With the expanding aging population in both the United States and worldwide, health issues associated with aging are major personal and public health concerns. Although cardiovascular diseases, cancers, strokes, dementia, pulmonary disease, and diabetes mellitus are listed as major causes of death in older adults, in many instances the final cause of demise is complications associated with infections. Dr. Jump and Dr. Canady have assembled top authors to present the current clinical knowledge on the following topics: Urinary Tract Infections; Clostrdium difficile; Wounds/SSTI; Influenza; Other Respiratory Viruses; HIV; Antimicrobial Stewardship for Older Adults; Antibiotics at the End of Life; Sepsis in Older Adults; Antimicrobial Therapy in Older Adults; Norovirus/Viral outbreaks; and Bone and Joint Infections. Readers should have a solid understanding of the current clinical information needed to effectively manage infections in older adults.
A sociorhetorical analysis of First Corinthians Robert H. von Thaden Jr.'s sociorhetorical analysis examines Paul's construction of sexual Christian bodies in First Corinthians by utilizing new insights from conceptual integration (blending) theory about the embodied processes of meaning making. Paul's teaching about proper sexual behavior in this letter is best viewed as an example of early Christian wisdom discourse. This discourse draws upon apocalyptic and priestly cognitive frames to increase the rhetorical force of the argument. Reading Paul's argument through the lens of rhetorical invention, von Thaden demonstrates that Paul first attempts to show the Corinthians why sexual immorality is the worst of all bodily sins before shifting rhetorical focus to explain to them how they can best avoid this infraction against the body of Christ. Features: A programmatic application of conceptual integration theory using a sociorhetorical mode of interpretation A vivid account of key aspects of conceptual integration theory and how they function in sociorhetorical interpretation A detailed application of these strategies to interpret 1 Corinthians 1-4; 6:12-7:7
This book is a collection of lecture notes for the CIME course on "Multiscale and Adaptivity: Modeling, Numerics and Applications," held in Cetraro (Italy), in July 2009. Complex systems arise in several physical, chemical, and biological processes, in which length and time scales may span several orders of magnitude. Traditionally, scientists have focused on methods that are particularly applicable in only one regime, and knowledge of the system on one scale has been transferred to another scale only indirectly. Even with modern computer power, the complexity of such systems precludes their being treated directly with traditional tools, and new mathematical and computational instruments have had to be developed to tackle such problems. The outstanding and internationally renowned lecturers, coming from different areas of Applied Mathematics, have themselves contributed in an essential way to the development of the theory and techniques that constituted the subjects of the courses.
As everybody knows, abbreviations and acronyms are short forms of a word or phrase, chiefly in writing, to represent the complete form. An abbreviation is pronounced one letter at a time. An acronym is a set of letters that can be pronounce as a single word as a brief form of a corporate name or term made up of a group of letters that are commonly written/or spoken as a word. It may consist of the initial letters of the full name the text. In Turkish, the word kisaltma is used for both. The idea for a reference book of abbreviations and acronyms came to me when I worked as a cataloger/librarian in American academic libraries such as: Butler Library at Columbia University, New York; Research Library in UCLA, California; Doe Library at UCB, California; and Firestone Library at Princeton University, New Jersey. Inquiries about the Turkish abbreviations made by readers and students in Turkish studies and researchers and people interested in life in Turkey and the Turkish language and literature at all levels, have led me to address this need. They were all looking for the right definition to the abbreviations they came across in their Turkish source material. I made a list of them, whenever I found them in Turkish books, periodicals, and mostly newspapers, where I discovered new ones daily. My book, A Guide to Turkish Abbreviations and Acronyms, is intended as a descriptive, updated work. I compiled them exactly as they appeared in the original Turkish texts only, and none of them are conversational. I would like to emphasize that this book does not attempt to establish any rules or dictate any single correct style for Turkish usage of abbreviations and acronyms. Users will find old and new terms as well as many odd, obsolete, and slang words, but its my responsibility to put every item I found in my research into the book. The abbreviations and acronyms in this book are reproduced exactly as they were seen in the original text, including the same spelling, case, and punctuation. Finally, the entries in this work are arranged in Turkish alphabetical order irrespective of spacing, punctuation, or capitalization, and alphanumeric sequences are listed in the alphabetical order of their respective letters in the following order: A, B, C, , D, E, F, G, G, H, I, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, , P, R, S, S, T, U, , V, Y, Z.
Development in Infancy reflects many new discoveries that have transformed our understanding of infants and their place in human development, with an emphasis on 21st century research. Organized topically, the book covers physical, perceptual, cognitive, language, emotional, and social development, in addition to describing theories of development, contexts of development, research methods, and implications of research in infancy for social policies and interventions. Key issues in infancy studies—those having to do with how nature and nurture transact and with interrelations among diverse domains of development—are woven throughout the book. The text also emphasizes infancy as a unique stage of the life cycle. The new edition features new key point summaries at the end of most sections, definitions of boldfaced terms in the margins, and invitations to engage in retrieval practice at the end of each chapter. Each chapter also features Set for Life? text boxes that explore events and developments in infancy that reverberate in later development. This edition also features a new full-color design and over 100 figures, tables, and photos. The text is written in a clear and engaging style and is approachable for students with varying academic backgrounds and experiences. Development in Infancy is the authoritative text for undergraduate and graduate courses on infant development or early child development taught in departments of psychology, child development, education, nursing, and social work. The text is supported by Support Material that features a robust set of instructor and student resources.
