He founded the Vienna Circle and was the teacher of both Kurt Gödel and Karl Popper. His seminal contributions to functional analysis and general topology had a huge impact on the development of modern analysis. Hahn’s passionate interest in the foundations of mathematics, vividly described in Sir Karl Popper’s foreword (which became his last essay), had a decisive influence upon Gödel. Like Freud, Musil and Schönberg, Hahn became a pivotal figure in the feverish intellectual climate of Vienna between the two wars. Volume 1: The first volume of Hahn’s Collected Works contains his path-breaking contributions to functional analysis, the theory of curves, and ordered groups. These papers are commented on by Harro Heuser, Hans Sagan, and Laszlo Fuchs. Volume 2: The second volume deals with functional analysis, real analysis and hydrodynamics. The commentaries are written by Wilhelm Frank, Davis Preiss, and Alfred Kluwick. Volume 3: In the third volume, Hahn’s writings on harmonic analysis, measure and integration, complex analysis and philosophy are collected and commented on by Jean-Pierre Kahane, Heinz Bauer, Ludger Kaup, and Christian Thiel. This volume also contains excerpts of Hahn’s letters and accounts by his students and colleagues.
The role Hans Hahn played in the Vienna Circle has not always been sufficiently appreciated. It was important in several ways. In the ftrst place, Hahn belonged to the trio of the original planners of the Circle. As students at the University of Vienna and throughout the fIrst decade of this century, he and his friends, Philipp Frank and Otto Neurath, met more or less regularly to discuss philosophical questions. When Hahn accepted his fIrSt professorial position, at the University of Czernowitz in the north east of the Austrian empire, and the paths of the three friends parted, they decided to continue such informal discussions at some future time - perhaps in a somewhat larger group and with the cooperation of a philosopher from the university. Various events delayed the execution of the project. Drafted into the Austrian army during the first world war" Hahn was wounded on the Italian front. Toward the end of the war he accepted an offer from the University of Bonn extended in recognition of his remarkable 1 mathematical achievements. He remained in Bonn until the spring of 1921 when he returm:d to Vienna and a chair of mathe matics at his alma mater. There, in 1922, the Mach-Boltzmann professorship for the philosophy of the inductive sciences became vacant by the death of Adolf Stohr; and Hahn saw a chance to realize his and his friends' old plan.

Yet, the role of Liverpool within the British imperial system and the impact on the city of its colonial connections remain underplayed in recent writing on both Liverpool and the empire. However, 'inconvenient' this may prove, this specially-commissioned collection of essays demonstrates that the imperial dimension deserves more prevalence in both academic and popular representations of Liverpool's past. Indeed, if Liverpool does represent the 'World in One City' - the slogan for Liverpool's status as European Capital of Culture in 2008 - it could be argued that this is largely down to Merseyside's long-term interactions with the colonial world, and the legacies of that imperial history. In the context of Capital of Culture year and growing interest in the relationship between British provincial cities and the British empire, this book will find a wide audience amongst academics, students and history enthusiasts generally.

This book will take note of the 150th anniversary of part one of Keller's Seldwyla stories using the new critical edition of Die Leute von Seldwyla, published in 2000 by Walter Morgenthaler. Though intended for scholars of German literature, the study, containing twelve contributions by eleven authors, is interdisciplinary in nature and discusses the impact of German philosophy (Feuerbach, Vischer) on Keller's work as well as Keller's interest in economics, education and Swiss political life. About half the contributions focus on individual stories, in particular Kleider machen Leute, Die mißbrauchten Liebesbriefe and Das verlorene Lachen, while the remainder either comment on Keller's two prefaces to the Novellen or deal with overarching aspects such as Keller's realism and his narrative technique.

The subject of space-filling curves has fascinated mathematicians for over a century and has intrigued many generations of students of mathematics. Working in this area is like skating on the edge of reason. Unfortunately, no comprehensive treatment has ever been attempted other than the gallant effort by W. Sierpiriski in 1912. At that time, the subject was still in its infancy and the most interesting and perplexing results were still to come. Besides, Sierpiriski's paper was written in Polish and published in a journal that is not readily accessible (Sierpiriski [2]). Most of the early literature on the subject is in French, German, and Polish, providing an additional raison d'etre for a comprehensive treatment in English. While there was, understandably, some intensive research activity on this subject around the turn of the century, contributions have, nevertheless, continued up to the present and there is no end in sight, indicating that the subject is still very much alive. The recent interest in fractals has refocused interest on space filling curves, and the study of fractals has thrown some new light on this small but venerable part of mathematics. This monograph is neither a textbook nor an encyclopedic treatment of the subject nor a historical account, but it is a little of each. While it may lend structure to a seminar or pro-seminar, or be useful as a supplement in a course on topology or mathematical analysis, it is primarily intended for self-study by the aficionados of classical analysis.
