America's Hundred Thousand covers in detail the eleven U.S. fighter aircraft types produced just before and during World War II - with a combined production total of just over 100,000 aircraft. Covered are the Army Lockheed P-38 Lightning, P-39 Airacobra, Curtiss P-40 Tomahawk/Kittyhawk/Warhawk, P-47 Thunderbolt, North American P-51 Mustang, Northrop P-61 Black Widow, and the Navy F2A - Buffalo, F4F - Wildcat, F4U - Corsair, and F6F - Hellcat fighters. The text is supplemented by more than 650 photographs, and 200 tables and graphs. Fighter production figures are also included. After an introduction of each type, a heavily illustrated overview of earlier inter-war production from 1920-on, along with a discussion and illustration of wartime experimental types, is provided. A lengthy section considering several technical factors affecting fighter performance follows. These include engine models, supercharger types, propellers, aerodynamic thrust, lift and drag, aircraft weight, balance, stability and control, and armament. America's Hundred Thousand also provides details of each U.S. World War II production fighter in terms of models and changes, numbers produced, and major engine and aircraft performance aspects - in tabular and graphical form - details of weights, discussion of handling qualities and general comments, along with detailed descriptions containing many illustrations of aircraft structures and systems showing the technology of that time. In addition a comprehensive week-to-week and month-to-month chronology of development and wartime combat operational life for each fighter is provided, including many photos. This study concludes with comparisons of the eleven types in terms of program milestones, aircraft drag, power available at various altitudes, speed, climb, rolling and turning, acceleration, and diving performance, as well as general evaluations by World War II pilots.
This textbook offers students with a basic understanding of group theory a preview of several interesting groups they would not typically encounter until later in their academic careers. By presenting these advanced concepts at this stage, they will gain a deeper understanding of the subject and be motivated to explore more of it. Groups covered include Thompson’s groups, self-similar groups, Lamplighter groups, and Baumslag-Solitar groups. Each chapter focuses on one of these groups, and begins by discussing why they are interesting, how they originated, and why they are important mathematically. A collection of specific references for additional reading, topics for further research, and exercises are included at the end of every chapter to encourage students’ continued education. With its accessible presentation and engaging style, A Sampling of Remarkable Groups is suitable for students in upper-level undergraduate or beginning graduate abstract algebra courses. It will also be of interest to researchers in mathematics, computer science, and related fields.
UNDERGROUND At the turn of the century, the city of Louisville was growing. There were gangs of young men in the out-lying villages, villages that were being swallowed up as the city expanded around them. Robert O’Brien had his own gang, and his fortune and influence were expanding at an alarming rate. Having learned to steal at a young age, he practiced his craft in the Portland area, where he grew up. He and his friends had been moving ever closer to the center of the city, until he was buying buildings and property in the most sought after sections. Their ill-gotten profits were being used to buy their way into Louisville society. Robert’s inside information was now used to rob the richest citizens, while they wined and dined the mastermind in their homes and social clubs. Making a fortune in this manner was slow and risky, especially when he insisted on moving the stolen merchandise across the river, out of the area, to sell. What Robert and his cousin found under the city turned his gang of thieves into legends, and ghosts. He amassed a fortune that rivaled any in Louisville. How he did it and what happened to his discovery has always been a question in the minds of the authorities. Now, the legend is being revealed.

Dean Garrett draw from numerous sources to bring to life the history and doctrine of the Doctrine and Covenants in an easy-to-read format. Using original diaries, journals, maps, and atlases, they set a historical context that helps clarify what is being said in the scriptures. Understand latter-day scripture in a whole new light!
Lectures on Finitely Generated Solvable Groups are based on the “Topics in Group Theory" course focused on finitely generated solvable groups that was given by Gilbert G. Baumslag at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York. While knowledge about finitely generated nilpotent groups is extensive, much less is known about the more general class of solvable groups containing them. The study of finitely generated solvable groups involves many different threads; therefore these notes contain discussions on HNN extensions; amalgamated and wreath products; and other concepts from combinatorial group theory as well as commutative algebra. Along with Baumslag’s Embedding Theorem for Finitely Generated Metabelian Groups, two theorems of Bieri and Strebel are presented to provide a solid foundation for understanding the fascinating class of finitely generated solvable groups. Examples are also supplied, which help illuminate many of the key concepts contained in the notes. Requiring only a modest initial group theory background from graduate and post-graduate students, these notes provide a field guide to the class of finitely generated solvable groups from a combinatorial group theory perspective.

