Supplementary readings to Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader—a must for every student of Chinese This book presents selected historical texts and annotations to instruct, inform, and inspire students of Chinese. Taken from the works known as the Four Histories, these texts offer insights into the political, social, economic, and cultural aspects of China over a long period of time. The comprehensive annotations provide full pronunciation in pinyin, the grammatical function of individual words, and a full explication of the texts. One of the supplementary readings to Classical Chinese: A Basic Reader, this volume includes eight selections from the Shi Ji and two each from the Han Shu, the Hou Han Shu, and the San Guo Zhi. Each unfolds a fascinating account of the historical events and figures that represent certain salient values or distinctive cultural characteristics of what has come to be the Chinese tradition. The Shi Ji, a grand history by Sima Qian chronicling three thousand years of Chinese history, is divided into five sections of 130 chapters. Sima Qian is especially noted for his biographical style, and his work is considered the first and only "universal history" of China. The Han Shu, by Ban Gu, recounts the history of a single dynasty and is known for its dynastic style in depicting history. Together, these two histories represent paradigms of Chinese historiography. The Hou Han Shu, by Fan Ye, and the San Guo Zhi, by Chen Shou, continue this tradition of excellence. These four works are known collectively as the Four Histories. All texts are fully annotated to include a pinyin version marking the pronunciation of each word, glosses of each word by grammatical function and its meaning in the text, as well as detailed explication of each word. The exercises at the end of each selection are intended to help students apply newly gained knowledge, better appreciate Chinese history, and stimulate interest in additional reading.
This book provides a broad introduction to all major aspects of quantum dot properties including fluorescence, electrochemical, photochemical and electroluminescence. Such properties have been produced for applications in biosensing, cell tracking, in vivo animal imaging and so on. It focuses on their special applications in DNA biosensing and provides readers with detailed information on the preparation and functionalization of quantum dots and the fabrication of DNA biosensors, using examples to show how these properties can be used in DNA biosensor design and the advantages of quantum dots in DNA biosensing. Further new emerging quantum dots such as metal nanoclusters and graphene dots and their applications in DNA biosensing have also been included.

This is a love story of a pseudo-loli crossing time and space to save the broken world. As a demon, Tang Xiaotang's mission was to travel between different worlds in order to maintain order in her world. At the same time, he would receive a portion of the quest's objective, emotion, as reward. And so, there was: the underworld Family Head with his little wild cat, Gui Wang with his mask, the daughter of the domineering CEO's little lovely wife ... This is a place managed by a martial arts sect. The author tries his best to lead you into a different martial arts world. The two brothers were young and had stepped into the martial arts world. With curiosity, with passion, with chivalry, with the warmth of the world, should I keep my heart or become a devil? Because of his father, he couldn't use any peerless martial arts, so how could he let any random master be chased and beaten until he couldn't hold it in? Civilians could not practice martial arts in this martial arts world. There seemed to be iron-like rules here, so who was trying to break them? This martial arts world had a long history of grudges against its powerful enemies. It was full of twists and turns, and hard to fathom people's hearts. There was never a lack of chivalrous men in the martial arts world. The winds and the rain in the martial arts world rose and fell together, just like the brothers collecting the rain and wind. Their names shook the martial arts world! Close]
This book shows that Hong Kong’s protests from June to December 2019 originated from not only an attempt to extradite a Hong Kong man involved in a Taiwan murder case, but also China’s effort at extraditing corrupt mainlanders who laundered dirty money in the territory. The mixture of peaceful and violent protests was due to the snowballing effect of protestors-police confrontations, the imbalanced way in which police exercised their power, and protestors’ strategies. The protests triggered the national security concerns of Beijing, which mobilized the People’s Armed Police to Shenzhen as a warning rather than sending them openly to Hong Kong to avoid undermining the image of “one country, two systems.” The entire debate raised the concerns of Washington, Taiwan, and foreign governments, heightening Beijing’s sensitivity. After the bill was withdrawn, the anti-extradition movement has become anti-police and anti-mainland, constantly challenging the legitimacy of the Hong Kong government and Beijing. This is a valuable read for China watchers, political scientists and all those interested in the future of East Asia.
This book examines the period leading up to the Hong Kong handover in 1997 - the 'countdown of time', and by using iconic cultural symbols such as the countdown clock, the Hong Kong Museum exhibitions and cultural heritage sites, argues that China has undergone a transition to neoliberal state, in part through its reunification with Hong Kong. The problem of synchronization with the world, a Chinese phrase that epitomizes China's engagement with modern capitalism since the first Opium War, was characterized throughout the 20th century as a 'humiliation', 'weakness', 'tragedy' and 'disaster', with China in the role of the victim of capitalist globalization. During the reunification with Hong Kong, these conventional expressions were replaced by new ones such as 'de-humiliation', 'return', 'self-esteem' and 'revival'. Hai Ren gives an ethnographic and historical analysis of this cultural and political transformation of China's globalization experience by looking closely at public history practices in mainland China and Hong Kong and how the reconfiguration of everyday life and cultural norms led to the development of this neoliberal China. As a book which straddles Chinese and Hong Kong, history, politics, cultural heritage and museum studies more generally, it can be regarded as a work of cultural political economy which will appeal to students and scholars of all of the above.

This book presents the current research on safety message dissemination in vehicular networks, covering medium access control and relay selection for multi-hop safety message broadcast. Along with an overall overview of the architecture, characteristics, and applications of vehicular networks, the authors discuss the challenging issues in the research on performance improvement for safety applications, and provide a comprehensive review of the research literature.A cross layer broadcast protocol is included to support efficient safety message broadcast by jointly considering geographical location, physical-layer channel condition, and moving velocity of vehicles in the highway scenario. To further support multi-hop safety message broadcast in a complex road layout, the authors propose an urban multi-hop broadcast protocol that utilizes a novel forwarding node selection scheme. Additionally, a busy tone based medium access control scheme is designed to provide strict priority to safety applications in vehicle-to-infrastructure communications. This book offers useful insights into protocol design and inspires a new line of thinking in performance improvements for safety applications in vehicular networks. It is a valuable resource for professionals, researchers, or advanced-level students working in vehicular networks or quality of service.

The energy consumption of a building has, in recent years, become a determining factor during its design and construction. With carbon footprints being a growing issue, it is important that buildings be optimized for energy conservation and CO2 reduction. This book therefore presents AI models and optimization techniques related to this application. The authors start with a review of recent models for the prediction of building energy consumption: engineering methods, statistical methods, artificial intelligence methods, ANNs and SVMs in particular. The book then focuses on SVMs, by first applying them to building energy consumption, then presenting the principles and various extensions, and SVR. The authors then move on to RDP, which they use to determine building energy faults through simulation experiments before presenting SVR model reduction methods and the benefits of parallel computing. The book then closes by presenting some of the current research and advancements in the field.
Using steel and concrete together utilizes the beneficial material properties of both elements. Concrete filled steel tubes represent a good example of a concrete - steel composite structure, and are particularly useful as columns in high rise buildings and bridge piers. They can be used in a range of fields, from civil and industrial construction
