The popular adventure novelist William Lancaster was the son of a Royal Navy captain and wrote under the pseudonym of Harry Collingwood. He studied at Royal Naval College, Greenwich and distinguished himself by carrying off many prizes. He joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman at the age of fifteen, but due to severe near-sightedness, he was forced to abandon his chosen career. Instead, he became a civil engineer, specialising in harbour commissions. In his spare time, he turned to writing adventure yarns and historical novels, almost always with a nautical setting. His novels reveal his informed knowledge of the genre and an untiring ability to construct compelling and original adventure stories. For the first time in publishing history, this eBook presents Harry Collingwood’s complete works, with numerous illustrations, rare texts, informative introductions and the usual Delphi bonus material. Three men were still aloft when the battery, which had hoisted Spanish colors, opened fire upon us, the first shot severing our larboard main- topgallant back-stay. This damage, slight as it was, sufficed to effectually rouse Captain Pigot's hasty, irritable temper; and, hurrying the men down from aloft, he ordered the larboard broadside to be manned, and the guns to be directed upon the audacious battery. A couple of well-directed broadsides sufficed to silence its fire, and the boats were then immediately piped away. But that was not the last of it -- not by half. The rover had a secret - a terrible, "terrible" secret.
Buried Treasure!" They were tough times, those years, but there was a story in his family -- they'd been telling it for generations -- that centuries ago, an ancestor of Captain Saint Leger's had found a shipwreck laden with a huge hoard of gold and jewels. He'd buried it, so the story went, in a secret location on an island in the Far East. Young Captain Saint Leger -- broke as he is -- sets out to find the treasure. It's not as easy as it sounds: he gets attacked by pirates, and of course the voyage itself is long and fretful. . . . but they get there, puzzle out the directions his ancestor encrypted, find the treasure -- and then the crew turns on him, intending to steal the treasure! Days are a good English seaman just can't catch a break! But "The Cruise of the 'Esmeralda'" is a Harry Collingwood adventure, and you know all has to come out right end the end -- don't you? Gee, we sure hope so.
