These remain central questions for both established and emerging democracies. Studies in the Problem of Sovereignty (1917), Authority in the Modern State (1919), and The Foundations of Sovereignty (1921) are all works which expand Laski's pluralist doctrine of the State; a theory then applied in modified form in A Grammar of Politics (1925). Communism (1927) argues against the concept of a Western Communist revolution. Democracy in Crisis (1933) and the more optimistic Reflections on the Constitution (1951) result from the defeat of Labour in 1931 and the onset of the Slump, at which point Laski rejected pluralism in favour of Marxist theory. Reflections on the Revolution of Our Time (1949) predicts a "revolution by consent" arising from the common war-effort. Also included are An Introduction to Politics (1931), The Rise of European Liberalism (1936) Parliamentary Government in England (1938), The Danger of Being a Gentleman (1939), Programme for Victory (1941), The Strategy of Freedom (1942) and The Dilemma of Our Times (1952).

As in other fields, in computer science certain objects of study can be synthesized from different basic elements, in different ways, and with different resulting stabilities. In subfields such as artificial intelligence, computational logic, and programming languages various relational and functional ingredients and techniques have been tried for the synthesis of declarative programs. This text considers the notions of relations, as found in logic programming or in relational databases, and of functions, as found in functional programming or in equational languages. We study a declarative integration which is tight, because it takes place right at the level of these notions, and which is still practical, because it preserves the advantages of the widely used relational and functional languages PROLOG and LISP. The resulting relational and functional language, RELFUN, is used here for exemplifying all integration principles.

During the 1970s, Pentecostal seminarians who were fed a steady diet of the monographs by James D.G. Dunn and F. Dale Bruner were often co-opted by magisterial traditions. It was time for a new generation of Pentecostal scholars where Pentecostals could themselves address issues brought to the forefront of their movement. This volume became one of the first books of its kind to crest the new wave of an emerging Pentecostal scholarship. Contemporary Pentecostal pneumatology was often regarded as a historically contributed and artificial novelty from the modern period and scores of Pentecostals were persuaded to forsake their heritage. Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative sought to ask the question if there was canonical evidence for a Charismatic dimension in the Christian pilgrimage. An answer in the affirmative inspired a scan of Christian figures through the centuries who have embraced this theological reality. The book ends with a theological synthesis that suggests an openness to various ways the Charismatic Spirit becomes a manifest reality in the lives of believers. Since the release of Spirit Baptism: A Pentecostal Alternative in 1983, much significant work has been accomplished in this field by Pentecostal and non-Pentecostal scholars alike. Yet this original groundbreaking work remains relevant as researchers around the world face for the first time theological issues that go to the heart of Pentecostal identify.

The fascinating history of an old Connecticut town whose founding, prospering, early 19th century decline, and 20th century resurgence reflect the history of many, many New England villages. The story starts in 1713 when the nearby town of Windsor established a township in Tolland and granted land to Windsor citizens who so desired to settle the new township. These pioneer settlers had all the hearty, robust traits of character it required to face the hazards of an untouched wilderness. Taking first things first as they saw them they established institutions for public worship and a sound system for the maintenance of local government. As evidence of how well they did their job Tolland exists today enjoying its greatest growth and prosperity. But it was not that easy; for Tolland, like so many of her sister New England communities, suffered the economic rigors of the late 1700s and early 1800s. Indeed, starting about 1830 Tolland suffered a steady decline that lasted for 120 years as its agriculturally oriented families probed westward in search of better farm lands. Starting in 1950, as the influence of greater Hartford expanded, Tolland grew to 2950 in 1960 and to 8500 in 1970. Tolland: An Old Post Road Town tells the whole story of its institutions, its service to our country, and its people with absorbing biographical sketches and genealogical records of many of its prominent citizens.

While Carlo Collodi's internationally revered Pinocchio may not have been the single source of the modernist fascination with puppets and marionettes, the book's appearance on the threshold of the modernist movement heralded a new artistic interest in the making of human likenesses. And the puppets, marionettes, and other forms that figure so vividly and provocatively in modernist and avant-garde drama can, according to Harold Segel, be regarded as Pinocchio's progeny. Segel argues that the philosophical, social, and artistic proclivities of the modernist movement converged in the discovery of an exciting new relevance in the puppet and marionette. Previously viewed as entertainment for children and fairground audiences, puppets emerged as an integral component of the modernist vision. They became metaphors for human helplessness in the face of powerful forces -- from Eros and the supernatural to history, industrial society, and national myth. Dramatists used them to satirize the tyranny of bourgeois custom and convention, to deflate the arrogance of the powerful, and to breathe new life into a theater that had become tradition-bound and commercialized. Pinocchio's Progeny offers a broad overview of the uses of these figures in European drama from 1890 to 1935. It considers developments in France, Spain, Italy, Austria, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Poland and Czechoslovakia. In his introduction, Segel reviews the premodernist literary and dramatic treatment of the puppet and marionette from Cervantes' Don Quixote to the turn-of-the- century European cabaret.
