Hargrave provocatively realigns the - hitherto unvoiced - assumptions that underpin such practice and proposes that learning disabled artists have earned the right to full critical review.
A key challenge facing all educators working in practice-based subjects is the need to negotiate tensions between past and present and provide a training that prepares students for fast-changing conditions, while also conveying long-standing principles. This Element therefore investigates how effectively editing and publishing programmes prepare graduates for industry and how well these graduates translate this instruction to the workplace. Taking a global perspective to gauge the state of the discipline, the mixed-methods approach used for this Element comprised two online surveys for educators and graduates, three semi-structured interviews with industry practitioners (scholarly, education and trade) and ethnographic practice (author as educator and practitioner). Three key concepts also framed this Element's enquiry: being, learning and doing. The Element demonstrates how these transitioning but interdependent concepts have the potential to form a holistic practice-led pedagogy for students of editing and publishing programmes.
A prodigious letter writer, Hargrave saved drafts of his business and personal correspondence in letterbooks. He wrote to family and friends settled in Beauharnois County on the south shore of the St Lawrence and in the Tweed valley in Scotland, as well as to his future wife, Letitia Mactavish, and members of her fur-trading family in Argyllshire on Scotland's west coast. His letters document the experiences of a "lowland" Scottish family in North America, as well as happenings at the administrative centre of the Hudson's Bay Company fur trade. He expresses his views on religion, history, politics, and literature, describes his romantic attachments, and makes clear his attitudes towards the company's Native partners in the fur trade.
From its founding in 1906, the Louisiana State University Law School has offered its students a truly distinctive legal education. Integrated programs in Louisiana’s unique civil law, in Anglo-American common law and federal law, and in international and comparative law create a global law curriculum recognized for both its academic excellence and its outstanding teaching, research, and public service faculty. In LSU Law, alumnus and professor W. Lee Hargrave chronicles the first seventy years of this institution—from its opening classes to the death of its longtime dean, Paul M. Hebert, and its transformation into an autonomous Law Center. He reveals the faces and forces that have helped to create the special mystique surrounding the school and the significance attached to a law degree from LSU. After an initial discussion of the legal profession in Louisiana before the establishment of formal academic instruction, Hargrave maps the school’s growth and development. He charts the organizational difficulties of the early years, reputation building in the twenties, politically influenced extravagance in the thirties, wartime challenges in the forties, return to normalcy in the fifties, steady growth in the sixties, and overcrowding in the seventies. Throughout, he explores all aspects of the school—its administrators and faculty, student body, shifting admission requirements, curriculum, grading system debates, influence on Louisiana’s legal community and state government, and much more. He also describes how students lived and learned during each era and discusses the effects of outside people and events—including Huey P. Long, World War II, and the civil rights movement—on the school. Hargrave tells the history of the LSU Law School in the context of changes that occurred in legal education throughout the United States, making his work of interest to legal historians and the national law school community. Alumni will also appreciate this detailed study of what has become a Louisiana institution.
In 1929, after her mother dies giving birth to her Grace Scott is raised by her father and German grandfather, who run a violin business in Chicago. In their care, she develops a formidable intellect, but as a teenager she is somewhat overweight; an unfortunate combination for a woman in 1940s America. Believing that this will affect her chances of finding a husband, to provide her with a degree of autonomy, her father and grandfather turn her into an outstanding violin connoisseur. In spite of their efforts, determined to control her own destiny, Grace seduces an older English violin dealer. However, when the pair move to war ravaged London, her plan backfires. Using their daughter as leverage, her husband controls Grace's every move. In 1965, after years of oppression and exploitation, Grace, begins a torrid affair with her husband’s youngest employee. Things reach a crisis when Grace discovers that her father-in-law has been hoarding a collection of antique violins that were stolen by the Nazis. Horrified, Grace arranges for the instrument’s restitution. Returning to the United States alone, in Washington DC Grace becomes embroiled in women’s emancipation, equal rights and the anti-Vietnam war movement.
