This book offers a critical realist intervention into the field of Marxist Sociology of Education. Critical realism, as developed by British philosopher Roy Bhaskar, is known for its capacity to serve as a conceptual underlabourer to applied fields like education. Indeed, its success in clarifying and resolving thorny issues of educational theory and practice is now well established. Given critical realism’s sympathetic Marxist origins, its productive and critical engagement with Marxism has an even longer history. To date there has been little sustained attention given to the application of critical realism to Marxist educational praxis. The book addresses this gap in existing scholarship. Its conceptual ground clearing of the field of Marxist Sociology of Education centres on two problematics well-known in the social sciences: naturalism and the structure-agency relation. Marxist theory from the days of Marx to the present is shown to also be haunted by these problematics. This has resulted in considerable tension around the meaning and nature of, for example, reform, revolution, class determinism and class struggle. With its emergence in the 1970s as a child of Western Marxism, the field continues to be an expression of these tensions that seriously limit its transformative potential. Addressing these issues and offering conceptual clarification in the interests of revolutionary educational practice, Critical Realism for Marxist Sociology of Education provides a new perspective on education which will be of interest to students, scholars and practitioners alike.
It has become fashionable to assume that concerted action to bring about social reform is a waste of time. If we are to move beyond the current laments about how nothing works anymore, we must view the reform process from the perspective of the community groups involved-those who make it work or fail-and understand how and why they behave as they do. "Social Construction of Reform "is an analysis of the activities of community groups who used Ford Foundation funding to prevent crime. The authors ask: What are the goals of the community groups who are involved in the reform? What are they trying to accomplish with their participation in the program? Are their goals synonymous with those who fund and evaluate the activity? The authors begin by analyzing the implementation of the grant by the groups involved. They describe the origins of the group's planned intervention, the nature of what is called community crime prevention, and then they examine the impact of external funding on community organizations as a generic issue. They take a careful look at what the groups did with the Foundation's support, to understand how well the groups' crime prevention strategy they employed supported their ideology. The block watch is examined in detail as the tactic most often employed. The authors conclude with observations on what success and failure mean in the context of the findings reported, offering a better understanding of reforms and new criteria to assess their effectiveness.
The Portland Tales is the first book of short stories written by Grant Keltner. Both fictitious and non-fictitious in nature, tales of life growing up in Oregon. Some of the stories are funny, some are sad; some are stories of love and faith, some are stories of miracles, stories of friends and family. W.A. Mackintosh (1895-1970) was an exemplary public intellectual and a modest person of rare abilities. Examining Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun as Counternarrative: Understanding the Black Family and Black Students shows how and why Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, should be used as a teaching tool to help educators develop a more accurate and authentic understanding of the Black Family.
