In the third of the It's Never Too Late series, Angie turns - ack! - fifty. But Angie's life is good: her daughter is happily married, her son gainfully employed, her ex has exited, and her best friends are, well, as close to normal as they've ever been (which is not to say very close). So Angie is ready to turn inward to contemplate the meaning of life (and figure out how to paint those little white quarter moons on her French nails). But the life that Angie thought was certain and settled falls apart - again! Angie gets a new boss - a young man who subscribes to the Idi Amin School of Management - to micro-manage her days. Tim hints at being promoted from Angie's boyfriend to fiance, but her indecision invites an attractive rival to come on Tim's scene. Angie's daughter becomes pregnant, her son turns strangely unfocused, and her own inner voices stop speaking to one another. Oh, and Angie's ex tries to rekindle a flame with her, while his gargantuan girlfriend seems intent on snuffing Angie out completely! Once again, Angie's three best friends -- women who have seen her through childbirth, divorce, and over thirty years of fluctuating hemlines - come to the rescue using a combination of bikini waxes, belly dance, and Myers-Briggs (honestly, you had to be there). Does Angie figure it all out? Well, some of it. She figures out that you only find yourself when you stop searching, that love really is lovelier the second time around.
After twenty-six years, my husband just dumped me for the Neighborhood Watch captain, a woman the size of a Winnebago. Oh, and then he squanders all of our savings and investments. Normally, I wouldhandle this with a week at a spa I can't afford, but the Save Angie Crisis Intervention Team (aka my best friends) insists that instead I need one night of hot, wanton, emotionally uncomplicated sex. A one-night stand. Who knew? If only moving on were so simple. Then I wouldn't suddenly be this close to becoming Sacramento's latest scandal, ruining my son's career, and wetting my pants in this rented G.I. Joe costume I'm wearing (thereby forfeiting my deposit). My friends got me into this, and they've gotta get me out. It's never too late, ladies ...
“I’m doing the right thing, not feeding myself. It’s the only thing I can do, so I will do it. Gloria can somehow have the energy I don’t take in, and it will help her stay alive.” Twenty years ago, fourteen-year-old Valerie rushed off for lunch with her boyfriend instead of properly putting away a packet of balloons, and her little brother choked to death on his third birthday. In response, Valerie locked down every aspect of her life so she could never lose control like that again, and she’s still doing that today. So when her sister Gloria is found comatose after an apparently random attack, Valerie is desperate to do something, anything, to save her only remaining sibling. But as a financial controller for a “nothing bigger than a size six” fashion designer, she has no medical background and no idea of how to help. But she has to find a way. Since Gloria has always wanted to be a size zero, Valerie hits on food as the answer: by eating less, she will lose the weight Gloria now can’t and somehow save her sister that way. But when “eating less” turns into a frantic starvation diet to reach size zero before Gloria dies, will Valerie’s self control save her sister or destroy her own life?
