Chinese media in the reform era walk a fine line between commercialized diversification and party-state control. Nowhere have these two trends been in more open conflict than at Southern Weekly (Nanfang Zhoumo), a Guangzhou-based newspaper known for reliably pushing the envelope on media controls. Soon after a new group of political leaders rose to power in early 2013, these tensions boiled over, with censors making draconian cuts to the paper’s New Year’s edition. Fiery debates raged inside the paper about how to push back against ever-tightening constraints on reporting, while daring public protests outside the paper’s headquarters demanded freedom of speech. As the protests came to an end, the party-state’s hold on media had only tightened. Silencing Chinese Media, a gripping insider’s account of these events, highlights the tensions inherent within the program of “reform and opening” and foreshadows the challenges facing Chinese media and civil society in this new era.

The business elite crossed over to the abject poverty of ancient times and piled up in heaps. Zhao Ke-cheng sneered: "Do you think that all my years of work are for nothing?" Jealous of her mother's wages, seeing her mouth move, the top quality grandma and the vicious Second Aunt came to beg for the branch family! As he watched, his family became rich and well-off, and some people wanted to share a piece of the cake. Zhao Kechan had played a trick on them to make them give up! Second Aunt: Hey, who's that pretty little bro called Wan Su? God! Zhao Ke-cheng's man! Okay, but Cheng didn't bother to explain and just used him to gag some people. However, it seemed like following him was pretty good. An endless amount of silver and an endless amount of treasures ... But orange encounter weak kind sincere, meet the adversary black wit; Wansu seems iceberg, but in fact is hot as fire. This book sheds light on state-of-the-art theories for more challenging outfit compatibility modeling scenarios. In particular, this book presents several cutting-edge graph learning techniques that can be used for outfit compatibility modeling. Due to its remarkable economic value, fashion compatibility modeling has gained increasing research attention in recent years. Although great efforts have been dedicated to this research area, previous studies mainly focused on fashion compatibility modeling for outfits that only involved two items and overlooked the fact that each outfit may be composed of a variable number of items. This book develops a series of graph-learning based outfit compatibility modeling schemes, all of which have been proven to be effective over several public real-world datasets. This systematic approach benefits readers by introducing the techniques for compatibility modeling of outfits that involve a variable number of composing items. To deal with the challenging task of outfit compatibility modeling, this book provides comprehensive solutions, including correlation-oriented graph learning, modality-oriented graph learning, unsupervised disentangled graph learning, partially supervised disentangled graph learning, and metapath-guided heterogeneous graph learning. Moreover, this book sheds light on research frontiers that can inspire future research directions for scientists and researchers.

The field of signal transduction research is one of the fastest growing in all of biomedical research in recent years. Signaling through cell adhesion molecules have long been of interest because of their importance in embryonic development, homeostasis, immune responses, wound healing , and malignant transformation. However, it is only recently re
According to the final declaration of the 1954 Geneva Conference regarding Vietnam, general elections were to be held in July 1956 that would lead to the reunification of North and South Vietnam. The Geneva Agreement, however, was doomed from the start, as the South Vietnamese leaders did not suscribe to it and the leaders of the Communist North saw its value as primarily a propaganda tool. By 1956 it was obvious to all that reunification in accordance with the agreement was impossible, and the North Vietnamese looked to China for advice and assistance. Based on Vietnamese, Chinese, American and British sources--many only recently made available--this work examines Sino-Vietnamese relations in the early stages of the second Indochina conflict. The progression of the Vietnamese Communists' goals from primarily political to essentially military is traced. The book shows that the Hanoi government was remarkably in control of its own decision-making.
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are emerging as a promising solution to help us explore and understand the ocean. The global market for AUVs is predicted to grow from 638 million dollars in 2020 to 1,638 million dollars by 2025 – a compound annual growth rate of 20.8 percent. To make AUVs suitable for a wider range of application-specific missions, it is necessary to deploy multiple AUVs to cooperatively perform the localization, tracking and formation tasks. However, weak underwater acoustic communication and the model uncertainty of AUVs make achieving this challenging. This book presents cutting-edge results regarding localization, tracking and formation for AUVs, highlighting the latest research on commonly encountered AUV systems. It also showcases several joint localization and tracking solutions for AUVs. Lastly, it discusses future research directions and provides guidance on the design of future localization, tracking and formation schemes for AUVs. Representing a substantial contribution to nonlinear system theory, robotic control theory, and underwater acoustic communication system, this book will appeal to university researchers, scientists, engineers, and graduate students in control theory and control engineering who wish to learn about the core principles, methods, algorithms, and applications of AUVs. Moreover, the practical localization, tracking and formation schemes presented provide guidance on exploring the ocean. The book is intended for those with an understanding of nonlinear system theory, robotic control theory, and underwater acoustic communication systems.

