Metro Movies: Cinematic Urbanism in Post-Mao China takes readers on a comprehensive tour of the urbanization of Chinese cinema. But they are not the only chakras - there are also, for example, the minor chakras in the arms and the legs. Of particular interest are also the intermediate chakras between the main chakras, which limit their "lands" like borders with gates that can "pump" the life force from one chakra to another and play an important role in the formation and resolution of trauma. The chakras are the "organs" of the life force body. Just as the physical body has a blood circulation, the life force body also has a "life force circulation": the Kundalini, which flows in the three central "veins" of the Sushumna and Ida and Pingala. Furthermore, there is a special form of secondary chakras that transform the images in the chakras into "docking points" for the outside world: the kshetrams and the aura points. They correspond to the sense organs and the hands of the physical body. In order to be able to grasp this complex system, which is nevertheless constructed in a very simple and coherent way, in all its details and in its great elegance, this book compares the knowledge of the chakras of different peoples, the acupuncture points of Chinese Medicine, the Marma points from Indian Ayurveda and the Rang-Dröl points from Tibetan Medicine. Conversational and streaming video-based applications are becoming a major part of the everyday Internet usage. The quality of these applications (QoS), as experienced by the user, depends on three main metrics of the underlying network, namely, end-to-end delay, jitter and packet loss. These metrics are, in turn, directly related to the capacity of the links that the video traffic traverses from its source to destination. The main problem that this book addresses is how much bandwidth we should allocate on the path from source to destination of a video traffic flow such that the end-to-end delay, jitter and packet loss of the video packets are within some expected required bounds.

Food which nanotechnology has impacted or to which nanotechnology is applied is referred to as nanofood. From treatment of the soil in which a crop plant is grown to the caring of a food, nanotechnology is a growing factor in the food supply. At this point, however, there is no definitive, effective global method for regulating the use of nanotechnology as it relates to the food suply. Legislation on nanotechnologies is still evolving, as is understanding what data is needed for effective, efficient and appropriate risk assessment associated with nanotechnology impacted foods. Due to the emerging nature of nanotechnology and its role in the food supply, case-by-case studies are the current norm, but the need for wide-scale testing and broad-based regulatory standards is urgent. This volume is an account of scientific discovery related to the hepatitis E virus (HEV). HEV was first identified in Afghanistan in 1982 by a remarkably courageous act of self-experimentation by a Russian scientist. Following this, it was found that, in some developing countries in Asia and Africa, HEV was the cause of enormous outbreaks of hepatitis spread by infected drinking water, with a 25% death rate in pregnant women. For many years, HEV was thought not to be an issue in high-income countries and was only seen in travellers returning from high risk areas: it was considered a “back-packers’” disease. We now know that this was hopelessly wrong as HEV is very common in developed countries, with currently over 2 million infections per year in Europe. Here, HEV is found in pigs and spread mainly via consumption of contaminated pork meat. There has been a major increase in cases of HEV in many developed countries, including patients who have suffered liver failure, some of whom have died. We now know that HEV can also cause severe damage to the nervous system. This book describes an English doctor’s contribution to the discovery of the impact of HEV in humans. Recent cases in the UK appear to have originated from pigs in Continental Europe and HEV was, as a consequence, dubbed by the international press as the ‘Brexit Virus’; perhaps an early leaving present from our friends in the EU. Accessible to lay readers, the text includes case histories and stories from a health service increasingly under pressure and given context by examples of medical discoveries from the past. The role of the meat production industry, including questionable on-going high-risk virological practices, is put under the spotlight, leading to inevitable comparisons with the BSE crisis of the 1980s. HEV continues to exact a heavy toll in some low-income countries, most notably with multiple large outbreaks in African refugee camps. Despite the best efforts of organisations such as Médecins Sans Frontières, each year, pregnant women continue to die by the score. This is particularly poignant as these deaths may be avoidable, as there is a safe and effective vaccine. However, the HEV vaccine is only licensed for use in China, and, so far, efforts to introduce it to Africa have hit a brick wall of politics and red tape.
The book is designed to be a textbook for university students (MSc-PhD level) and a reference for researchers and practitioners. It is an introduction to dynamic modelling of forest growth based on ecological theory but aiming for practical applications for forest management under environmental change. It is largely based on the work and research findings of the authors, but it also covers a wide range of literature relevant to process-based forest modelling in general. The models presented in the book also serve as tools for research and can be elaborated further as new research findings emerge. The material in the book is arranged such that the student starts from basic concepts and formulations, then moves towards more advanced theories and methods, finally learning about parameter estimation, model testing, and practical application. Exercises with solutions and hands-on R-code are provided to help the student digest the concepts and become proficient with the methods. The book should be useful for both forest ecologists who want to become modellers, and for applied mathematicians who want to learn about forest ecology. The basic concepts and theory are formulated in the first four chapters, including a review of traditional descriptive forest models, basic concepts of carbon balance modelling applied to trees, and theories and models of tree and forest structure. Chapter 5 provides a synthesis in the form of a core model which is further elaborated and applied in the subsequent chapters. The more advanced theories and methods in Chapters 6 and 7 comprise aspects of competition through tree interactions, and eco-evolutionary modelling, including optimisation and game theory, a topical and fast developing area of ecological modelling under climate change. Chapters 8 and 9 are devoted to parameter estimation and model calibration, showing how empirical and process-based methods and related data sources can be bridged to provide reliable predictions. Chapter 10 demonstrates some practical applications and possible future development paths of the approach. The approach in this book is unique in that the models presented are based on ecological theory and research findings, yet sufficiently simple in structure to lend themselves readily to practical application, such as regional estimates of harvest potential, or satellite-based monitoring of growth. The applicability is also related to the objective of bridging empirical and process-based approaches through data assimilation methods that combine research-based ecological measurements with standard forestry data. Importantly, the ecological basis means that it is possible to build on the existing models to advance the approach as new research findings become available.

As part of a collaboration between two different groups in chemistry and biochemistry, Thom Sharp presents here his thesis work on the development of new methods for cryoelectron microscopy.
