The Mahdia was an important Islamic millenarian movement of the Nilotic Sudan in the last two decades of the nineteenth century. It contributed substantially to the emergence of the Sudan as a nation-state in the twentieth century. The Mahdi's family and heritage played a major political and cultural role in the Sudan, both before and after independence.This volume begins with introductory material on the Mahdia and a biographical sketch of the author of the Sra, followed by discussion of composition, acquisition, sources, and literary features of the account. The text itself presents a condensed paraphrase of the account while retaining the spirit of the original document. It pays special attention to preserving historical events. Appendixes include full transcriptions of the main source materials for the biography, two photographic reproductions of the handwriting of the original Arabic manuscripts, and an annotated list of the Mahdist proclamations and letters transcribed in the original Arabic text of the Sra.

Like its two predecessors in the "Collected Papers "series, this volume is based on the proceedings of an international colloquium held at Tel Aviv University. The colloquium was organized in March 1978 by the Shiloah Center in cooperation with the University's newly established Center for Strategic Studies. As the title and subtitle imply, special emphasis was laid on the images and perceptions that people of the Middle East and the United States have had of one another, and the way in which their relationship is viewed from within the area, from Washington and from other pertinent vantage points. The causes of the October War in Israel can be traced to the political, economic, and strategic processes that occurred in the Middle East between 1967 and 1973. The papers compiled in this book were presented in the aftermath of the October War at an international colloquium held at Tel Aviv University. The growth 'and power of Middle East oil-producing countries, changes in inter-Arab relations, domestic policies, foreign policies, and strategic changes in the Middle East arena are analyzed and evaluated by American and Israeli scholars. American foreign policy, Soviet military doctrine, and Arab war aims are dealt with as well. The introduction which summarizes the discussion reflects the perspective of December 1974 from which the events of the years 1967-1973 were seen and evaluated.
