A contribution to old Augusta County and Rockingham County and their descendants of the family of Harrison and allied lines. Rev. Thomas Harrison (1619-1682), an intimate of the Cromwell family, served as chaplain of the Virginia colony during Gov. Berkeley's first term. He immigrated to Jamestown, Virginia from England in 1640 and, changing from anti-Puritan to Puritan, moved to Massachusetts and marrying Dorothy Symonds about 1648/1649. He then returned to England. Benjamin Harrison, his brother, then immigrated to become the founder of the Harrison family of the James River in Virginia. Other colonial Harrisons who immigrated are detailed, along with many of their descendants and relatives, particularly those who settled in Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island of New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. Descendants and relatives also lived in West Virginia, Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Texas, Florida, Kentucky, California and elsewhere. Soon after the failed Confederate assault on the third day at Gettysburg, General Robert E. Lee told General George E. Pickett that, despite the defeat, “the men and officers of your command have written the name of Virginia as high today as ever it has been written before.” Like Lee, Walter Harrison—inspector general for the division—admired the gallantry of the men with whom he served and sought to honor them. To that end he wrote this history of his division, the only book by a participant devoted to one of the more famous large units in the Army of Northern Virginia. He covers the fear of unbelief, the fear of hypocrisy, the fear of being acted only by a slavish spirit of fear, a sense of fearful backslidings, and a sense of one’s strong corruptions that hinder devotions. He speaks extensively of many negative thoughts that crowd the Christian when they try to have faithful devotions, such as desertion felt or feared by God (will God even hear me?), sudden uneasiness that one experiences from cloudy providences, how to deal with the dread of spiritual judgements, hardness of heart, and unprofitableness under the means of grace. Especially considered is the fear that one’s prayer is not heard. His work is unique in that he not only gives various remedies for hindrances, but also helps to devotion in the actual way the Christian ought to logically speak to God by using his word (spiritual logic) in setting their prayers on God’s prescriptions. This is an excellent work in showing, step by step, how the Christian can pray effectively using this spiritual logic, which is indeed, hints and helps to raise their personal devotions for the glory of the Redeemer. Charles W. Fornara's Herodotus: An Interpretative Essay (Oxford, 1971) was a landmark publication in the study of the great Greek historian. Well-known in particular for its main thesis that the Histories should be read against the background of the Atheno-Peloponnesian Wars during which it was written, its insight and penetrating discussion extend to a range of other issues, from the relative unity of Herodotus' work and the relationship between his ethnographies and historical narrative, to the themes and motifs that criss-cross the Histories-how 'history became moral and Herodotus didactic'. Interpreting Herodotus brings together a team of leading Herodotean scholars to look afresh at the themes of Fornara's seminal Essay in the light of the explosion of scholarship on the Histories in the intervening years, focusing particularly on how we can interpret Herodotus' work in terms of the context in which he wrote.
