Public interest trial attorney Harry Lehmann is on the case of what could become the greatest gamble our planet has ever faced. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is housed in a tunnel 17 miles in circumference, more than 500 feet underground, at the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. It was built by CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, to collide opposing beams of protons at near light speed. LHC was shut down days after its September 2008 launch by a serious fault between two superconducting bending magnets. Now CERN claims it has repaired the original defects and resulting damage, so that it can "safely" fire up the LHC again. But this is the largest science experiment in our planet's history, and its "laboratory" is the planet itself. The stakes could not be higher. No Canary In The Quanta illuminates crucial questions that must be asked by the people of the world about what could be, if anything goes wrong, a true Doomsday machine.
Algorithmic and Aesthetic Literacy is a selection of texts aiming to extend current understandings of algorithmic and aesthetic literacy. The volume presents a wide array of transdisciplinary perspectives on computational and aesthetic practices and thinking. Drawing on computer and educational science, artistic research, designing and crafting, this collection delves deeply into societal and educational challenges in the wake of the digital transformation. The volume brings together diverse approaches and viewpoints to stimulate dialogue and awareness of the manifold ways in which algorithmic processes have become part of our lives. By extending our ability to respond to a data-driven world in creative and non-habitual ways, we will be better equipped to re-imagine and shape our collective future as meaningful and fulfilling.
States that the critical theory of the Frankfurt School is as important today, if not more so, as it was at its inception during the 1930s. This title looks at the distinguishing features of this tradition and how it is critical, yet also complementary, of other approaches in the social sciences, especially in sociology.
Places emphasis on developments in the social theory of environmental issues, the environment, and the environmental crisis. This also emphasises on the increasingly questionable possibility of shared knowledge at a time of increasing fragmentation of common frameworks, distraction from key issues, and dilution of the idea of objectivity.
The present study explores the possibility of using variant readings of the Targum of the Prophets to get a better insight into the origin and history of Targum Jonathan. The focus is on two sorts of variant readings: the Tosefta Targums and the targumic quotations in rabbinic and medieval Jewish literature. The chapter on the Tosefta Targums concentrates on variants from the book of Samuel. The chapter on the targumic quotations includes quotations of all the Prophets in early Jewish literature. In the Appendix a full list is given of all quotations of Targums of the Prophets presently known. The book is useful for the study of the genesis of Targum Jonathan as well as for its later developments.
