Shortlisted for the 2016 Roderick Haig-Brown Regional Prize. Tod Inlet has been a place of refuge for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, but few are aware of its history. This tiny fjord, less than a half hour from downtown Victoria, is part of Gowlland Tod Provincial Park and is accessed by a forested path beside Tod Creek. For centuries it was the home of the WSÁNEć (Saanich) people, providing everything for their spiritual and material sustenance. In the early part of the twentieth century a small company town grew on its shores. Houses, a railway, a clay mill, a factory and a dock for steamships were built for the Vancouver Portland Cement Company. When the cement company had exhausted the limestone quarries, Jennie Butchart began her ambitious gardening project, Butchart Gardens. Developers made plans for marinas, golf courses and hotels to be built on this quiet inlet, but local citizens, environmentalists, scientists and First Nations people fought back. Almost all the buildings have been demolished, but concrete and iron are not easily disposed of, and reminders of the past confront the walker everywhere: shell middens spill into the sea, fruit trees and garden flowers mingle with indigenous plants, and century-old industrial relics litter the creek, the forest and the Inlet. But despite the ravages of the past century, Tod Inlet retains a spirit of peace and renewal. In other environments this clash of the man-made with the natural can create an unsettling mix. Here, time has allowed nature to begin the healing process and has morphed into a present that speaks softly of its past. Gwen Curry takes us on her walks down to the Inlet. Her beautiful photographs capture the spirit of present-day Tod Inlet, while her sensitive prose gives us glimpses into the Inlet's natural, industrial and First Nations history.

The non-judicial confinement of women is a common event in medieval European literature and hagiography. The literary image of the imprisoned woman, usually a noblewoman, has carried through into the quasi-medieval world of the fairy and folk tale, in which the 'maiden in the tower' is one of the archetypes. Yet the confinement of women outside of the judicial system was not simply a fiction in the medieval period. Men too were imprisoned without trial and sometimes on mere suspicion of an offence, yet evidence suggests that there were important differences in the circumstances under which men and women were incarcerated, and in their roles in relation to non-judicial captivity. This study of the confinement of women highlights the disparity in regulation concerning male and female imprisonment in the middle ages, and gives a useful perspective on the nature of medieval law, its scope and limitations, and its interaction with royal power and prerogative. Looking at England from 1170 to 1509, the book discusses: the situations in which women might be imprisoned without formal accusation of trial; how social status, national allegiance and stage of life affected the chances of imprisonment; the relevant legal rules and norms; the extent to which legal and constitutional developments in medieval England affected women's amenability to confinement; what can be known of the experiences of women so incarcerated; and how women were involved in situations of non-judicial imprisonment, aside from themselves being prisoners.

After reading Creature Comforts for Horses, it is my hope you will begin to understand even more about what makes that big heart tick. This was to be a mini-cook book of nutritious healthy horse treats. I soon realized treats were not the reason I was the proud owner of fatty patties and hunky chunkies. My journey to know my horses began. In spite of a medical/science background, I knew nothing about the physiology and anatomy of the horse nor its nutritional needs. I knew even less about the feed I was feeding and had no comprehension they too are products of what they eat. Sometimes an indifferent, inattentive and unwilling horse is not a diffi cult horse but a horse that doesnt have a wellness sense of balance. A horse that does not feel well will not perform well. In my quest to know my horse from the inside out I scoured libraries, bookstores and the internet and consulted with experienced horse people. Because I could not find one book that spoke to what I needed to know, I decided to create one. Cutting the fat, trimming the excess and addressing only the essential information required to ensure optimal wellness for my horses, all in an easy to understand language, defines Creature Comforts for Horses. I am thrilled to share this information with you.
