How should the Catholic church remember the sins of its saints? This question proves particularly urgent in the case of those saints who were canonized due to their relation to black slavery. Today, many of their racial virtues seem like racial vices. In this way, the church celebrates Peter Claver, a seventeenth-century Spanish missionary to Colombia, as “the saint of the slave trade,” and extols Martín de Porres as the patron saint of mixed race people. But in truth, their sainthoods have upheld anti-blackness much more than they have undermined it. Habituated by anti-blackness, the church has struggled to perceive racial holiness accurately. In the ongoing cause to canonize Pierre Toussaint, a Haitian-born former slave, the church continues to enact these bad racial habits. This book proposes black fugitivity, as both a historical practice and an interpretive principle, to be a strategy by which the church can build new hagiographical habits. Rather than searching inside itself for racial heroes, the church should learn to celebrate those black fugitives who sought refuge outside of it.

In the last fifteen years, Japan's economy has gone from model of success to object lesson in failure. William W. Grimes offers a richly detailed, insider's view of the key macroeconomic policies and events in contemporary Japan, as well as a close examination of the causes and effects of these upheavals. It is difficult to believe that the "Bubble Economy" of the late 1980s and the failed attempts at economic stimulation in the following decade both arose from the same policies. In Unmaking the Japanese Miracle, Grimes shows that this is precisely what happened. Focusing less on what went wrong than on why it went wrong, Grimes finds that mistaken macroeconomic policies—loose money in the late 1980s, excessively tight money until 1992, and only grudging use of expansionary fiscal policy until 1998—largely caused Japan's economic problems. Based on scores of interviews with Japanese policymakers, his is the first political explanation of why these catastrophic policies were carried out by the Ministry of Finance, the Bank of Japan, and the Diet. Various economic shocks were met, Grimes says, with a consistent and often inappropriate pattern of responses. This pattern has fundamentally altered because of changes within the three policymaking institutions since 1998.

In 1992, A "no-shot" candidate runs for president in the New Hampshire Democratic Primary, while telling the story of how the United States evolved from 13 small, scattered, quarreling British colonies along the Atlantic Coast into the most powerful nation in history. With a definite, clear and unique message, the candidate and his handful of helpers, who include a recovering alcoholic who once worked for Jimmy Carter's campaign; a young waitress, who was a star basketball player in high school, but fell into a deep depression caused by an episode in her senior year; a retired New Hampshire newspaper publisher; plus some former employees from his years as a newspaper publisher, he manages to win the most votes on Primary night. He goes from New Hampshire, to win the Maine caucus, the Georgia Primary and following an assassination attempt which kills one of his associates, he wins Florida and comes close in New York, making him the leading candidate for the Democratic nomination. The candidate stresses that the strong U.S. central government is still the best one ever conceived and that it is "the answer, not the problem," and has been the essential factor in the nation's three great transformative crises: the American Revolution in which the colonies declared independence from England; The Civil War, which established that the states were indeed one nation, not just a collection of "un-united" states; and thirdly the New Deal, which rescued the U.S. from economic depression, prepared it to be the decisive power in winning World War II, and laid the foundation for the modern U.S. and, to a great extent, the modern world. The threat of a third-party effort by Ross Perot throwing the election to the House of Representative, persuades him to withdraw and support the better financed and organized Bill Clinton for the November election. This history is delivered in a dramatic fictional saga written in a newspaper style, which makes it easy to digest for the average reader. Its characters are well-defined, and its narrative plausible in the final analysis. It is anti-war, pro-democracy and advocates political campaigns without a lot of consultants and image-makers.
