Traces the two-and-a-half year investigation by the New Jersey State Police of the Lindbergh kidnapping case, challenging the effectiveness of the investigation and the evidence that convicted Bruno Hauptmann.
When Tampa area journalist Jason Bauman is tasked to write an article about a Florida legislative hearing regarding the placement of Civil War memorials, as well as the battle whose proposed monument triggered the bill, he figures it'll be his last easy fluff piece before he heads North to his new job as a political reporter. His one regret is leaving behind the woman he loves, who because of her family obligations can't move with him. But what he discovers in the small North Florida town of Olustee will force him to re-examine not only his perception of America's bloodiest conflict and its enduring cultural rift, but also his own life choices.
This book is the first text to provide a comprehensive assessment of the application of fundamental principles of dissolution and drug release testing to poorly soluble compounds and formulations. Such drug products are, vis-à-vis their physical and chemical properties, inherently incompatible with aqueous dissolution. However, dissolution methods are required for product development and selection, as well as for the fulfillment of regulatory obligations with respect to biopharmaceutical assessment and product quality understanding. The percentage of poorly soluble drugs, defined in classes 2 and 4 of the Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS), has significantly increased in the modern pharmaceutical development pipeline. This book provides a thorough exposition of general method development strategies for such drugs, including instrumentation and media selection, the use of compendial and non-compendial techniques in product development, and phase-appropriate approaches to dissolution development. Emerging topics in the field of dissolution are also discussed, including biorelevant and biphasic dissolution, the use on enzymes in dissolution testing, dissolution of suspensions, and drug release of non-oral products. Of particular interest to the industrial pharmaceutical professional, a brief overview of the formulation and solubilization techniques employed in the development of BCS class 2 and 4 drugs to overcome solubility challenges is provided and is complemented by a collection of chapters that survey the approaches and considerations in developing dissolution methodologies for enabling drug delivery technologies, including nanosuspensions, lipid-based formulations, and stabilized amorphous drug formulations.
ALL CHRISTIANS are called to be disciples, yet there are many paths of discipleship. Having models of discipleship is essential to discovering our own unique paths as followers of Christ. Profiles in Discipleship explores twelve "images" or types of Christian discipleship that have guided the thought and action of two dozen influential figures in the Christian tradition. Combining history, theology, and spirituality, the book draws upon the richness of the Christian tradition to shed light on the crucial question of how to live a life of faithful Christian discipleship in today's world. The author presents profiles of twenty-four exemplars of Christian discipleship from the early church to the present day, including Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox Christians. Among the remarkable men and women whose fives of discipleship are profiled in this book are soldiers and peacemakers, servants and liberators, and artists and protest poets. In studying the lives of these Christians who persevered in discipleship despite their many faults, readers will be inspired to look into their own souls and cultivate the seeds of discipleship there. Landscapes viewed from afar have a timeless quality that is soothing to the human spirit. Yet a tranquil wilderness scene is but a snapshot in the steady stream of surficial change. Wind, water and human activities reshape the landscape by means of gradual to catastrophic and usually irreversible events. Much of this change destroys past landscapes, but at some times and places, landscapes are buried in the rock record. This work is dedicated to the discovery of past landscapes and their life through the fossil record of soils. A long history of surficial changes extending back almost to the origin of our planet can be deciphered from the study of these buried soils, or paleosols. Some rudiments of this history, and our place in it, are outlined in a final section of this book. But first it is necessary to learn something of the language of soils, of what happens to them when buried in the rock record and which of the forces of nature can be confidently reconstructed from their remains. Much of this preliminary material is borrowed from soil science, but throughout emphasis is laid on features that provide most reliable evidence of landscapes during the distant geological past. This book has evolved primarily as a text for senior level university courses in paleopedology: the study of fossil soils.
This engaging study traces the development of closed captioning—a field that emerged in the 1970s and 1980s from decades-long developments in cinematic subtitling, courtroom stenography, and education for the deaf. Gregory J. Downey discusses how digital computers, coupled with human mental and physical skills, made live television captioning possible. Downey's survey includess the hidden information workers who mediate between live audiovisual action and the production of visual track and written records. His work examines communication technology, human geography, and the place of labor in a technologically complex and spatially fragmented world. Illustrating the ways in which technological development grows out of government regulation, education innovation, professional profit-seeking, and social activism, this interdisciplinary study combines insights from several fields, among them the history of technology, human geography, mass communication, and information studies.

The Control of Fertility is concerned with the experimental control of fertility as a specific biological problem. It is, first of all, an attempt to summarize a collection of data hitherto either partially or not at all presented. Secondly, it attempts to indicate those avenues which hold promise for future investigation. Finally, it attempts an assessment of the implications of understandings and ignorances. The book opens with an account of the sequence of processes essential to successful sexual reproduction in mammals. This is followed by separate chapters on approaches to the inhibition of spermatogenesis, ovulation, fertilization, and free ovum development. Subsequent chapters deal with blastocyst development and implantation, biological activities of compounds affecting fertility, fertility control in men and women, the inhibition of ovulation, biological properties of ovulation inhibitors in human subjects, and effectiveness and acceptability of contraception.
It's important for people to know that I'm the president of everybody." --President George W. Bush, from Air Force One, January 14, 2005 Who Leland Gregory voted for in the 2004 presidential election is his business. But when George W. Bush won a second term, Gregory had to be doing cartwheels around his computer. The humorist, after all, makes a career of recording human behavior at, let's just say, its less-than-brilliant moments. Bush-Whacked does a thorough job of tracking the president's language mangling as well as the inept bungling of his administration: * "And so during these holiday seasons, we thank our blessings . . ." --GWB at Fort Belvoir, Va., December 21, 2004. * Through bureaucratic mismanagement, parts for a top-secret spy plane, originally intended for destruction, were discovered being auctioned off on eBay. --New York Post * "(T)he illiteracy level of our children are appalling." --GWB, Washington, D.C., January 23, 2004 With his expert nose for nuttiness, Gregory includes numerous perplexing quotes, wacky anecdotes, and weird one-liners in this hysterical collection. This isn't the president at his finest, just Dubya at his funniest.
Molecular Aspects of Placental and Fetal Membrane Autacoids critically reviews current paradigms and working models concerning the regulation and function of placental and fetal membrane autacoids. These topics include cytokines; growth factors, such as EGF, TGF, IGF, PDGF, and the products of the prolactin-growth hormone gene family; eicosanoids and eicosanoid-forming enzymes; relaxin, imhibin, PTHRP, LHRH, endothelin, steroid-synthesizing enzymes and steroid receptors; and acetylcholine. The book is an excellent contemporary reference for researchers and students in reproductive biology, endocrinology, perinatology, and obstetrics.
