of the Canada-US border-security relationship as an outgrowth of the much lengthier Canada-US relationship. It suggests that this relationship has been both highly reflexive and hegemonic over time, and that such realities are embodied in the metaphorical images and texts that describe the Canada-US border over its history. Nicol argues that prominent security motifs, such as themes of free trade, illegal immigration, cross-border crime, terrorism, and territorial sovereignty are not new, nor are they limited to the post-9/11 era. They have developed and evolved at different times and become part of a larger quilt, whose patches are stitched together to create a new fabric and design. Each of the security motifs that now characterize Canada-US border perceptions and relations has a precedent in border-management strategies and border relations in earlier periods. In some cases, these have deep historical roots that date back not just years or decades but centuries. They are part of an evolving North American geopolitical logic that inscribes how borders are perceived, how they function, and what they mean.

An exciting introduction to the scientific interface between biological studies of the brain and behavioural studies of human development. The authors trace the field from its roots in developmental psychology and neuroscience, and highlight some of the most persuasive research findings before anticipating future directions the field may take. They begin with a brief orientation of the brain, along with genetics and epigenetics, and then summarise brain development and plasticity. Later chapters detail the neurodevelopmental basis of a wide variety of human competencies, including perception, language comprehension, socioemotional development, memory systems, literacy and numeracy, and self-regulation. Suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in developmental cognition or neuroscience, this textbook covers the prenatal period through to infancy, childhood, and adolescence. It is pedagogically rich, featuring interviews with leading researchers, learning objectives, review questions, further-reading recommendations, and numerous colour figures. Instructor teaching is supported by lecture slides and a test bank.
This book is dedicated to everyone who lives with chronic pain. It details a family’s personal journey to understand and ultimately overcome this complex condition. The book includes personal reflections, neuroscientific research, theoretical frameworks and the practical plans and activities which the author’s daughter, Kerri, implemented to heal herself from pain and banish the debilitating symptoms which accompanied it from her life. Kerri and her mother hope this book will serve as an inspiration to others to re-examine their own relationship with pain, to find ways to understand and soothe it, and ultimately to heal from it, just as Kerri did.

Can Indigenous and non-Indigenous people live in a treaty relationship despite over 200 years of social, cultural, and political alienation? This is the challenge of reconciliation – and its beautiful promise. Twenty-five years after the Ipperwash crisis, writer and social activist Heather Menzies showed up in Nishnaabe territory in Southwestern Ontario, near where her forebears settled, hoping to meet her would-be treaty kin. She was invited to help document the broken-treaty story behind the crisis, as remembered by Nishnaabe Elders and other community members involved in reclaiming their homeland at Stoney Point. But she soon realized that even the most sincere intentions can be steeped in a colonial mindset that hinders understanding, reconciliation, and healing. In this thoughtful, sensitive, nuanced account, Heather Menzies shares her own decolonizing journey. Her story shows how a settler, through respectful listening, can learn what being in a treaty relationship might mean, and what changes – personal and institutional – are needed to embrace genuine reconciliation.
This book comprises 13 chapters discussing pest management and phytosanitary trade barriers; agricultural warfare and bioterrorism using invasive species; managing risk of pest introduction; and postharvest phytosanitary disinfestation.
Still reeling from the scandal that cost him his badge, Randy Mayhill—fallen lawman, dog rescuer, Dr Pepper enthusiast—sees a return from community exile in the form of a dead hog trapper perched on a fence. The fence belongs to the late Van Woods, Mayhill’s best friend and the reason for his spectacular fall. Determined to protect Van’s land and family from another scandal, Mayhill ignores the sherriff who replaced him and investigates the death of the unidentified man. His quest crosses with two others: Birdie, Van’s surly, mourning daughter, who has no intention of sitting idly by and leaving her father’s legacy in Mayhill’s hands; and Bradley, Birdie’s slow, malnourished but loyal friend, whose desperation to escape a life of poverty has him working with local criminals, and possibly a murderer. A riveting debut novel about family and loyalty, old grudges and new lives, AIN’T NOBODY NOBODY is like a cross between Faulkner and “Breaking Bad”, from a talented new writer with an authentic Texas voice.

An indispensable gateway for all those with a more than superficial interest in what is, and what has been, happening in this nation so much the focus of attention today.
Experiential and analytic, the work of Heather Ramsdell is perceptually acute and sensually resonant. The poems in Heather Ramsdell's book LOST WAX map a metaphysical treasure hunt, here a stick, there a door, a closet, a shirt. As the book unfolds, the accretion of their ascetic values forms an evermore human shape in a symphony of poems that is original and profoundly full of wonder.--James Tate.
