Demgegenüber scheinen Beiträge zu außenwirtschaftlichen Themen bei wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fachtagungen in den letzten Jahren eher an Bedeutung verloren zu haben. Angesichts dieses Widerspruches wurde im April 1999 der 1. Passauer Workshop "Internationale Wirtschaftsbeziehungen" an der Wirtschaftswissenschaftlichen Fakultät der Universität Passau ins Leben gerufen."Real and Monetary Issues of International Economic Integration" enthält zehn ausgesuchte Beiträge dieses Workshops, die sich in Teil I mit Außenhandel und Faktorbewegungen und in Teil II mit Fragestellungen internationaler Finanzen und der Makroökonomie offener Volkswirtschaften beschäftigen. A practical guide to using modern software effectively in quantitative research in the social and natural sciences. This book offers a practical guide to the computational methods at the heart of most modern quantitative research. It will be essential reading for research assistants needing hands-on experience; students entering PhD programs in business, economics, and other social or natural sciences; and those seeking quantitative jobs in industry. No background in computer science is assumed; a learner need only have a computer with access to the Internet. Using the example as its principal pedagogical device, the book offers tried-and-true prototypes that illustrate many important computational tasks required in quantitative research. The best way to use the book is to read it at the computer keyboard and learn by doing. The book begins by introducing basic skills: how to use the operating system, how to organize data, and how to complete simple programming tasks. For its demonstrations, the book uses a UNIX-based operating system and a set of free software tools: the scripting language Python for programming tasks; the database management system SQLite; and the freely available R for statistical computing and graphics. The book goes on to describe particular tasks: analyzing data, implementing commonly used numerical and simulation methods, and creating extensions to Python to reduce cycle time. Finally, the book describes the use of LaTeX, a document markup language and preparation system.

Women in the Two Germanies: A Comparative Study of a Socialist and a Non-Socialist Society is a comparative study of the status and position of women in socialist East Germany and non-socialist West Germany. Drawing on research carried out in 1977 and 1978, as well as interviews with hundreds, if not thousands, of individuals from all walks of life and from all parts of the two Germanies, this book considers a wide variety of legal, economic, political, and social aspects of life in the two countries, such as equality or the lack thereof under the law, in education, on the job, and in the home. This monograph is comprised of seven chapters and opens with a brief comparison of East and West Germany and a historical perspective on European men and women, as well as the status of German women before 1945 and after World War II. The discussion then turns to the status and rights of German women under the law, particularly the Constitution, labor law, family law, and social security legislation. The following chapters focus on the employment of women in the two German states; education and training; and in the home and family. Women's organizations, including religious women's organizations, professional women's organizations, and radical women's groups, are also considered. This text is written primarily for women and should also be of interest to historians, sociologists, social scientists, and policymakers concerned with women's rights.
Richmond in the late 19th century was not the genteel peaceful community historians have made it. Virginia's capital was cosmopolitan, boisterous and crime-ridden. From 1905 to 1915 there was an official red light district. The police had their hands full with drunks and riffraff, and a variety of street urchins and waifs--most of whom were very poor--found themselves on the wrong side of the law. The juvenile delinquents of Richmond--some barely out of infancy--were held accountable in the Police Court. A juvenile court system was not established until 1916. Presiding over the Police Court for 32 years was Justice John Jeter Crutchfield who, though unlearned in the law, functioned like a biblical Solomon but with great showmanship. The Police Court attracted many tourists and some of Virginia's literary figures cut their teeth writing newspaper coverage of the proceedings, vying with each other for the most hilarious slant. What emerges from the public record is an amusing and touching picture of what life was really like in the post-Reconstruction urban South.
