Authority, Ascendancy, and Supremacy examines the American, Chinese, and Russian (Big 3) competition for power and influence in the Post-Cold War Era. With the ascension of regional powers such as India, Iran, Brazil, and Turkey, the Big 3 dynamic is an evolving one, which cannot be ignored because of its effect to not only reshape regional security, but also control influence and power in world affairs. How does one define a "global" or "regional" power in the Post-Cold War Era? How does the relationships among the Big 3 influence regional actors? Gregory O. Hall utilizes country data from primary and secondary sources to reveal that since the early 1990s, competition for influence and power among the Big 3 has intensified and could result in armed confrontation among the major powers. He assesses the state of affairs in each country’s economic, resource, military, social/demographic, and political spheres. In addition, events data, which focuses on international interactions, facilitates identifying trends in Big 3 interactions as well as their concerns and affairs with regional players. Opinion data, drawn from policy makers, scholarly interviews, and survey research data, identifies foreign policy interests among the Big 3, as well non-Big 3 foreign policy behaviors. With its singular focus on American, Chinese, and Russian interactions, policy interests, and behaviors, Authority, Ascendancy, and Supremacy represents a significant contribution for understanding and managing Post-Cold War conflicts and promises to be an important book.
As a result of his research for this WWII novel, Gregory Hall travelled to the Philippines with a History Channel film crew, as well as with four of the surviving WWII participants. During the documentary filming, he visited the sites of the two internment camps, Los Banos and Santo Tomas. Additionally, he visited the locations of the beachhead where the amphibious tracked vehicles (AMTRAC’s) came ashore, the airfield used by the paratroopers who parachuted into the action, as well as the vacated prison where the liberated prisoners were taken. The author spent numerous years researching the liberation and has personally met many of the participants. Over the years, he has attended six reunions of the former paratroopers and internees. This novel weaves the experiences and stories shared by many of the participants. Gregory Hall’s father served as a paratrooper in the US Army’s 11th Airborne Division during the rescue. “ Like Father, Like Son” , the author enlisted in the US Army and became a paratrooper, albeit a second generation paratrooper during the Vietnam-era. He served with the US Army’s 82nd Airborne Division during the mid-1970’s, attaining the rank of Sergeant (E-5) in the Airborne Infantry. The novel has been a work of passion for Gregory Hall. The desire to write this novel dates back to when the author was stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. His father, like many WWII veterans, rarely talked about the war. The author took advantage of being in an airborne division and began researching his father’s unit. It became evident to him that the heroic exploits of US paratroopers in the Pacific Theater of Operations were overshadowed by their “brother” paratroopers in the European Theater of Operations. Similarly, the successful rescue of over 2,000 prisoners from 30 miles behind enemy lines in the Philippines, was overshadowed by another historical event that occurred on the very same day, February 23, 1945. That event was the raising of the American flag by US Marines on Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. The author is retired after a 24 year career as an FBI Special Agent. He has appeared as a military historian on the History Channel’s two hour documentary, RESCUE AT DAWN; THE LOS BANOS RAID. Examining US-China-Russia Foreign Relations explores the changing nature and function of the US–China–Russia strategic triangle from the end of the Cold War up to the present. Gregory Hall uses neoclassical realist international relations (IR) theory to argue that, since the mid-2000s, the politics of the strategic triangle have been increasingly influenced by factors related to the Big3 countries’ respective domestic environments. Hall utilizes agency and context for each of the three great powers, expanding on previously established frameworks to include a comparative analysis of each actor’s domestic environment for foreign policy and the interplay between the domestic and external contexts. In IR terms, the book identifies and illustrates how factors including systemic, state and societal, individuals, and small groups influence the foreign relations of the Big3. Hall concludes by exploring the future prospects for great power relations and for global affairs. Incorporating both theoretical and empirical data to offer a fresh and timely look at the myriad challenges facing the three powers, this book provides an excellent companion to students of foreign policy, international security, and post-Cold War international politics.