Cases in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases challenges students to develop a working knowledge of the variety of microorganisms that cause infections in humans. This valuable, interactive text will help them better understand the clinical importance of the basic science concepts presented in medical microbiology or infectious disease courses. The cases are presented as "unknowns" and represent actual case presentations of patients the authors have encountered. Each case is accompanied by several questions to test knowledge in four broad areas including the organism's characteristics and laboratory diagnosis; pathogenesis and clinical characteristics of the infection; epidemiology; and prevention and, in some cases, drug resistance and treatment. This new fourth edition includes: an entirely new section, "Advanced Cases," which includes newly recognized disease agents as well as highly complex cases where the interaction of the immune system and human pathogens can be more closely examined a revised "Primer on the Laboratory Diagnosis of Infectious Diseases" section that reflects the increasing importance of molecular-based assays Forty-two new cases that explore the myriad advances in the study of infectious disease in the past decade Thirty-two updated cases that reflect the current state of the art as it relates to the organism causing the infection This textbook also include specific tools to assist students in solving the cases, including a table of normal values, glossary of medical terms, and figures illustrating microscopic organism morphology, laboratory tests, and clinical symptoms. Cases in Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases is a proven resource for preparing for Part I of the National Board of Medical Examiners Exam and an excellent reference for infectious disease rotations.
This book presents a systematic approach to a solution theory for linear partial differential equations developed in a Hilbert space setting based on a Sobolev Lattice structure, a simple extension of the well established notion of a chain (or scale) of Hilbert spaces. The focus on a Hilbert space (rather than an apparently more general Banach space) setting is not a severe constraint, but rather a highly adaptable and suitable approach providing a more transparent framework for presenting the main issues in the development of a solution theory for partial differential equations. In contrast to other texts on partial differential equations which consider either specific types of partial differential equations or apply a collection of tools for solving a variety of partial differential equations, this book takes a more global point of view by focussing on the issues involved in determining the appropriate functional analytic setting in which a solution theory can naturally be developed. Applications to many areas of mathematical physics are presented. The book aims to be a largely self-contained. Full proofs to all but the most straightforward results are provided, keeping to a minimum references to other literature for essential material. It is therefore highly suitable as a resource for graduate courses and for researchers, who will find new results for particular evolutionary system from mathematical physics.

Mustafa Ali was the foremost historian of the sixteenth-century Ottoman Empire. Most modern scholars of the Ottoman period have focused on economic and institutional issues, but this study uses Ali and his works as the basis for analyzing the nature of intellectual and social life in a formative period of the Ottoman Empire. Originally published in 1986. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905.
Examining the Soviet Union’s response to crimes with the use of enforced security, Peter Juviler provides insight on trends in criminal actions and common legal responses to them in Soviet Russia. Revolutionary Law and Order looks at how policy has been made by the Soviet Union, as well as the social and political changes that came to Russia and the successes and failures that came with the Soviet’s efforts to eliminate crime. Through Peter Juviler’s evaluation of Russia’s quest for law and order in the sense of security against crimes, readers will find numerous examples of the effective enforcement from the tsarist reforms to elaborate efforts of preventing and fighting cybercrimes.
This issue of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics in North America will focus on the advances in the evaluation and management of Recurrent Pregnancy Loss (RPL) that have emerged within the last few years. Although spontaneous pregnancy loss occurs in approximately 15% to 20% of clinically recognized pregnancies in reproductive-aged women, RPL occurs in 2% to 5% of the same population. Recent reports on large populations of women with RPL have helped to characterize the incidence and diversity of this heterogeneous disorder, and a definite cause of pregnancy loss can be established on over 50% of all couples after a thorough evaluation. New diagnostic strategies, which include 23-chromosome microarray genetic testing of the products of conception in failed pregnancies, offer the promise of understanding the cause of most pregnancy losses. These recent advances, combined with the contributions from the authors in this issue of Clinics and many others interested in this field, lead to the publication of the long-awaited publication on evaluation and treatment of RPL from the Practice Committee of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. A complete evaluation will include investigations into genetic, anatomic, immunologic, endocrinologic, and iatrogenic factors.
New Strategies Targeting Cancer Metabolism: Anticancer Drugs, Synthetic Analogues and Antitumor Agents presents up-to-date synthetic strategies for three categories of antimetabolites: antifolates, purines and pyrimidines, the main classes of antimetabolites which are integrated into various pharmaceutical agents. Many of these antimetabolites are considered potent chemotherapeutic agents which have great potential impact on medical research. These main classes of antimetabolites are used in the treatment of critical diseases including cancer, malignancies, autoimmune diseases, and many other non-malignant diseases. Antineoplastic drugs such as alkylating agents which have significant effects are described. Novel synthetic strategies for many anticancer alkylating agents including nitrogen mustards, chlorambucil, melphalan, ifosamide, oxaliplatin and temozolomide are explored. Natural products have offered some of the most significant drugs for treating cancer, as many drugs currently in clinical use are derived from natural products as camptothecins, vinca alkaloids, and derivatives of podophyllotoxin. They provide a contribution that is essential for modern drug discovery and development. In this book, insights into a broad array of novel compounds are reviewed, well-recognized synthetic approaches are emphasized for further anticancer drug development and discovery, and the biological evaluation of novel synthesized compounds are included. This comprehensive reference is a valuable resource for medical chemists working in drug discovery and development, as well as pharmacologists and biochemists working in related fields. - Provides the only resource dedicated to synthetic strategies of antimetabolites - Features synthetic strategies for nucleosides and their analogues - Includes coverage of purine-, pyrimidine- and antifolate-based anticancer drugs - The most significant anticancer alkylating agents and natural products are demonstrated
