The connections and irony are too close to ignore. The movie gives the world a curious twist on the roles of Batman and the Joker. It’s politically incorrect, and yet emotionally the Joker’s insanity becomes more endearing than Batman’s noble sacrifice. What is it? Why does this psychopath seem to have a sense of higher truths in his insanity? This is the role of the Joker or the Fool, a standard character in theatre, and a role consciously adopted by serious artists since the late 1800s. Just as Shakespeare’s Fool in King Lear used his riddles and puns and satire to reveal the truths the royal leaders of his world could not or refused to see, today’s artists are both revealing the darkness within the culture and offering a way out. Waiting for Godot has been proclaimed the greatest play of the twentieth century. But there are no great roles in it, no characters representing the equivalent of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Rather, the two main characters are closer to T. S. Eliot’s J. Alfred Prufrock, who says he cannot be a Hamlet, only, perhaps, Hamlet’s Fool. This book explores what has happened as Europe’s culture fragmented and the world lost its center. It explores a range of different arenas, from political and social and religious happenings to scientific and artistic expressions, in order to find the centers of the human condition and how the dark expressions of meaninglessness so commonly highlighted are more rites-of-passage than the final destination.

Most of the facts and events from the book are either based on the direct experiences of the author or the experiences of other soldiers from his battalion, then fighting a savage war against Kachin Independence Army, KIA, by the Chinese border, in the early seventies. Read this book. It will leave an unforgettable and sorrowful image of war-torn Burma in your mind .

Best known are the seven main chakras: Root Chakra, Hara, Solar Plexus, Heart Chakra, Throat Chakra, Third Eye and Crown Chakra. But they are not the only chakras - there are also, for example, the minor chakras in the arms and the legs. Of particular interest are also the intermediate chakras between the main chakras, which limit their "lands" like borders with gates that can "pump" the life force from one chakra to another and play an important role in the formation and resolution of trauma. The chakras are the "organs" of the life force body. Just as the physical body has a blood circulation, the life force body also has a "life force circulation": the Kundalini, which flows in the three central "veins" of the Sushumna and Ida and Pingala. Furthermore, there is a special form of secondary chakras that transform the images in the chakras into "docking points" for the outside world: the kshetrams and the aura points. They correspond to the sense organs and the hands of the physical body. In order to be able to grasp this complex system, which is nevertheless constructed in a very simple and coherent way, in all its details and in its great elegance, this book compares the knowledge of the chakras of different peoples, the acupuncture points of Chinese Medicine, the Marma points from Indian Ayurveda and the Rang-Dröl points from Tibetan Medicine. This book deals with the phenomenon of vowel harmony, a phonological process whereby all the vowels in a word are required to share a specific phonological property, such as front or back articulation. Vowel harmony occurs in the majority of languages of the world, though only in very few European languages, and has been a central concern in phonological theory for many years. In this volume, Harry van der Hulst puts forward a new theory of vowel harmony, which accounts for the patterns of and exceptions to this phenomenon in the widest range of languages ever considered. The book begins with an overview of the general causes of asymmetries in vowel harmony systems. The two following chapters provide a detailed account of a new theory of vowel harmony based on unary elements and licensing, which is embedded in a general dependency-based theory of phonological structure. In the remaining chapters, this theory is applied to a variety of vowel harmony phenomena from typologically diverse languages, including palatal harmony in languages such as Finnish and Hungarian, labial harmony in Turkic languages, and tongue root systems in Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan, and Tungusic languages. The volume provides a valuable overview of the diversity of vowel harmony in the languages of the world and is essential reading for phonologists of all theoretical persuasions.
