Gustav Adolf Graf von Götzen (1866-1910) war ein deutscher Ostafrikaforscher und Gouverneur von Deutsch-Ostafrika. Abenteuersinn und Forschungsdrang ließen ihn in den Jahren 1893-94 eine private Reise in Begleitung von Georg von Prittwitz und von Hermann Kersting mit 600 Trägern quer durch Zentralafrika unternehmen. Diese führte von Pangani am Indischen Ozean bis Matadi an der Kongomündung. Während der Reise gelang es Götzen den bisher nur in Berichten erwähnten Kiwusee im nördlichen Tanganyikagrabengebiet zu befahren und die heute noch teils tätigen Vulkane am Nordende dieses Sees zu entdecken. Goetzen durchquerte auch als erster das sagenumwobene Reich Ruanda. Die Ergebnisse dieser Reise sind im vorliegenden Band niedergelegt.