This book systemically presents key concepts of multi-modal hashing technology, recent advances on large-scale efficient multimedia search and recommendation, and recent achievements in multimedia indexing technology. With the explosive growth of multimedia contents, multimedia retrieval is currently facing unprecedented challenges in both storage cost and retrieval speed. The multi-modal hashing technique can project high-dimensional data into compact binary hash codes. With it, the most time-consuming semantic similarity computation during the multimedia retrieval process can be significantly accelerated with fast Hamming distance computation, and meanwhile the storage cost can be reduced greatly by the binary embedding. The authors introduce the categorization of existing multi-modal hashing methods according to various metrics and datasets. The authors also collect recent multi-modal hashing techniques and describe the motivation, objective formulations, and optimization steps for context-aware hashing methods based on the tag-semantics transfer.
Denationalizing Identities explores the relationship between performance and ideology in the global Sinosphere. Wah Guan Lim's study of four important diasporic director-playwrights—Gao Xingjian, Stan Lai Sheng-chuan, Danny Yung Ning Tsun, and Kuo Pao Kun—shows the impact of theater on ideas of "Chineseness" across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. At the height of the Cold War, the "Bamboo Curtain" divided the "two Chinas" across the Taiwan Strait. Meanwhile, Hong Kong prepared for its handover to the People's Republic of China and Singapore rethought Chinese education. As geopolitical tensions imposed ethno-nationalist identities across the region, these four dramatists wove together local, foreign, and Chinese elements in their art, challenging mainland China's narrative of an inevitable communist outcome. By performing cultural identities alternative to the ones sanctioned by their own states, they debunked notions of a unified Chineseness. Denationalizing Identities highlights the key role theater and performance played in circulating people and ideas across the Chinese-speaking world, well before cross-strait relations began to thaw.
Named for the famous Chinese minister of state, Guan Zhong (d. 645 B.C.), the Guanzi is one of the largest collections of ancient Chinese writings still in existence. With this volume, W. Allyn Rickett completes the first full translation of the Guanzi into English. This represents a truly monumental effort, as the Guanzi is a long and notoriously difficult work. It was compiled in its present form about 26 B.C. by the Han dynasty scholar Liu Xiang and the surviving text consists of some seventy-six anonymous essays dating from the fifth century B.C. to the first century B.C. The forty-two chapters contained in this volume include several which present Daoist theories concerning self-cultivation and the relationship between the body and mind as well as the development of Huang-Lao political and economic thought. The "Dizi zhi" chapter provides one of the oldest discussions of education in China. The "Shui di" chapter refers to the circulation of blood some two thousand years before the discoveries of William Harvey in the West. Other chapters deal with various aspects of statecraft, Yin-Yang and Five Phases thought, folk beliefs, seasonal calendars, and farming. Perhaps the best-known chapters are those that deal with various methods of controlling and stimulating the economy. They constitute one of the world's earliest presentations of a quantity theory of money. Throughout the text, Rickett provides extensive notes. He also supplies an introduction to the volume and a comprehensive index.
