I got to know my grandfather Johann Vorndran in 1945 in the Hochtief barracks in Walldorf/Hesse when want and misery reigned everywhere in Germany. He didn’t tell much about his life in Turkey. Only occasionally did he speak Turkish with his wife Minna when he did not want us children to understand them. It was only later that I became interested in his life and that of our family. That so many documents had been preserved was a stroke of fortune. During my research, I benefited from the fact that I myself went to school in Istanbul for four years and later remained connected to Turkey both professionally and privately. The country and language are very familiar to me. Our grandfather and his family had twice left for Turkey to seek their fortune. When he “screwed” the Galata Bridge over the Golden Horn for the first time in 1911, he got to know Ottoman Constantinople. On his second move there in the autumn of 1924, he experienced the up-and-coming metropolis of Istanbul under Atatürk. During the construction of bridges in remote regions of Anatolia, he got to know the old Turkish culture. The world wars twice ended his stays in Turkey, which had become his home. When he returned to Germany, he was a German foreigner in his native country. As the work on the “Bridge Builder” progressed, I realized that the fates of his sons Hans and Willy, who were born in Constantinople, grew up there and spent substantial parts of their professional lives in Turkey, had to be included. And because life in Turkey had such a strong influence on us siblings in the third generation, a family history became inevitable. I have tried to place the life and circumstances of the family as described into a historical context in order to make them understandable for those of us who live today. It was important for me to recall the suffering and misery that National Socialism brought to countless people through its dictatorship and the criminal wars it conducted.

The effect of manmade activities is primarily local but can extend far away from the location of intervention. This underlines the importance of establishing coastal zone management plans covering large stretches of coastlines. In recent years, interest in Low Crested Structures (coastal defense structures with a low-crest) has been growing together with awareness of the sensitivity to environmental impacts produced by coastal defenses. The relation between wave climate, beach erosion, beach defence means, habitat changes and beach value, which clearly exists based on EC research results, suggests the necessity of an integrated approach when designing coastal protection schemes. In accordance with this need, the present design guidelines cover structure stability and construction problems, hydro and morphodynamic effects, environmental effects (colonisation of the structure and water quality), societal and economic impacts (recreational benefits, swimming safety, beach quality). Environmental Design Guidelines for Low Crested Coastal Structures is specifically dedicated to Low Crested Structures, and provides methodological tools both for the engineering design of structures and for the prediction of performance and environmental impacts of such structures. A briefing of current best practice for local and national planning authorities, statutory agencies and other stakeholders in the coastal zone is also covered. The future of the church does not look bright in North America and Europe. This is documented by many recent surveys. The church is riddled with scandals, be it sexual abuse or financial misappropriation. This led to a loss of trust which is very difficult to regain. We also live in an aging society in which younger people have been brought up with a consumer attitude which does not stop at the church doors. Moreover, we live in a secular society in which individualism runs contrary to the communal aspect of the church. While religiosity has not vanished, the Christian faith is perceived by many as an “old time religion” whose tenets have lost their luster. Yet we should not give up on the church too quickly. The church has something to offer which the world needs and which it cannot secure by itself. This uniqueness of the church shows in the pronouncement of law and gospel and in the sacraments. The church is also instrumental for our self-understanding by serving as guardian of the past, as the heart of the present, and as a reminder of a meaningful future. In conclusion some directions are given toward a viable church.

Op 1 Desember 1834 is hierdie stelsel, soos in die res van die Britse koloniale ryk, afgeskaf. Die afskaffing van slawerny het egter geen onmiddellike gelykstelling met die middelklas beteken nie - die gewese slawe moes tot 1 Desember 1838 steeds as 'ingeboekte vakleerlinge' (apprentices) in die diens van hul voormalige eienaars bly. Gedurende die vier jaar het daar min opleiding plaasgevind wat hulle werklik vir arbeid in die ope mark sou bekwaam. Ook na Desember 1838 het die Britse owerheid sy plig versaak om op daadwerklike wyse by te dra tot die opheffing en verbetering van die nagenoeg 36 000 individue se lewensomstandighede. Hierdie taak is deur verskillende sendinggenootskappe met beperkte finansiele bronne, verrig. Enkele slawe het wel die voorreg gehad om in daardie tyd skoolopleiding te ontvang. Dit was egter nie onderwys en geletterdheid wat aanvanklik tot ekonomiese vooruitgang gelei het nie, maar eerder die beoefening van ambagte soos messelary, smidswerk en wamakery.In Amsterdam tot Zeeland word die unieke genealogiese afkoms van die Stellenbosse slawe en die oorsprong van die bruin gemeenskap bestudeer. Die menings hierin opgeneem word gerugsteun deur die verwerking van oorspronklike dokumente uit die Kaapse Argief wat op die ingeslote kompakskyf gelees kan word.

Traditional text types (or genres) are complex linguistic, sociocultural and cognitive phenomena that can only be analysed in flexible interdisciplinary frameworks fusing structural and process-oriented approaches and combining quantitative description with qualitative interpretation and evaluation.The theoretical and methodological implications of the prototypical text type concept which is developed in this book are explored in an exhaustive case study of a representative (ie prototypical) genre: the wedding report, a conventional type of news report published in local English newspapers. The distinctive contextual and textual features situational context, text production processes, function, thematic structure, and form on the macro- and microlevel are analysed synchronically and diachronically. The linguistic findings are integrated into a comprehensive view of the interplay between the genre as a linguistic frame and its sociocultural context.The study puts special emphasis on addressing the methodological problems arising from the inherent fuzziness of traditional text types, and can thus serve as a detailed working model of genre analysis, designed to be adapted to the specific requirements of similar studies.