Soon after he meets Toni Vaughn, an emotionally scarred young woman, he is reluctantly coerced out of reclusion to conduct a copyright case about a potentially plagiarized book. After recruiting Toni as his assistant, Alan leaves no stone unturned while attempting to prove his theory that the alleged source of the plagiaristic book is fraudulent and that the defence of the case is shrouded in a dangerous web of lies and deceit. As their work draws Alan and Toni closer together, everythingincluding their relationshipbecomes linked to the outcome of the challenging case. In this dramatic story of treachery, betrayal, love, and an obsession to succeed, a lawyer takes on a complex and bizarre copyright case while in a state of severe personal turmoil.
In the mid-1980s a young woman is found strangled in a wooded area north of the town of Graham, Colorado. A young man, near death from a drug overdose, is found nearby. The implications are obvious to the members of the community. As Sheriff Emmett Taylor begins his investigation, conflicting evidence raises the questions in his mind. The autopsy reveals the young woman had sex sometime during the evening of the murder, but apparently was not raped. The young man, the town's bad boy, was carrying a lethal dose of heroin, a drug not readily available in the farm community, in his veins. Despite the interference of Marta Sanchez, the assistant district attorney, the mayor of Graham, and various city officials, Sheriff Taylor is determined to conduct the investigation in his own manner. To complicate matters further, Nathan Crowley, a suspected killer of six young women that Taylor sent to jail four years ago has been released. And he is coming back. And he is looking for revenge. Sheriff Taylor realized in the final resolution, he will either come out on top, or end up dead.
Modern education, conceived in the late 18th century and expanded in the early 19th century to promote enlightenment and social equality, may finally be nearing its institutional limit. Over the past decade, following nearly a century of steady gains, there has been little further advancement in modern education. The modern system has proved effective in serving the interests of the established core of contemporary society, but ineffective in reaching for the periphery. The contributors to this volume offer various corrective approaches to correct this state of affairs.
At a time when the gap between rich and poor has been increasing, Poverty, Riches and Social Citizenship provides an accessible introduction to current debates about inequality, exclusion and the nature of citizenship, while also presenting an innovative exploration of popular beliefs and values in Britain. The authors develop a series of conceptual models by which to understand the competing traditions which have informed ideas about citizenship, and the contradictory moral notions that currently inform popular expectations of the welfare state.
A detailed pictorial review of U.S. Navy airplanes from the end of World War I to the present day. All mission types are covered, including fighters, scout dive and torpedo bombers, patrol planes, utility planes, and trainers. Many variants of basic types are shown with photos and data from informative captions. An introduction is provided for each mission category, and explanations of airplane designations are provided. Striking changes in U.S. naval airplane designs through almost eight decades of progress can be seen from the earliest wood, wire, and fabric craft to the latest types entering the naval inventory. The photo coverage is excellent, with many never before published pictures of Navy types.
This book is a lavishly illustrated story of Curtiss Wright Corporation's 1950s and 1960s efforts in developing a vertical takeoff (VTOL) aircraft. The author, an insider who headed preliminary design work, gives a brief history of Curtiss Wright, and of the Curtiss Propeller Division that spawned the program, then follows with the development details of the X-100 concept demonstrator and the follow-on X-19 military aircraft. Photos and detailed design descriptions are provided, as well as test flights and test pilot's reports, and finally, never before seen advanced military and civil VTOL aircraft concepts studies.
This book provides a pictorial overview of the progress of American military airplane design from approximately the end of World War I to the present time. It covers all types including attack, pursuit or fighter, cargo, trainer, and other models via a series of type sections. There are introductions to each section followed by photographic coverage along with extensive photo captioning providing highlights of characteristics and service use. Thus over three quarters of a century of Army and Air Force airplanes are displayed. Primary sections include production airplanes and variants, and a following photo gallery section covers experimental models. A few important export military types are also included. The illustrations and text portray in quite dramatic fashion the advances in U.S. military plane design over the period, including progress from "stick and wire" craft to the latest sleek turbine powered types.
