The Trouble With Capitalism - originally written, with remarkable prescience, in 1998 - anticipates such a development and explains the underlying economic fragility it has revealed. Rather than being merely a temporary blip in the march of capitalism, Shutt argues forcefully that the on-going crisis has arisen as a result of fundamental economic problems, stemming from the growing redundancy of both labour and capital since the 1970s. In doing so, he exposes the sham of the laissez faire prospectus, showing that state power and capital are increasingly being used to prop up capital while pretending that the aim is to roll back the frontiers of the state. The implications of the author's startling conclusion (re-examined in a new foreword) - that the maximisation of profit must cease to be the main basis for allocating resources - are profound.
Since 2008, we have found ourselves confronted by an historic financial holocaust that world leaders have struggled to come to terms with. All have willfully ignored its long-term, systemic causes and are thus unable to chart a way to survival. As explained by Harry Shutt - who was almost alone in foreseeing such a disaster in the 1990s (in The Trouble with Capitalism) their continued denial stems from a vested interest in maintaining a capitalist profits system which is not only as destructive as it was in the 1930s but as outmoded as feudalism was in 1789. Thus it can now only be sustained by an increasing reliance to official misinformation, massive criminal fraud and the ever greater dependence of private corporations on state subsidy. This book makes clear why the desperate resort of Western governments to 'extraordinary measures' to try and avert economic collapse is bound to fail. It also forcefully demonstrates why our only hope of reversing the tide is to abandon the traditional economic logic of endlessly expanding production in favour of responding to the aspirations of ordinary people. Such a transformation, argues Shutt, would make possible the allocation of resources to more socially desirable ends, including the assurance of basic economic security for all as a right of citizenship.

Harry Freedman recounts the fascinating and bloody history of the Bible. In 1535, William Tyndale, the first man to produce an English version of the Bible in print, was captured and imprisoned in Belgium. A year later he was strangled and then burned at the stake. His co-translator was also burned. In that same year the translator of the first Dutch Bible was arrested and beheaded. These were not the first, nor were they the last instances of extreme violence against Bible translators. The Murderous History of Bible Translations tells the remarkable, and bloody, story of those who dared translate the word of God. The Bible has been translated far more than any other book. To our minds it is self-evident that believers can read their sacred literature in a language they understand. But the history of Bible translations is far more contentious than reason would suggest. Bible translations underlie an astonishing number of religious conflicts that have plagued the world. Harry Freedman, author of The Talmud: A Biography describes brilliantly the passions and strong emotions that arise when deeply held religious convictions are threatened or undermined. He tells of the struggle for authority and orthodoxy in a world where temporal power was always subjugated to the divine. A world in which the idea of a Bible for all was so important that many were willing to give up their time, their security and often their lives.
Sprung from a small pastoral colony on the banks of the Tiber, the Romans became the masters of the universe. They were a more earthy, indeed a more pragmatic and realistic people, than the Greeks. They absorbed Greece, and built their empire on the foundations of that conquered nation. What they contributed to the West is primarily the concept of colonial administration. They codified law. They built—aqueducts and forts, bridges and military highways, across Europe, from Hadrian’s Wall to the garrison town of Lambaesis in North Africa, from the Danube to the Asiatic frontiers. They subjugated most of the nations of Europe and Asia Minor, and after their military conquests they offered the Pax Romana. This treasury is an anthology, in English translation, of the most distinctive literary achievements of the Romans, in the fields of drama, philosophy, history, satire, oratory and analogous categories. The passages selected are of such a nature as to be complete in themselves or so self-contained as to be readily understandable. Some of the versions have long been standard renderings; in other instances, the editor has himself contributed a translation. In its totality, this chrestomathy should confirm the enduring impact made by Roman civilization, and furnish evidence of the heritage that they have bequeathed to us.
Causeway is almost entirely fictional but each story is based upon events actually experienced by Harry Stone, a much travelled islander himself and a self-confessed people-watcher. The story prompts may be people like Brogan or Shutty, places such as the dunes of Tray Bay or the ancient village of Solas, or events such as the great storm or the discovery of the chessmen. Whatever the stimulous for each story their development is sure to involve a mystical element; a reference to the 'island magic' which Harry is convinced exists in all the islands he has ever visited. Although each story stands alone, the threads of Causeway are slowly drawn together as the reader becomes aware of evolving interelationships in the narratives, and character links emerge with powerful, disturbing, but ultimately hopeful conclusions.
HighTide Theatre Festival was founded in 2006 and has since become one of the most prolific homes of new writing. The Big Meal by American writer Dan LeFranc is a deeply comic and touching drama that looks at love, marriage, raising children and the general onslaught of life. Lampedusa by Anders Lustgarten follows the day-to-day life of those whose job it is to enforce our harsh new rules on immigration: an Italian coastguard and a payday lender from Leeds. All now established in their own right, these four plays demonstrate HighTide's extraordinary role in identifying and nurturing writers tackling some of the biggest issues of today. The volume was published to coincide with HighTide's 10th annual festival in September 2016 and features an introduction by HighTide Artistic Director, Steven Atkinson.
