The meeting was organized to cover the recent developments in the field of tryptophan research. Weare very honoured that so many speakers accepted our invitation to give plenary lectures which, with the other communications, demonstrated the high scientific value of the Meeting. The publications in this volume are subdivided into nine main chapters, and cover all the major aspects in immunology, neurobiology, psychiatry, pathology, clinics, metabolism, enzymology, pharmacology, toxicology, melatonin, exercise and analytical chemistry. Modal verbs in English communicate delicate shades of meaning, there being a large range of verbs both on the necessity side (must, have to, should, ought to, need, need to) and the possibility side (can, may, could, might, be able to). They therefore constitute excellent test ground to apply and compare different methodologies that can lay bare the factors that drive the speaker’s choice of modal verb. This book is not merely concerned with a purely grammatical description of the use of modal verbs, but aims at advancing our understanding of lexical and grammatical units in general and of linguistic methodologies to explore these. It thus involves a genuine effort to compare, assess and combine a variety of approaches. It complements the leading descriptive qualitative work on modal verbs by testing a diverse range of quantitative methods, while not ignoring qualitative issues pertaining to the semantics-pragmatics interface. Starting from a critical assessment of what constitutes the meaning of modal verbs, different types of empirical studies (usage-based, data-driven and experimental), drawing considerably on the same data sets, shows how method triangulation can contribute to an enhanced understanding. Due attention is also given to individual variation as well as the degree to which modals can predict L2 proficiency level.
This book explores the limits of our knowledge. The author shows how uncertainty and indefiniteness not only define the borders confining our understanding, but how they feed into the process of discovery and help to push back these borders. Starting with physics the author collects examples from economics, neurophysiology, history, ecology and philosophy. The first part shows how information helps to reduce indefiniteness. Understanding rests on our ability to find the right context, in which we localize a problem as a point in a network of connections. New elements must be combined with the old parts of the existing complex knowledge system, in order to profit maximally from the information. An attempt is made to quantify the value of information by its ability to reduce indefiniteness. The second part explains how to handle indefiniteness with methods from fuzzy logic, decision theory, hermeneutics and semiotics. It is not sufficient that the new element appears in an experiment, one also has to find a theoretical reason for its existence. Indefiniteness becomes an engine of science, which gives rise to new ideas.

Durch Anwendung morphophonologischer Analysemethoden konnten schliesslich im Rahmen dieser Arbeit auf der Basis eines umfassenden Korpus die Bildungsregeln herausgefunden, beschrieben und erklart werden. Ihnen liegt das Kontrastprinzip der Identitatsvermeidung zugrunde, d.h. die Bildung dieser emphatischen Adjektive beruht auf der Vorschaltung eines Morphems, das durch besondere Segmentierung - Reduplikation einer (Teil)Silbe, die durch kontrastreiches Zusatzmaterial aus der Menge der Laute {p, s, m, r} geschlossen wird - und durch eine fur das Turkische aussergewohnliche Akzentuierung - Betonung der ersten Silbe - jenen Signalcharakter erhalt, der der beabsichtigten Wirkung der Emphase Rechnung tragt. Zum ersten Mal wird hier "Kontrast" nicht nur qualitativ verstanden, sondern auf der Basis von Artikulationsort und art der Konsonanten auf quantitative Weise definiert und so objektiviert.Um zusatzliche Evidenz fur die gefundene Losung dieses alten turkischen Problems zu bekommen, wurden 1. samtliche Reduplikationsformen des Turkischen bestimmt, klassifiziert und zum Vergleich herangezogen, 2. umfangreiche Lautstatistiken erstellt, 3. zahlreiche synchrone und diachrone Untersuchungen angestellt und 4. ein Massentest mit turkischen Muttersprachlern zur Verifizierung der gefundenen Regeln durchgefuhrt.
