Written for neurologists and other physicians who participate in the diagnosis and treatment of brain tumors, this book synthesizes the authors' clinical experiences. The first seven chapters provide a foundation for tumor pathology, biology, radiology, and the treatment modalities of surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. The remaining eight chapters have a common format, reviewing the history, epidemiology, biology, pathology, clinical symptoms, differential diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and complications of specific tumors.
Death is the one subject about which our culture is still reticent. Consequently many ceremonies about death are not examined in an open, enquiring and direct way. The state funeral, that large, public, ritualized statement about death is accepted in our society, while its deeper significances remain unexamined because it is seen as something of an historical curiosity, a survival from an earlier age associated with the traditions of that society. This well-illustrated study of a number of state funerals - of the Medicis and the Habsburgs in the Renaissance, of the Duke of Albemarle in the seventeenth century, of the Duke of Wellington and Abraham Lincoln in the nineteenth century, and of President Kennedy and Diana, Princess of Wales in the twentieth century - and the mythical structures and traditions they represent, examines two aspects in particular: the strongly political undertones of the public statements, and the theatrical elements of the public ritual.
This selection of letters, essays, and speeches demonstrates how the clashing perspectives of two individuals shaped and exemplified the major issues of national politics between the War of 1812 and the territorial crisis of 1850 — the preservation of the union, federal commitments to banking, tariffs, internal improvements, and the egalitarian tone of national political culture.
Tells the story of United States beginning with the earliest Americans and the arrival of strangers on the eastern shore, then moving through colonial society to the fight for independence and the construction of a federal republic. From there, it explains the renegotiations and refinements that took place as a new nation found its footing, and it traces the actions that eventually rippled into the Civil War. This volume goes beyond famous names and battles to incorporate politics, economics, science, arts, and culture. And it shows that issues that resonate today--immigration, race, labor, gender roles, and the power of technology--have been part of the American fabric since the very beginning. --Adapted from publisher description.
