Jonathan Gray brings together textual theory, discussions of television and the public sphere, and ideas of parody and comedy. Including primary audience research, it focuses on how The Simpsons has been able to talk back to three of television’s key genres - the sitcom, adverts and the news - and on how it holds the potential to short-circuit these genre’s meanings, power, and effects by provoking reinterpretations and offering more media literate recontextualizations. This book looks at comics through the lens of Art History, examining the past influence of art-historical methodologies on comics scholarship to scope how they can be applied to Comics Studies in the present and future. It unearths how early comics scholars deployed art-historical approaches, including stylistic analysis, iconography, Cultural History and the social history of art, and proposes how such methodologies, updated in light of disciplinary developments within Art History, could be usefully adopted in the study of comics today. Through a series of indicative case studies of British and American comics like Eagle, The Mighty Thor, 2000AD, Escape and Heartbreak Hotel, it argues that art-historical methods better address overlooked aspects of visual and material form. Bringing Art History back into the interdisciplinary nexus of comics scholarship raises some fundamental questions about the categories, frameworks and values underlying contemporary Comics Studies.

This book explores Alan Moore’s career as a cartoonist, as shaped by his transdisciplinary practice as a poet, illustrator, musician and playwright as well as his involvement in the Northampton Arts Lab and the hippie counterculture in which it took place. It traces Moore’s trajectory out from the underground comix scene of the 1970s and into a commercial music press rocked by the arrival of punk. In doing so it uncovers how performance has shaped Moore’s approach to comics and their political potential. Drawing on the work of Bertolt Brecht, who similarly fused political dissent with experimental popular art, this book considers what looking strangely at Alan Moore as cartoonist tells us about comics, their visual and material form, and the performance and politics of their reading and making.
Born in London in 1879 and raised in the Cape of Good Hope, Beatrice Hastings was one of those talented marginal figures who are major witnesses to their times, but whose testimony has been sadly neglected. After an early marriage and almost immediate widowhood, she had a false start as a showgirl in New York before taking London by storm as the literary editor of, and leading contributor to, the progressive The New Age. With HG Wells, Bernard Shaw, GK Chesterton and Arnold Bennett she kept up well publicised differences of opinion. She also launched the careers of Ezra Pound and Katherine Mansfield. During the First World War she became the journal's Paris correspondent, gaining acclaim for her unique weekly insider reports. In her French years she lived with Amedeo Modigliani, who painted several famous portraits of her, setting a style in looks for the modern woman. Her friends included Pablo Picasso, Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob, and with Jean Cocteau she shared the love of Raymond Radiguet, the boy genius less than half her age. She claimed that, by the age of forty, she had had forty male lovers, among them The New Age editor AR Orage and leading modernist Wyndham Lewis. Forthright and controversial Hastings made many enemies, but throughout her life she wrote prolifically and eloquently, leaving a fascinating record of the world she lived in. She died by her own hand in 1943. In this absorbing biography Stephen Gray traces her entire career, separating the legend of Beatrice Hastings - the notoriously free woman portrayed in several works - from the bare facts.

Who has not, in a favored moment, ‘stolen the limelight’, whether inadvertently or by design? The implications of such an act of display – its illicitness, its verve, its vertiginous reversal of power, its subversiveness – are explored in this book. Narrative crafting and management of such scenarios are studied across canonical novels by Gide, Colette, Mauriac, and Duras, as well as by African Francophone writer Oyono and detective novelist Japrisot. As manipulated within narrative, acts of display position a viewer or reader from whom response (from veneration or desire to repugnance or horror) is solicited; but this study demonstrates that display can also work subversively, destabilising and displacing such a privileged spectator. As strategies of displacement, these scenarios ultimately neutralise and even occult the very subject they so energetically appear to solicit. Powered by gendered tensions, this dynamic of display as displacement works toward purposes of struggle, resistance or repression.
