Cai Guo-Qiang accompanies the most comprehensive exhibition to date of the innovative body of work of Chinese-born artist Cai Guo-Qiang. The catalogue presents a chronological and thematic survey that charts the artists creation of a distinctive visual and conceptual language across four mediums: gunpowder drawings made from gunpowder fuses and explosive powders laid on paper and ignited; explosion events, documented by videos, photographs and preparatory drawings; large-scale installations; and social projects, wherein the artist works with local communities to create an art event or exhibition site, documented by photographs. Featuring works from the 1980s to the present, the publication illuminates Cais significant formal and conceptual contributions to contemporary international art practices and social activism. The fully illustrated catalogue features essays by Alexandra Munroe, David Joselit, Miwon Kwon andWang Hui, along with some sixty documented plate entries.

Throughout his career, Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang (born 1957) has used the motif of the boat to represent the exchange of knowledge across cultures. In his latest monograph, A Clan of Boats, Guo-Qiang gathers his use of the motif into a single compilation and speaks for the first time about the many works he has created with boats throughout the course of his artistic career. "I am actually a vessel myself," he writes in this volume; "I left home a long time ago, the centuries-old harbor city of Quanzhou. I sailed to Shanghai first, and then to Tokyo, New York, and the rest of the world, further and further, shuttling between different ports, different natural sceneries, cultures, and histories." The book includes an essay written by art critic Karen Smith and two interviews (conducted ten years apart) by Hans Ulrich Obrist.
In this book, the self-healing of composite structures with shape memory polymer as either matrix or embedded suture is systematically discussed. Self-healing has been well known in biological systems for many years: a typical example is the self-healing of human skin. Whilst a minor wound can be self-closed by blood clotting, a deep and wide cut needs external help by suturing. Inspired by this observation, this book proposes a two-step close-then-heal (CTH) scheme for healing wide-opened cracks in composite structures–by constrained shape recovery first, followed by molecular healing. It is demonstrated that the CTH scheme can heal wide-opened structural cracks repeatedly, efficiently, timely, and molecularly. It is believed that self-healing represents the next-generation technology and will become an engineering reality in the near future. The book consists of both fundamental background and practical skills for implementing the CTH scheme, with additional focus on understanding strain memory versus stress memory and healing efficiency evaluation under various fracture modes. Potential applications to civil engineering structures, including sealant for bridge decks and concrete pavements, and rutting resistant asphalt pavements, are also explored. This book will help readers to understand this emerging field, and to establish a framework for new innovation in this direction. Cai Guo Qiang: 'Dragon or Rainbow Serpent: A Myth Glorified or Feared' profiles the 'gunpowder' work of this leading Chinese artist. Using the Brisbane River as the inspiration (and physical location) for his explosive and mythical work, Cai Guo Qiang ignited Dragon or Rainbow Serpent at the Gallery in 1996, the result of which is now held in the Collection. It features an essay by Suhanya Raffel, Head of Asian, Pacific and International Art, and a brief biography.
A revealing exploration of political disruption and violence in a rural Chinese county during the Cultural Revolution A Decade of Upheaval chronicles the surprising and dramatic political conflicts of a rural Chinese county over the course of the Cultural Revolution. Drawing on an unprecedented range of sources—including work diaries, interviews, internal party documents, and military directives—Dong Guoqiang and Andrew Walder uncover a previously unimagined level of strife in the countryside that began with the Red Guard Movement in 1966 and continued unabated until the death of Mao Zedong in 1976. Showing how the upheavals of the Cultural Revolution were not limited to urban areas, but reached far into isolated rural regions, Dong and Walder reveal that the intervention of military forces in 1967 encouraged factional divisions in Feng County because different branches of China’s armed forces took various sides in local disputes. The authors also lay bare how the fortunes of local political groups were closely tethered to unpredictable shifts in the decisions of government authorities in Beijing. Eventually, a backlash against suppression and victimization grew in the early 1970s and resulted in active protests, which presaged the settling of scores against radical Maoism. By studying the formation mechanism of the micro/nanostructures, the author identifies various artificial structural colors, three-dimensional micro/nanocage arrays, and fish-scale inspired microcone arrays in different processing environments. Multiple functions such as enhanced antireflection, hydrophobicity, and underwater superoleophobicity are achieved by precisely adjusting laser-machining parameters.
