In the early nineteenth century, critics believed the press was destroying social structure--eroding law and order and the institutions of the family, religion, and education. To counter these effects they advocated, among other things, eradicating Sunday newspapers and "subversive" content such as news of crime, sex, and sporting events. Dicken-Garcia traces the relationship between societal values and the press coverage of issues and events. Setting out to tame the press by understanding it, she argues, critics had begun to dissect it. In the process, they articulated the rudiments of journalistic theory, and proposed what issues should be addressed by journalists, what functions should be undertaken, and what standards should be imposed.

As a first step Françoise le Saux investigates the English poet's handling of his main source, Wace's Roman de Brut, to determine what principles guided the composition of the English Brut. These established, she is able to distinguish between different sorts of variation from the Roman, thereby providing norms against which to gauge the probability of further, secondary sources. Additional sources are then identified, in the various fields suggested by the poem: historical; literary; and religious writings (or tales) in Welsh, English, Latin and French and perhaps even Scandinavian.
Invidious distinctions on the basis of race and overt racism were central features in American colonial policy in the Philippines from 1898 to 1947, as America transported its domestic racial policy to the island colony. This collection by young Filipino scholars analyzes American colonialism and its impact on administration and attitudes in the Philippines through the prism of American racial tradition, a structural concept which refers to beliefs, attitudes, images, classifications, laws, and social customs that shape race relations and racial formation in multiracial and colonial societies. The dominance of this tradition was manifested in the wanton prerogatives of the U.S. Congress and others who helped to carry out colonial policy in the region. The Spanish flexible racial tradition had resulted in a system based on ethnicity and class as determinants of social and economic structure, while the rigid U.S. racial tradition assigned race the more dominant role. The cultural affinity between the early individual American administrators and the Filipino elite, however, meant that class-based distinctions in the islands were not broken up. Thus, the extreme elitist character of the Philippines' economy and society persisted and became impervious to the influences which in other Asian countries led to a progressive weakening of elite structures as the 20th century advanced.

The story is set at Caro Farm in the small village of Trewen in Cornwall, UK. There are two stories within the book. One about two small boys from the farm and the other about two calves who escape whilst being loaded at the market. Two boys discover a cache of stolen arms and ammunition in a deserted house. The thieves capture, abduct and take the boys on a fearful journey to Liverpool Docks. Although they escape into the streets of Liverpool they are re-captured. The two calves are sad and dejected and break out during the loading of their group into the cattle trucks. They eventually find themselves on the Cornish Moors during the emergence of a bitter winter. They are rejected by the local moorland cattle. After many weeks of travel, injuries, hunger and bitter cold they realize their terrible mistake. Will the boys be rescued? What will become of the calves? The ever-popular Derbyshire-based author Hazel Helliwell has published a new romance, Meant to Meet, under her name and not her pen name Samantha Arran. She says, "Many readers of my autobiography 'Out of the Shadows' asked me to write more of the history of my formative years. 'Meant to Meet' is fictional, but the facts are real. For the sequence, the story begins in 1896 with a collier's family in North Derbyshire and draws you into the way they lived their lives, their joys, and the tragedies, and continues through their descendants until the present day. For some of my younger readers, it also will be an eye-opener, but others will find it nostalgic. It's been my biggest challenge, writing from my own experience, supported and developed with careful research.
