Drawing on the philosophies of Deleuze and Derrida, as well as the work of Indo-European linguist Émile Benveniste, Lambert constructs a genealogy to demonstrate how political thought has been structured by the emergence of such “conceptual personae.” At the center of Philosophy after Friendship is the persona of the friend, together with the idea of friendship, on which the democratic ideals of consensus, fraternity, and equality are based. Lambert argues that the vitality of this conceptual persona, originated by the Greeks, has been exhausted by centuries of war. In fact, we might today be witnessing the overturning of an earlier philosophical idealism that saw friendship as the destination of the political and, in its place, the emergence of a nonphilosophical understanding that has set perpetual war as the ultimate ground from which future thinking of the political must depart. In his Conclusion, Lambert proposes a truly “postwar philosophy” that takes as its first principle the idea of perpetual peace, which would require nothing less than a complete reevaluation of the goals of any future political philosophy, if not the meaning of philosophy itself.

Barak draws upon his own experiences over this half-century as a window into the various debates and issues among radical, critical, and technocratic criminologies. In doing so, he revisits his own seminal works, showing how they reflect those periods of criminological development. What holds this book together is the story of how resisting the crimes of the powerful while struggling locally for social justice is the essence of critical criminology. His seven chapters are divided into three parts—academic freedom, academic activism, and academic praxis—and these connected stories link the author's own academic career in Berkeley, California; Las Vegas, Nevada; Chicago; Alabama; Ann Arbor, Michigan; and across the United States. Barak's eventful scholarly life involved efforts to overcome laws against abortion and homosexuality; to formalize protective practices for women from domestic violence and sexual assault; to oppose racism and classism in the criminal justice system; to challenge the wars on gangs, drugs, and immigrants; and to confront the policies of mass incarceration and the treatment of juvenile offenders.

The recent marches and conflicts are becoming more prevalent, with people being hurt and killed. The general reason given is that there are Nazis and KKK organizations that operate under a doctrine of hate, but why here and why now? No one has even attempted to explain why these events are becoming more common and why they are happening right now. Although it is easy to label protestors as Nazis and white supremacist, the fundamental questions have not been answered. The astounding part of the whole question is that there seems to be very little interest in actually looking for underlying reasons that motivate people to leave their comfortable, overstuffed chairs and march under a common banner. I attempt to answer the question about who these people are and explain the grievances of these novice protestors. During my investigation, I found that my conclusions were driving me toward the very uncomfortable position of white patriarchal nationalist. Through my journey, I hope to shine a light on the problems facing America today and to show why these protestors are not just a natural consequence of their environment but an expected result. In other words, given the position that America finds herself today, protests and conflicts are an expected outcome. More to the point, conflicts are expected to grow and become more widespread. I do not ask you to join me in my expedition, but by examining my trajectory of thought, hopefully you will understand the fundamental nature of what is happening to our society and perhaps be able to construct operational solutions that are so desperately needed.
