Drawing on modernisation theory, this book charts the history and development of China’s rural education while examining the changes in rural teacher training and recruitment since the beginning of the twentieth century. Highlighting the changes in the composition of the body of rural teachers after modern schools were established in rural areas in China, the author outlines and discusses several historical phases that figure in the transformation of the teaching profession, including traditional private homeschooling teachers (sishu teachers), the earliest group of teachers of new-style schools, non-government teachers, teachers trained in normal schools and substitute teachers. Based on field studies in a county in northern China, the book analyses various contributing factors in rural teacher resourcing, ranging from China’s modernisation and urbanisation, the county’s social and economic development, management systems of rural schools and teachers, and teacher training and recruiting mechanisms. It also introduces the temporary solutions and long-term plans that have been adopted and implemented in different historical periods to regenerate the rural teaching force. The 5G technology has been commercialized worldwide and is expected to provide superior performance with enhanced mobile broadband, ultra-low latency transmission, and massive IoT connections. Meanwhile, the edge computing paradigm gets popular to provide distributed computing and storage resources in proximity to the users. As edge services and applications prosper, 5G and edge computing will be tightly coupled and continuously promote each other forward. Embracing this trend, however, mobile users, infrastructure providers, and service providers are all faced with the energy dilemma. On the user side, battery-powered mobile devices are much constrained by battery life, whereas mobile platforms and apps nowadays are usually power-hungry. At the infrastructure and service provider side, the energy cost of edge facilities accounts for a large proportion of operating expenses and has become a huge burden. This book provides a collection of most recent attempts to tackle the energy issues in mobile edge computing from new and promising perspectives. For example, the book investigates the pervasive low-battery anxiety among modern mobile users and quantifies the anxiety degree and likely behavior concerning the battery status. Based on the quantified model, a low-power video streaming solution is developed accordingly to save mobile devices' energy and alleviate users' low-battery anxiety. The subject of this brief is the application of linear parameter-varying (LPV) control to a class of dynamic systems to provide a systematic synthesis of gain-scheduling controllers with guaranteed stability and performance. An important step in LPV control design, which is not well covered in the present literature, is the selection of weighting functions. The proper selection of weighting functions tunes the controller to obtain the desired closed-loop response. The selection of appropriate weighting functions is difficult and sometimes appears arbitrary. In this brief, gain-scheduling control with engineering applications is covered in detail, including the LPV modeling, the control problem formulation, and the weighting function optimization. In addition, an iterative algorithm for obtaining optimal output weighting functions with respect to the H2 norm bound is presented in this brief. Using this algorithm, the selection of appropriate weighting functions becomes an automatic process. The LPV design and control synthesis procedures in this brief are illustrated using: • air-to-fuel ratio control for port-fuel-injection engines; • variable valve timing control; and • application to a vibration control problem. After reading this brief, the reader will be able to apply its concepts to design gain-scheduling controllers for their own engineering applications. This brief provides detailed step-by-step LPV modeling and control design strategies along with an automatic weight-selection algorithm so that engineers can apply state-of-the-art LPV control synthesis to solve their own engineering problems. This book establishes a measurement index to quantify China’s mass media public credibility, based on extensive research and the encapsulation of measurement theories and approaches related to media public credibility, as well as numerous empirical case studies from the international academic community over the past hundred years. The investigation into the current state of Chinese mass media public credibility and discussion on practical approaches to enhancing such public credibility is highly significant in the context of research on media public credibility. The book focuses on two fundamental issues: i) investigating the basic factors the Chinese audience values as the yardstick for media credibility, and ii) formulating a media public credibility measurement scale.
