In this book, GrandPa Walking shares the specific gear and creative routes he and other younger seniors used in order to day hike and limit their overnight backpacking stays. He also provides directions and GPS coordinates for little-known access points. The author has hiked the entire AT over thirteen-seasons of which Maine’s AT was hiked during part of June and July for eight of those seasons. Even those not looking to hike the AT will enjoy this account of the author’s journey through rugged Maine’s AT.

George Washington's Smallest Army is a fanciful, feel good tale of three critters who live around Miller's Pond in Pennsylvania, and how they help George Washington at a critical time in the Revolutionary War. Before they help him, a wise owl teaches a young frog to speak other critter languages, and they later recruit a third critter--a white mouse-- to help them "civilize" the critters around the pond. They save the life of a large wolf, and later meet George Washington who has just been chased out of New Jersey by the Redcoats. At this point they create a clever plan that helps George build confidence to later cross the Delaware River and defeat the Redcoats at Trenton and Princeton. The story is consistent with historic accounts of the Revolutionary War, and one must wonder, did it really happen this way? It's possible, maybe.

What motivated the evolution from a personal BLOG to a series of childrens books? With every venture into the outdoors, we find some new wonder of nature, be it from the changing seasons or the change in environment. There is always something new to find, so I elected my BLOG to share the pleasures I have absorbed from my frequent wanderings. I have recently decided to evolve a portion of my writings into a childrens level series. Only because I believe that children need some additional prompting into the vocabulary of science and nature and their curiosity is the key to their success. With nominal help from teachers, mentors and especially parents, curiosity may have killed the cat, but it will certainly build the child. I felt that these discovered wonders should be shared with the children before the wonders pass them by.
