The Well-Tempered Festschrift" is a reading of "Music Preferred: Essays in Musicology, Cultural History and Analysis in Honour of Harry White", edited by Lorraine Byrne Bodley and published by Hollitzer Verlag in 2018. "The Well-Tempered Festschrift" reflects on each of the essays in "Music Preferred" in turn, and it also accounts for the circumstances in which Harry White met the contributors to "Music Preferred" throughout the course of his working life. "The Well-Tempered Festschrift" is thus a musicological memoir as well as a detailed review of the contents of "Music Preferred", dedicated to the friends whose work is pictured within. It responds to the liber amicorum of "Music Preferred" with an answering echo that may well be unique in the annals of scholarly Festschriften.
This new reading of Irish literature identifies, for the first time, the formative influence of music in Irish writing over the past 200 years. Although this influence has long been acknowledged in studies of Shaw and Joyce, White explores music as an abiding preoccupation in the work of Moore, Yeats, Synge, Shaw, Joyce, Beckett, Friel, and Heaney.
The Musical Discourse of Servitude examines the music of Johann Joseph Fux (c.1660-1741) in relation to that of Johann Sebastian Bach and George Frideric Handel. Its principal argument is that Fux's long indenture as a composer of church music in Vienna gains in meaning (and cultural significance) when situated along an axis that runs between the liturgical servitude of writing music for the imperial court service and the autonomy of musical imagination which transpires in the late works of Bach and Handel. To this end, The Musical Discourse of Servitude constructs a typology of the late baroque musical imagination which draws Fux, Bach and Handel into the orbit of North Italian compositional practice"--

Based on interviews conducted by Cooper Thompson, Emmett Schaefer, and Harry Brod, these engaging oral histories tell the stories of the men’s antiracist work. While these men discuss their accomplishments with pride, they also talk about their mistakes and regrets, their shortcomings and strategic blunders. A foreword by James W. Loewen, author of Lies My Teacher Told Me, provides historical context, describing antiracist efforts undertaken by white men in America during past centuries. Ranging in age from twenty-six to eighty-six, the men whose stories are presented here include some of the elder statesmen of antiracism work as well as members of the newest generation of activists.
