Peter’s second letter is about growing in Christ amid false teaching so that Christ’s character will be reflected in our lives. Peter begins by explaining true knowledge of God. It is a saving, growing, fruitful, assured and remembered knowledge. The source of this true knowledge of God is Scripture. Scripture comes from God. Men spoke from God carried along by the Holy Spirit. Peter next contrasts false knowledge of God with true knowledge of God. There are false teachers among the churches Peter addresses, whose precursors are the false prophets of the Old Testament. Arrogance, sensuality, and emptiness characterize these false teachers. They not only deny the truth but also live immoral lives. False knowledge of God leads nowhere but to God’s condemnation and to eternal death. Peter finally writes of practical knowledge of God. He recalls the predictions of the prophets and the commandment of their Lord and Saviour through the apostles. Practical knowledge of God produces godly living, assures that God fulfils all his promises in Scripture, and confirms growth in grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. Writing to Christians facing trials and possible persecution, Peter begins his letter not with their problems but with the solution. Individually, as believers, they inherit a triune salvation where God chooses, Christ cleanses, and the Spirit consecrates. Corporately, brought from darkness to light, Christ as cornerstone both establishes and shapes them. Practically, amid adversity within society, in work, and at home, Christ’s death as atonement saves them; and his example motivates them. He is also their overseer and shepherd. Generally and potentially, suffering for righteousness’s sake means following Christ’s example of nonretaliation, setting him apart in their hearts as Lord and living for him at all times like this. Even in their fellowships, leaders and led must be diligent and humble like Christ, the chief shepherd. The Christian life is really all about Christ. This recalls Peter’s word to Jesus at Caesarea Philippi: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God” (Matt. 16:16). That is what First Peter is essentially about. Living for Christ in a suffering world involves believing in Christ’s atoning death and following Christ’s example, whatever the circumstances. That done, all is done.

Pauline Christianity sprang to life in a world of imperial imagery. In the streets and at the thoroughfares, in the market places and on its public buildings and monuments, and especially on its coins the Roman Empire's imperial iconographers displayed imagery that aimed to persuade the Empire's diverse and mostly illiterate inhabitants that Rome had a divinely appointed right to rule the world and to be honoured and celebrated for its dominion. Harry O. Maier places the later, often contested, letters and theology associated with Paul in the social and political context of the Roman Empire's visual culture of politics and persuasion to show how followers of the apostle visualized the reign of Christ in ways consistent with central themes of imperial iconography. They drew on the Empire's picture language to celebrate the dominion and victory of the divine Son, Jesus, to persuade their audiences to honour his dominion with praise and thanksgiving. Key to this imperial embrace were Colossians, Ephesians, and the Pastoral Epistles. Yet these letters remain neglected territory in consideration of engagement with and reflection of imperial political ideals and goals amongst Paul and his followers. This book fills a gap in scholarly work on Paul and Empire by taking up each contested letter in turn to investigate how several of its main themes reflect motifs found in imperial images.
Combining the theological methods of Juan Luis Segundo and James H. Cone, Harry Singleton sheds new light on the impact of race on the origin and development of theology in America. The year 2000 showed that terrorism continues to pose a clear and present danger to the international community. Terrorism is becoming a strategy that has a long history, but one that took on a particularly deadly caste beginning in the 21th century. The leaders of some of the most dangerous terrorist groups to emerge in the past decade have headquarters or major offices in Afghanistan, and their associates threaten stability in many real and potential trouble spots around the globe - from Indonesia to the Balkans, Central Asia to the Persian Gulf, Western China to Somalia, and Western Europe to South Asia. Terrorists attempt not only to sow panic but also to undermine confidence in the government and political leadership of their target country. Terrorism is therefore designed to have psychological effects that reach far beyond its impact on the immediate victims or object of an attack. Terrorists mean to frighten and thereby intimidate a wider audience, such as a rival ethnic or religious group, an entire country and its political leadership, or the international community as a whole. All terrorist acts involve violence or "equally important" the threat of violence. These violent acts are committed by nongovernmental groups or individuals that is, by those who are neither part of nor officially serving in the military forces, law enforcement agencies, intelligence services, or other governmental agencies of an established nation-state. Terrorism has occurred throughout history for a variety of reasons. It causes can be historical, cultural, political, social, psychological, economic, or religious, or any combination of these. Some countries have proven to be particularly susceptible to terrorism at certain times, as Italy and West Germany were during the 1970s. Terrorist violence escalated precipitously in those two countries for a decade before declining equally dramatically. Other countries, such as Canada and The Netherlands, have proven to be more resistant, and have experienced only a few isolated terrorist incidents. In general, democratic countries have provided more fertile ground for terrorism because of the open nature of their societies. In such societies citizens have fundamental rights, civil liberties are legally protected, and government control and constant surveillance of its citizens and their activities is absent. By the same token, repressive societies, in which the government closely monitors citizens and restricts their speech and movement, have often provided more difficult environments for terrorists. But even police states have not been immune to terrorism, despite limiting civil liberties and forbidding free speech and rights of assembly. Examples include Russia under tsarist rule and the Communist-ruled Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, as well as the People's Republic of China, Myanmar, and Laos. In their zeal to tell the true story of sixteenth-century radicalism, some sympathizers of the Anabaptist movement have portrayed the once maligned individuals and groups as innocent, pious people who suffered cruel persecution at the hands of the wicked state-churchmen. Their side of the story is thus often as one-sided as was the story of the enemies of Anabaptism. This book, written by a Mennonite scholar, seeks to understand the reasons for the clash between Luther and the radicals, a point often neglected when one or the other side is emphasized.
